Henri Moussalli Prize Giving Event
On Friday 30th March, we held our annual Henri Moussalli prize giving event to
congratulate the 2011/12 winner of the Henri Moussalli Award.
Mrs Jennifer Moussalli, presented John Lewis vouchers to Dr Sheila Grecian, who had been
working as a Foundation Year 2 trainee, supervised by Dr Basil Issa, Consultant Endocrinologist.
The winning lecture was entitled “Surely Obesity & Diabetes; or is it?”
The presentation was then followed by the Henri Moussalli Lecture 2012. Dr Winston De Mello,
Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine gave a talk on “Pelvic Dynias and Neuralgias – A
personal selection”. This was a very thought provoking and interesting lecture; enjoyed by
representatives from a diverse range of specialties.
We are now in the process of organising the next cohort of trainees who will compete for the
2012/13 Henri Moussalli Award.
ACADEMY News
Welcome
Dear Colleagues
The enthusiasm for teaching
and learning amongst UHSM
colleagues never ceases to
amaze. This edition of Academy
News highlights some of
the exciting innovations and
developments that the Academy
is currently undertaking as
well as reminding us that we
already do a very good job
as a healthcare education
organisation. The challenge that
the Academy faces is to try to
instil a culture where all UHSM
colleagues come to work to
learn. This is the only way we
will be able to continually offer
the best possible service to our
patients.
Congratulations to the
Postgraduate Medicine team
who have been awarded a
large grant, following a highly
competitive bidding process,
under the ‘Better Training Better
Care’ fund of Medical Education
England to deliver specialist
training lists to trainee surgeons
and gynaecologists at UHSM.
Congratulations must also go
to those across several areas
of the Academy who, following
accreditation of the Academy
as an Apprenticeship Centre,
have secured the funding for
more than 150 apprenticeships
covering a range of disciplines
to be undertaken at UHSM.
This success was a very real
example of colleagues being
‘one talented team’ and will go a
long way to give UHSM the skills
it requires to deliver state-ofthe-art
care to our patients in
future years.
Ged Byrne
Director UHSM Academy
Practice Education Facilitators (PEFs)
The Practice Education Facilitators are involved with several initiatives
contributing towards the provision of high quality learning environments
for all students.
Modernising Scientific Careers
The PEF team are continuing towards developing robust links with AHP
colleagues. For example, in relation to Modernising Scientific Careers the
PEF Team are working to assist in supporting both the Specialist Training
Programmes (SPT) and the Practitioner Training Programmes (PTP). A
pathway of experiences has already been developed for audiology students
to access rotational placements using an inter-professional approach. For
example, audiologists will gain experience in year-1 working alongside
neurophysiologist, visual scientists, pathologists, radiologists and neonatal
nurses. Additionally PEFs have also been instrumental in developing short
exposure experience for PTP specialising in cardiology, facilitating the
students to gain a more holistic view of care delivery. Students can access
placements in the Vascular Studies Department and the Cardiothoracic
Catheter Lab.
Inter Professional Learning (IPL)
In March 2012 students from seven different Health Care professions
attended an inter-professional study day based on ‘the patient’s journey
with a diagnosis of Dementia’. This was the second event developed and
facilitated by UHSM PEFs alongside colleagues from Central Manchester
Foundation Trust (CMFT), Manchester Mental Health Services Community
Trust (MMHSCT) and the Christie Hospital. This event was well evaluated
and future plans aimed at ways to build on and embed IPL in practice are
to be developed.
Further IPL has taking place in April jointly facilitated by a PEF and a
member of the undergraduate department. The theme was practising
manual blood pressure techniques and was attended by year-3 student
nurses and year-1 medical students learning together. This followed from
a previous successful session held in February where medical students
and physiotherapy students explored together the care of patients with
respiratory disease.
Our colleagues in clinical practice are invited to contact the PEF team with
any ideas they would like to share around IPL opportunities.
Nursing
Nursing is a major focus for the PEF Team and presently are actively
involved in supporting quality initiatives to enable nursing mentors to
achieve and maintain the NMC Standards for Supporting Learning and
Assessment in Practice. The PEFs are strengthening communication links
with senior nurses and developing robust reporting systems with links to
educational governance.
Future Event
The PEF team are planning to contribute to this years Nursing and
Midwifery Celebration Event with the theme ‘Patient Care at our Heart:
Delivering Excellence Through Informed Care. The PEFs aim to run a stand
with information on Clinical Teaching and assessing over the last 50 years.
Primary Care
The Academy continues to offer a diverse menu of meetings to our colleagues in Primary Care.
In March, in conjunction with South PCT, we held a very
successful COPD meeting. This event attracted both General
Practitioners and Practice Nurses from all over the region.
In April, we invited Dr Martin Vernon and colleagues to
showcase the diverse service portfolio of the Complex
Health & Social Care Directorate, and again filled Lecture
Theatre 2 with colleagues from the community and General
Practitioners in the area.
The following afternoon, the Academy supported a
“Diagnosis and Initial Management of DVT/PE” event for
Primary and Secondary Care Colleagues organised by
Professor Charles McCollum. This was a hugely successful
afternoon producing excellent feedback for our speakers.
In June, the Academy has been asked by Dr Rash Nawaz,
Consultant Paediatrician to support and host the National
launch of the GMC’s Learning Disabilities Website.
The Academy is delighted to have been invited to support
this hugely prestigious event. Local GPs are already
expressing their interest, and signing up for what we hope
will be an innovative and exciting educational event.
Postgraduate Department
Better Training, Better Care Pilot site
In February a bid was submitted to Medical Education
England (MEE) to become a pilot site for the Better Training
Better Care Programme which aims to improve the quality
of medical training and learning for the benefit of patient
care. The bid proposed the introduction of specific training
lists in theatre, led by trainees; where trainees oversee the
complete surgical patient pathway, including pre-operative
assessment, surgery in theatre, follow up in recovery, post
operative care back on the ward and possible rehabilitation
– all areas to be assessed under the medical education
umbrella.
The proposal was shortlisted and Miss Onon as Director
of Postgraduate Medical Education together with our
Chief Executive, Julian Hartley and the Medical Education
Manager, Rachel Koutsavakis, presented to MEE in London
in March. We are delighted to announce that UHSM was
successful in being chosen as one of the pilot sites. We
will be recruiting a Research Fellow and Administrator to
support the project. This is a welcome opportunity to further
improve the surgical experience and training of our Core
Surgical trainees based at UHSM.
We are also honoured that MEE have approached UHSM
Academy to host the official launch of the Better Training,
Better care Programme, which is to take place on 19 June.
Foundation Trainee Posts
UHSM Foundation Programme has just completed an
exciting and innovative reorganisation. We are one of the
few Trusts who have gone through the process of selecting
all foundation supervisors.
This has given us an opportunity to introduce new
specialties and supervisors to our programme. The
Foundation Programme at UHSM remains one of the most
sought after training programmes in the North Western
Deanery and we hope this innovative approach will
maintain our gold standard.
Mandatory Training Passport Project (MTPP)
The MTPP targets all host organisations across the North
West and is developing considerable momentum and
interest. Organisations are actively engaging with Core
Skills Framework implementation and acknowledging
the considerable benefits a ‘Passport’ system could bring
to health sector staff. The North Western Deaneries
E-Induction package will be CSF aligned by July 2012 and
a considerable amount of NHS organisations will also
be CSF accredited in time for the August Junior Doctor
rotations. For any inquiries regarding the MTPP please
contact
timothy.grocott@manchester.ac.uk.
Change of Director of Postgraduate Medical Education
(DMPE) – Miss Toli Onon
It was my privilege to undertake the
role of DMPE at UHSM from October
2008 to the end of April 2012.
During that time I was able to be
part of many exciting developments
in education at UHSM, particularly
with the formation of the Academy.
Medical training has evolved rapidly
in recent years and I have learnt
much about how doctors continue their knowledge
acquisition after qualifying, and how we can benefit
from closer educational links with other professions.
It has been a great pleasure to work with so many
educators and administrators across the Trust, and
I have been very impressed by their commitment to
healthcare professionals’ training. From this month I
am standing down from the role of DPME. I have no
doubt that the Postgraduate Department will thrive
under new leadership. I would like to wish my friends in
Postgraduate Medicine all the very best for the future.
Education Pharmacist and MAU Consultants, Mark
Holland and Ollie Gaillemin,
who were two of our star
teachers. The team and
students will certainly miss
them and wish them well for
the future. We are in the process
of employing Richard Jones
to take over Ollie’s additional
role as Undergraduate Lead
for Year 3 Medicine and Nutrition, Metabolism and
Excretion Module. In addition, we are appointing
Jon Ghosh as Undergraduate Lead for Surgery and
will be recruiting to the post of Staff Development
Lead very soon. For the administrative team, we
are short listing for the post of
Undergraduate Coordinator for
SSCs/Data to replace Miranda
Swift. We had a successful Annual
Review visit by NHSNW and
Manchester University Medical
School in February 2012 and
have also had excellent feedback
from our quality assurance
visits in relation to the Year 5
Student Assistantships, which became a formal
part of the medical course last academic year.
Since January, our mobile skills tutor Rachel
Matthews has delivered 15 training events both
on site on the Skills Bus and at GP Practices across
Manchester for Basic Life Support. In addition,
she has delivered First Aid Courses both on site
in ERC and at local primary schools. The Skills
Bus once again attended Baguley
Hall Primary School for Science
Week. We are now in the process of
providing additional skills teaching/
revision days for our medical
students across Years 3-5 when
on placements at Leighton and
Stepping Hill. The Skills Bus will
be supporting Trust runners in the
Greater Manchester Run. Following Tim Strang’s
appointment, we are now able to concentrate
more efforts on our development of Hi Tech
Simulation Learning. We are very keen to increase
the use of our iStan Patient Simulator to promote
the use of hi tech simulated learning
to all our colleagues at UHSM and
would welcome enquiries and
offers of help for clinicians, nurses,
ODPs, AHPs who would like to know
more about the use of simulation.
In the future, we hope to arrange
“Demonstrations” and “Training
Events” which we will advertise
via the Daily Bulletin. Marylyn
Dickinson, Undergraduate Manager at
ACADEMY News
UHSM Apprenticeship Programme
For many years, UHSM has delivered National
Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) to colleagues
in bands 1-4.
In late 2011, the new Apprenticeship framework
superseded the old NVQ system, and consequently
The UHSM Academy has now replaced its previous
NVQ offer with an apprenticeship framework offer.
In 2011, UHSM Academy applied to Skills For Health,
to become an Accredited Apprenticeship Centre.
As a result of that application, we have recently
been informed that we are to be given Accredited
Apprenticeship Centre status
What is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship is a work-based training framework supplemented with qualifications, from the
Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). These nationally recognised qualifications give the apprentice
transferable qualifications and skills. The modular style of delivery enables the apprentice to achieve
milestones throughout the Apprenticeship.
Apprenticeships are offered on three levels:
• Apprenticeship (level 2)
–this is equivalent to 5 A-C GCSEs.
• Advanced Apprenticeships (level 3) –this is equivalent to 2 A levels.
• Higher Apprenticeships
–this is equivalent to a foundation degree.
UHSM Academy Apprenticeships
The UHSM Academy has commenced a programme of apprenticeships for its colleagues in bands 1-4
and has just had an intense recruitment drive to recruit over 100 colleagues onto the apprenticeship
framework. The majority of these are in Customer Service.
We also have some colleagues undertaking apprenticeships in Business and Administration and
Healthcare.
However, the Apprenticeship Framework is very flexible and can respond to development needs in a wide
variety of service areas. As we go forward and commence delivery of the new People and Organisational
Development Strategy, colleagues will see further increases in training and development opportunities for
all colleagues which are linked to personal development and service needs.
Junior Apprenticeship Pilot
UHSM Academy is working in partnership with Newall Green Secondary School and Manchester Solutions
(part of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce) on a very innovative pilot which will help to encourage
Wythenshawe youngsters to enter the world of work in UHSM.
The pilot is a 12-month training scheme, during which time, 15 eighteen year olds, will follow a level 2
apprenticeship programme in Healthcare. On completion of their training, they will be able to apply for
any suitable vacancies which are available.
The pilot will be subject to evaluation with the view to continuing/extending it in healthcare or other
areas of service.
For more information, contact Hilary Whyatt, Vocational Qualifications Manager – ext 5793
The Trust’s 5-point plan
The Academy is working hard
towards helping the Trust
achieve its 5 point plan for
2012/13.
We are committed to putting
this plan into the heart of
everything we do.
Patients, People, Partnerships -
Our Challenge for 2012/13
We are honest
and open
• We will listen to our
patients and colleagues
and deliver improvements
if and when they are
needed.
• We will measure success
through the National
Patient Survey and the
Annual NHS Staff Survey.
Patient care is
at our heart
• We will continue to work
to make UHSM a safer and
more compassionate
healthcare organisation.
• We will drive for higher
standards of care,
particularly in the way we
look after elderly patients.
We lead, learn
and inspire
• We will work with our
partners in MAHSC and
others to bring real patient
benefit for the work we do
in research, education and
through the clinical trials
we carry out.
• We will maintain our
position as Britain’s
Greenest Hospital by
encouraging ideas and
opportunities to make us
more sustainable.
We are one
talented team
• We will help our colleagues
develop to have the right
skills and attitudes to
deliver the best possible
patient care and
treatment.
• We will create an
environment where people
feel respected and valued.
We strive for
excellence
• We will work more
effectively, with GPs and
our community team
partners, to bring care
closer to home for
patients.
• We will strive to deliver a
challenging £17.5 million
productivity programme
through improvements in
quality and efficiency.
Have you ever been abducted?
No, I’m not trying to recruit you to a UFO chat room to share your experiences of
aliens. This is a standard question in taking a medical history in Gulu. It is one of the
starkest reminders of the threat which has only recently been lifted from the people
of Northern Uganda.
Even if the answer is “No”, listen on and you are very likely to hear of the siblings
who were abducted perhaps never to be heard of again. Or the children or parents
who did not survive to be abducted. Or see the disfigurements and scars left. The
legacy of Joseph Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army will survive many, many
years. Families were fractured and the fault lines will be there to undermine the
emotional lives, relationships and psychological development of many parents as
they strive for better lives for their children. The threats of malnutrition, inadequate
sanitation, malaria, maternal and neonatal mortality loom large but it is a time
when mental health has to be taken seriously alongside these.
In November 2011 we joined a parade through Gulu town centre marking Global
Mental Health Day. In the heat of the tropical sun, we walked behind people whose
tee-shirts bore the slogan “Mental Health Day 2011, the Great Push – investing in
Mental Health”. Many of the people marching were in pairs – a mother with her
tiny baby strapped to her back with a cloth; the baby’s head just visible, headlined
by this bold statement. Many of the marchers were current or ex-patients of the
Mental Health Unit at Gulu Referral Hospital. Their personal statements were
perhaps even bolder than the slogan: mental health still invokes many fears and
myths, stigmatising its sufferers. These were brave people.
Mental health and illness services are being developed but it will be a long march. It
is a major challenge simply to ensure support for those staff already working with
resources and in conditions which would produce outrage in the U.K.. Supporting
these staff to teach and train future clinicians is imperative. To begin to learn about
this and perhaps to contribute is humbling and enriching. It gets under your skin.
On your first day in Gulu, one trip with the Gulu-Man link can turn into two.
Beware. You may find yourself on a flight to Entebbe, abducted by Marian Surgenor
to serve the Gulu-Man Link.
