NUML Organizes Declamation Contests <strong>in</strong> English, Japanese<br />

Students of English speech contest with Dr. Riaz Hasan, Col. (R) Javed<br />

and Mufti Jamiludd<strong>in</strong> Ahmad, Visit<strong>in</strong>g Professor at NUML<br />

“We are not here to play, to dream, to drift. We have hard<br />

work to do and loads to lift. Shun not the struggle is God's<br />

gift” was the topic of a student <strong>in</strong> the English declamation<br />

contest held <strong>in</strong> NUML recently.<br />

A total of 11 students participated <strong>in</strong> the bi-annual English<br />

speech contest held <strong>in</strong> the Department of English. Some<br />

other <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g topics of speeches were: “The ma<strong>in</strong><br />

obligation of a Muslim is to preach Islam”, “Science is a<br />

curse more than a bless<strong>in</strong>g”, “What is the most important<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g to succeed <strong>in</strong> life effort, talent or fate?” and “Honour<br />

kill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Pakistan”. The topics of the extempore speeches<br />

were chosen by the students themselves.<br />

Speak<strong>in</strong>g at the occasion, Dr. Riaz Hassan, Dean, Quality<br />

Enhancement, <strong>Research</strong> and Publication, appreciated the<br />

highest level of speeches made by the participat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

students.<br />

were “Tourist attractions of<br />

Pakistan”, “My City Gujranwala”<br />

and “Seasons of Pakistan”<br />

respectively. Zahid Mahmood left it<br />

to the discretion of the audience to<br />

decide the topic of his humorous<br />

speech.<br />

In his welcome address, Rector<br />

NUML said that the Japanese<br />

Department was one of the<br />

pioneer departments of the<br />

university. Similarly, Japan was the<br />

country to have established the<br />

first language laboratory <strong>in</strong> NUML.<br />

“Japan and Pakistan are good friends and will<br />

rema<strong>in</strong> so <strong>in</strong> future as well. The reciprocal<br />

friendship between the two countries is based on<br />

card<strong>in</strong>al pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of justice, equality and<br />

brotherhood”, the Rector remarked.<br />

Earlier, Col. (R) Jawaid Ahmad, Head of the Department,<br />

emphasized the importance of acquir<strong>in</strong>g knowledge without<br />

which a nation stands nowhere. “Progress of a nation<br />

entirely depends on acquisition of knowledge”, he said.<br />

In the end, Dr. Riaz Hassan gave away prizes and<br />

certificates to the speakers. Sana Zaheer of the BAML (2nd<br />

Semester) topped the list while Syed Waqas Ali and Raza<br />

Abbas secured second and third positions respectively.<br />

Consolation prize went to Nosheen Ghulam.<br />

In the Japanese contest, six students participated. Mr. Seiji<br />

Kojima, Ambassador of Japan was the guest of honour at<br />

the occasion. The event was also attended by a large<br />

number of diplomatic staff of the Japanese Embassy.<br />

Javed Khan spoke on “Quaid-e-Azam”, while the topic of the<br />

speech by Mateeh-ur-Rahman was “Lahore the heart of<br />

Pakistan”. The topics of other speakers Shahid Nadeem, Atta<br />

Japanese Ambassador gives away prize to the best<br />

speaker <strong>in</strong> Japanese speech contest.<br />

Speak<strong>in</strong>g at the occasion, Mr. Seiji Kojima<br />

eulogized the proficiency of the student speakers<br />

<strong>in</strong> the language they were learn<strong>in</strong>g at the<br />

university. He profusely complimented the<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g staff for their hard work and dedication<br />

which was reflective <strong>in</strong> the performance of the<br />

students at the declamation contest.<br />

Zahid Mahmood of Diploma Course was declared<br />

the best speaker while Shahid Nadeem and<br />

Mateeh-ur-Raman were adjudged second and<br />

third respectively.<br />
