ANNUAL REPORT 2007-2008 High School Mr. Tony Koski, Principal Thornapple Kellogg High School serves the needs of students in grades 9 through 12. North Central Association accreditation was extended through the 2007-08 school year. This accreditation verifies our commitment to providing a quality education to our students and striving for continuous improvement in our school. In 2005-2007, TKHS made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), was not identified by the state for improvement, and received an “A” on the State School Report Card. TK High School is not considered a specialized school. However, students at TKHS have available to them the opportunities for educational programs at the Kent Career/Technical Center. Students have access to Michigan Virtual High School, Odyssey of the Mind, Science Olympiad, Business Professionals of America, Michigan Industrial and Technology Educational Society, and many other academic programs. Student Council, Environmental Action Council, and National Honor Society were just some of the organizations available to students. We also offer students opportunities on 48 athletic teams. Thornapple Kellogg High School has a Parent Advisory Committee in place. All parents are welcome to attend. The High School’s official state enrollment count on the September 2007 Count Date was: 9th Grade 214 11th Grade 211 10th Grade 231 12th Grade 256 School Improvement Most of our school improvement efforts focused around the Michigan Merit Curriculum. Staff development and staff meetings were devoted to finding new approaches and strategies to bring rigor, relevance, and relationships into the classrooms to allow for even greater student achievement. The use of data to analyze student achievement was essential in this process. Utilizing the International Center for Leadership in Education will assist our teachers with improving classroom instruction. Our curricular focus on the Michigan Merit Curriculum will persist and the Michigan Merit Exam will be one tool we measure ourselves by in this area. We continue to work with the North Central Accreditation process. The following Advanced Placement classes were offered to students: AP Literature, AP Chemistry, AP Computer Science, AP Government, AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP History, and AP Music Theory. School Improvement Goals • All students will demonstrate improvement in writing across the curriculum • All students will demonstrate improvement in reading comprehension and analytical skills in content reading • All students will demonstrate improvement in number sense and numeration, and algebraic reasoning across the curriculum Page 10 School Improvement Initiatives from the 2007-08 School Year • Articulation agreements between local colleges/universities for our students to receive credits • More academic co-curricular offerings for our students • Teaching staff focus on common assessments • Concentration on the national Career Readiness Certificate • Communication improvement through added student progress reports, increased counseling contact, orientations, online grading (ParentConnectXP), open house, parent advisory meetings, better website utilization, increased written communications, etc. • Data use to improve student achievement including the Kent Intermediate School District’s Data Warehouse • Increased school-to-work student opportunities like internships • Work with the Harvard Change Network through the Kent Intermediate School District to improve daily classroom instruction • K-12 articulation efforts • International Center for Leadership in Education Model Schools participation • Data analysis position to organize information to improve student achievement • Success of students in our freshmen transition English course • Increased student participation in math labs and reading improvement class • Literacy coach to help coordinate literacy efforts for our students • Data person to analyze information to improve student achievement • Michigan Merit Curriculum Coordinator to help facilitate curriculum mapping and changes • Michigan Merit Curriculum alignment and implementation • Michigan Merit Exam test preparation including ACT • Staff participation in the Flippen Group Capturing Kids’ Hearts • Summer Academy and after school programs for students that utilized NovaNet for credit recovery • Targeted students with special need to improve their achievement • Improve student achievement and instruction through departmental professional learning communities, classroom visits, and school visits Graduation Rate 2008 Graduates: 250 seniors – 243 Graduated (7 seniors returning 08/09 school year) The number and percentage of students who received college credit through dual enrollment for this year and the previous years: 2007-08 32 students enrolled/ 32 students received credit = 100% 2006-07 10 students enrolled/ 10 students received credit = 100% 2005-06 8 students enrolled/ 8 students received credit = 100%
ANNUAL REPORT 2007-2008 Alternative Education Mrs. Mari Price, Director Thornapple Kellogg Alternative Education provides students with an optional setting to learn outside of the traditional high school classroom. The alternative education staff provides students with skills to become successful members of the community after graduation. Small class sizes offer more individualized attention for those who do not do well in the traditional setting. Students often return to the high school to complete their education. Twenty-seven students, grades 9 – 12, were enrolled during the course of the 2007 – 2008 school year. Four students graduated in the spring. Community Education The purpose of the Community Education office is to provide connections between the community and the school, as well as offering many programs to the community and TK students. Programs conducted through the Community Education Department: • Preschool Programs for 3 and 4 year old children • Senior Citizen trips and activities such as: * Cornwell Dinner Theatre Trip * Monthly Senior Citizen’s Meetings * Holiday Luncheon * High School Musical and Play Receptions • Co-pilot mentoring program • Community and School Enrichment classes such as: * Dance * Finance * Dog Obedience * Technology * Snowmobile Safety * Foreign Language * Karate * And many more! * Art Classes • TK Facility Reservations • Early Childhood program – Bright Beginnings and Parents As Teachers Page 11
