ANNUAL REPORT 2007-2008 Page Elementary Mrs. Dona Raymer, Principal Page Elementary serves the fourth and fifth grade population of Thornapple Kellogg Schools. In 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 Page Elementary made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). The State of Michigan has awarded Page Elementary a letter grade of “A” each of those years. We are also accredited through the Michigan State Department of Education. Page Elementary creates a positive learning environment for all of the approximately 430 fourth and fifth grade students. We are accredited through the Michigan State Department of Education for our data driven school improvement process. Page students are offered a variety of co-curricular opportunities including, but not limited to, Odyssey of the Mind, Chess Club, and our Page Job Corps. Our school was honored in 2003 as a recipient of the Michigan Association of School Boards Excellence Award for our Page Job Corps career prep program. We were honored in 2008 by the International Reading Association as Michigan’s Exemplary Reading Program award winner. Page’s official state enrollment count on the September 2007 Count Date was: Page 8 4th Grade 223 5th Grade 212 School Improvement As an integral part of our district’s change/improvement initiatives, the staff at Page Elementary focuses their efforts on The Seven Disciplines for Strengthening Instruction. • Page Elementary creates understanding and urgency around improving ALL students’ learning for teachers and community, and they regularly report on progress. • There is a widely shared vision of what is good teaching, which is focused on rigor, the quality of student engagement, and effective methods for personalizing learning for all students. • All adult meetings are about instruction and are models of good teaching. • There are well-defined standards and performance assessments for student work. Both teachers and students understand what quality work looks like, and there is consistency in standards of assessment. • Supervision is frequent, rigorous, and entirely focused on the improvement of instruction. • Professional development is primarily on-site, intensive, collaborative, and job-embedded and is designed and led by educators who model best teaching and learning practices. • Data is used diagnostically at frequent intervals by teams of teachers to assess each student’s learning and to identify the most effective teaching practices. Teams have built time into their schedules for this shared work. School Improvement Goals • All students will demonstrate improvement in writing across the curriculum • All students will improve reading comprehension across the curriculum • All students will demonstrate improvement in their ability to draw inferences and make conclusions using tables, charts, and graphs across the curriculum Literacy Coaching A full-time literacy coach works with both teachers and students. Teachers are provided training and support in guided/flexible grouping, writer’s notebook, test-taking strategies, curriculum alignment, common assessments, and CASL (Collaborative Analysis of Student Learning). Book Study All teachers at Page Elementary use differentiated instruction and recognize that there is a group of top students who need more of a challenge. Thus, a book study was implemented. These students are selected based on their Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) scores, MEAP scores, and classroom performance. Students use a literature circle format while reading higher level books. Reading Mentor Program Page Elementary has a Reading Mentor Program to assist students who need more time developing their reading skills. Parents volunteer as mentors and are trained on comprehension and fluency strategies. These parent volunteers devote one to two hours per week to Page students as reading mentors. Students are selected for the program using Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) scores, MEAP data, and teacher recommendation. Parental Involvement Page Elementary has an active PTO, which holds regularly scheduled meetings and organizes volunteer projects throughout the year, including student assemblies, fund raising, staff appreciation, field trips, and other special days.
ANNUAL REPORT 2007-2008 Middle School Mr. Jon Washburn, Principal The State of Michigan has awarded TKMS a letter grade of “A” for the past three years! All teachers meet certification requirements and our school improvement plan has been approved. TK Middle School has met state Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and continues to show achievement growth each year focusing on literacy, math, science, and social studies. TK Middle School offers many club activities such as school newspaper, yearbook, chess, student council, golf, computers, current events, drama/play, creative writing, and 6th-8th grade Odyssey of the Mind teams. Interscholastic sports for 7th and 8th grade such as cross country, girls and boys basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and track are also offered. Parents are a welcome and important part of our program. Please feel free to contact teachers, administrators, and support staff regarding questions, concerns, and ideas that you have. You’re invited to visit classes, to chaperone activity nights and class trips, and to take an active role in school life. Please give us a call and we can make arrangements. We have an active Parent Advisory Committee that is always looking to increase their membership for valued input. The Middle School’s official state enrollment count on the September 2007 Count Date was: 6th Grade 200 7th Grade 227 8th Grade 244 School Improvement We examined student performance on specific assessments, took information from staff, student, and parent surveys, and then analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of each academic area. We then triangulated each identified goal area by using multiple sources of data to support and clarify each performance goal. Student achievement is our number one priority. We have planned an interdisciplinary approach to our goals – realizing that enhancement of reading and writing skills will benefit all curricular areas. School Improvement Goals • All students will demonstrate improvement in writing in all classes • All students will demonstrate improvement in reading comprehension skills across the curriculum • All students will demonstrate improvement in social studies skills in a variety of ways • All students will demonstrate improvement in math across the curriculum Staff members have participated in CRISS Training, Kansas Training, 6+1 Traits Writing, Collins Writing, and other inservices Page 9
