ROUND 9 V BBC & AWARD WINNERS
Great Game in Good Company

1 st XV TSS 51 – BBC 17
For only the third time this season TSS fielded a full strength team which was to battle
out who would come second on the premiership ladder.
ROUND 9 REPORTS V BBC
BBC fielded a team not lacking in size and they started strongly and kicked an early
penalty however Mitch Third quickly returned the favour twice. BBC then scored out
wide and converted and continued to make various breaks and only determined defence
frustrated them. Mitch then broke through to run about 50 metres brushing off
defenders. Soon after, good work from Joel Brown allowed Isaak Fines-Leleiwasa to
make half a break and offload to Evander Guttenbeil to run 20 metres to score which
Mitch converted. The half time was 13-10 even though Jake Upfield was resting on
the sideline after giving the referee some advice. The tide was turning!
Joey Fittock could not play on so Ben Peace replaced him at half time. Early pressure
resulted in the forwards using a smart lineout move near the line and Jake Lyon
scored. After a great pressure catch by Ed Gibson quick hands got the ball to Ben
for a 15 metre break and then pick and drives lead to Captain Sam Clifton scoring.
From the kick-off Joel made one of the best forward kick returns ever with a 50 metre
run and then quick hands from the ruck enabled Ben to score in the corner followed
by a Mitch conversion. Soon after an inside pass to Ed resulted in another try.
Next was a great team try which started within our 22 with many passes and continuity
resulted in Jake Upfield scoring. Two penalties to BBC lead to them scoring out
wide and converting. A number of substitutions were being made, however Isaak
showed a slight of hand and good line running from Ed resulted in him scoring
again. Mitch converted, which gave him 2 penalties, 5 conversions a number of
breaks and dominance in directing the game.
Coach points therefore went to Mitch followed by Sam Clifton and Ed Gibson and
honourable mentions to the rest of the team. This team has scored the most tries,
52, in living memory but again fallen agonising short of a GPS premiership. Interesting
enough is that the forwards have scored 33 of these and the top try scorer was
Luke Papworth with 9.
The coaching staff wish to thank everyone who has supported the First XV in so
many ways throughout the season. Best wishes to the select few who have gained
higher honours and will represent Australia and Australia A over the holidays. Congratulations
to the prize winners named at the presentation night and they all know
‘the star is the rest of the team!’
ROUND 9 REPORTS V BBC
The best way to describe the 2nds performance against BBC is, “They left their
best till last!!!” A rampaging, physically dominating display by TSS, over ran what
certainly looked like a big BBC side at the start, but ended up being little match
for this top TSS side. Again a wonderful display and strong platform was set by
the forwards, and the backs in this usual flair, scored 6 tries to take the match
well away for BBC. With 7 wins, and a draw for the season, the 2 nd XV can be
well proud of their achievements, in particular the Year 12s who now leave the
school with an undefeated season under their belt. Big thanks to Coaches Col
and Clint for all their help and assistance this year. Very much appreciated by all
players, and parents.
Tries – Hickson, Lyons, C Chapman, Menzies, Rose, Pearce
Conversions – Campbell x 2
2 nd XV Best Back – Jock Campbell
2 nd XV Best Forward – Nathan Lyons
2 nd XV Best Team Man – Chalie Chapman
3 rd XV TSS 52 - BBC 0
The final game was an important game for the thirds, as it was their last hurdle to
have an Un-Defeated Season. The boys came out firing scoring 3 quick tries in
succession. From there, unfortunately some poor decision making allowed BBC
the opportunity to fight back. With relentless defence from TSS especially Karl
Schroder making a try saving tackle, the TSS side were able to keep BBC to nil.
The second half was definitely better with TSS opening up the game, and scoring
another 5 tries to close it. The forwards were led by Shaun making tackle breaking
runs this giving the backs time to set up there plays. It has been a good season
for the team only letting in two tries to finish like this was well deserved.
GEORGE MILROY
Tries – McMahon x 3, Rogers x 2, Maipakai, Freeman, Kay
Conversions – McMahon x 6
3 rd XV Most Improved – Karl Schroder
3 rd XV Best Clubman – Thomas Chelleri
3 rd XV Best & Fairest – Andrew McMahon

ROUND 9 REPORTS V BBC
4 th XV TSS 96 – BBC 0
What can I say, the last game for the 4ths was always going to be a amazing
game for the boys due to it was going to be nearly the whole teams last game
for the Red, White and Blue. The boys started great right from the opening
whistle. The structure was a little scratchy at the start but after the first two
try’s the boys settled into a rhythm which was a great style of rugby. The forwards
dominated from their hard running of the middle and the backs were
just using their moves which was finding themselves in space nearly ever
move which was great to see for the last game. One minute Robert Porter
was scoring a try and then the next James Scott was in space, the boys were
running all over the BBC boys which left the mighty undefeated 4ths winning
their last game 96 -0 to BCC. The boys would like to thank Col and Mrs Norman
on the great season also well done to all the boys on the great season
and for the water boys for looking after us. By Charlie Upton
Tries – Angus Mckillop, Alex Purton x2, Mackenzie Goninan, James Scott,
Sam Rasmussen, Will Robinson, Harry Begg, Nick Turnbull, Nick Crossley
x1, George Lethbridge x4 and Rob Porter x5 (and also best and fairs of the
4ths).
Conversions – Nick Turnbull and Will Robinson x1 and George Lethbridge x5
ROUND 9 REPORTS V BBC
A great end to the season with three outstanding wins . All teams helped the Age
Group achieve an 85% win to loss ratio for the season. Special thanks to Director
of Rugby Adrian Blundell and coaches Peter Bromley, Grant Anderson, Ben
Cramp, Bruce Deacon, Dean Galpin, DavidTyquin and Max Christensen. A huge
thanks to parent Marty Stone for his professional linesman commitment over the
season. A most successful season.
U16A TSS 44 – BBC 7
The 16 A victory meant that they tied with Nudgee as the most outstanding team
in the 16 A division. Coach Bromley has now achieved this honour for the past
three seasons. A wonderful nursery for the Opens next year. The boys totally
dominated the opposition in the forwards and the backs winning 44-7. Tries were
scored by Jordan Brook 2 and one each to Justin Whatmore, Harrison Jurgs,
Cooper McKenzie, Tyler Campbell, and Ben Turnbull. Liam Longbottom converted
three times and kicked a penalty goal. These boys were a wonderful bench mark
for the entire age group. Thank you boys!
16A Best Forward – Cooper McKenzie
16A Best Back – Tyler Campbell
Patrick Sharpe Memorial – Chase Perkins
U16B TSS 55 – BBC 10
The 16 B's bounced back after last week's shock defeat winning 55-10 in a powerful
display. Coaches Cramp and Deacon were pleased with the renewed vigour in
the performance of all boys. Tries were scored by Ethan Lolesio 2, Max Kenny 2
and one each to Lachlan Bechaz, Matt Witheriff, Cleve Barrell, Ben Rowland and
Carl Gooch. Cleve Barrell converted five times.
16B Best & Fairest – Cleve Barrell
U16C TSS 57 – BBC 7
The 16 C team totally dominated the opposition winning 57-7. The forwards were
brilliant with Josh Nielson outstanding.
Tries were scored by Kaipu Maipakai 2 and one each to Joe Darcy, Matt Loiaconi,
Aaron Reading, Rory MacInnes, Jacob Branch, Brayden Williams and Sam
Parkes. Sam also converted six of the tries. Coach Galpin cannot speak highly
enough of the boys' performances throughout the season. He would dearly love to
play to play GT again. The first round loss was the only one for the season.
16C Best & Fairest – Aaron Reading
16D Best & Fairest – Cody Close
As manager of this age group for the season I must say how proud it has been to
be associated with such a fine group of young men. TSS is in good hands for the
future.
U15 Rugby Report
ROUND 9 REPORTS V BBC
15A TSS 12 – BBC 26
It was going to be a hard fought game as both teams scored with first touches of
the ball. Missed tackles allowed BBC to score right before half time. The second
half continued to be fast paced moving from try line to try line with BBC able to get
one up scoring two tries to TSS’s one.
Tries: Jack Leavy, Buddy Stanley
Conversion: Hayden Sargeant
Best Back: Callum Taylor, Hayden Sargeant, Best Forward: Jack Leavy
15A Best Forward – Will Rudland
15A Best Forward – Hayden Sargeant
15B TSS 5 – BBC 21
BBC were able to capitalis on loose ball as TSS struggled with body height resulting
in two BBC tries in the first half. BBC were the first to score again in the second
half through a kick and chase until TSS finally gained momentum with quick
hands allowed TSS to score in the corner.
Try: Jonathon Kafritsas
Best Back: Callum Taylor, Best Forward: Thomas Ross
15B Best & Fairest – Ben Weiland
15C TSS 14 – BBC 21
TSS were the first to get points on the board with a try as a result of good hands
and quick line speed. However TSS were plagued with missed tackles which allowed
BBC to respond with two tries. A quick run from the scrum allowed TSS to
score again right before half time. Again in the second half missed tackles allowed
to BBC to score the only points for the half.
Tries: James Trotter, Joe Connolly.
Conversions: Bevan Churchill (2).
Best Back: Thomas Cunich, Best Forward: Will Schwarer
15C Best & Fairest – Kevin Nicholls
15D TSS 27 – BBC 17
Both teams fought hard to gain momentum, TSS were the first to score right before
half time. BBC came out hard in the second half scoring a try early. Both teams
traded blows but TSS had the final say running in four tries to BBC’s three.
Tries: Daniel O’Neill, Mark Johnson, Albert Manderson, Will Schwarer.
Conversion: Adam Harry
15D Best & Fariest – Mark Johnson
U14A TSS 15 - BBC 24
ROUND 9 REPORTS V BBC
Buoyed by an improved performance and first victory last week, the A’s started the game
against BBC with confidence and flare. Some great team play saw the visitors skip out to
a lead late in the half which they held going into half time. A very passionate halftime
speech from all three coaches seemed to lift the visitors but unfortunately the BBC attack
stepped up a few gears in the 2 nd half and ran over 2 tries within 5 minutes to leave TSS
stunned. Despite the setback TSS finished the regular season showing glimpses of a side
that will not be pushed around next year. There were moments throughout the season of
sheer brilliance and also frustration; experiences which will make this team a much
stronger, tight knit unit heading into the future.
14A Best Back – Max Dowd
14A Best Forward – Jack Butler
U14 Goal Kicking Champion – Josh Flatley
U14B TSS 22 – BBC 33
The B’s started strongly against BBC and looked a force to be reckoned with in the final
game of the season. But as has proved the case throughout the season, a strong start
doesn’t always equate to a victory. As the match went on little mistakes again cost the visitors
dearly with BBC scoring off a number of Southport errors. The boot of Josh Flatley
kept the visitors in the game but the attacking strength of BBC proved too much for TSS
today. A mixed season certainly, but one which has been character building and will help
shape and define this team for the 2014 season.
14B Best & Fairest – Jackson Lathouras
U14C TSS 19 - BBC 26
If there were 5 more minutes in this game TSS would have come from behind to snatch a
draw. Unfortunately being down 19 – 0 at halftime meant the visitors left themselves with
too much to do too late in the game. The C’s looked lost early in the1st half with wave after
wave of BBC raids proving too much for TSS. The half time reprieve could not have
come sooner and the coach’s message couldn’t have been blunter. With a 2 nd half that
harked back to the remarkable comeback game against Churchie, TSS began to play
more consistently and began to string a few points together. Unfortunately it was too little
too late but there are many positives to take out of the season which will help this squad
in coming years.
14C Best & Fairest – William Donaldson
U14D TSS 41 - BBC 10
After only 15 minutes the 14 D’s were up 29 – 0 against BBC who were destined to
have a long day at the office. This side has played extremely well all year and is no surprise
they have been awarded the most successful team in the U14 age group. Mitch
Backler scored a hat trick today adding to a list of hat trick try scorers from this team
this season. Another fantastic team try came as a cross field kick found a flying Joel
Shields who scored late in the 2 nd half as TSS finished the season in style winning 41 –
10. 14D Best & Fairest - Sandy Hickson

U13 Rugby Report
ROUND 9 REPORTS V BBC
U13A TSS 5 - BBC 5
A tense and exciting end of season match up saw TSS hold out against the more
fancied BBC for a draw. Coaches Dobrenov, Melia and McFarlane commended
the team for courage and heart in putting their bodies on the line for each other
and all agree that it had been a pleasure to coach the 13As this season. Captain
Lachlan Vine noted the significant improvement the team had made from preseason
and thanked players for their efforts during the entire season and particularly
in the hard-fought game of the day. Harry Cox scored the try at the end of a
strong team play. Coaches' best were Hugh Robinson, Lachlan Bruce and Lachlan
Vine. At the Rugby Presentation evening in the TSS Centenary Centre after
the day's games, Captain Lachlan Vine gave a comprehensive and articulate U13
season report sharing players' highlights from all four U13 teams. Lachlan Vine
was named U13s Best Forward, Joseph Knox Best Back, Tom van der Schyff
was the U13 nominee for Best Junior Footballer, Tyson Spisich was nominated
for inclusion in the 'Front Row Club' and Ethan Setchell was named as the U13
Best Defender.
U13B TSS 0 - BBC 26
A character-building match in which TSS fought hard for little reward saw BBC
securing the points. Coach McFarlane congratulated players on their efforts during
this game and the entire season, noting the development of individual players
and the team, both technically and in knowledge of game strategy. Captain Spencer
Jeans noted the mateship the team had developed through the challenges &
successes of the season. Coach's best were Dougal Coleman, Geoffrey Swan &
Spencer Jeans and Spencer was named 13Bs Best & Fairest at the Rugby
Presentation evening held in the Centenary Centre.

ROUND 9 REPORTS V BBC
U13 Rugby Report
U13C TSS 24 - BBC 17
An exciting win against BBC secured the hotly contested TSS U13 Most Successful
Team award for the Cs. Coach Trevethan enthused "It has been fantastic to see
the boys come together as a team, which was the strength that got us over the line
to score a try in the last minute to win the game and top off a great season". Coach
Close agreed the camaraderie of the boys had become its greatest
strength. Coaches' best were Sebastian Greenup, Angus Giles and Hamish King.
U13C Best and Fairest was awarded to Hamish King at the Rugby Presentations
held in the TSS Centenary Centre after the BBC fixture and Sam Neal was named
U13 Goal Kicking Champion across all four U13 teams.
U13D TSS 14 - BBC 34
Again the Ds brought their best game to the second half, outscoring BBC but with
too great a deficit to close the margin. Player Henry Waller observed "We flogged
them in the second half" and Archer Southward commented "It was great game,
and I think we've had a great season". Tries were scored by Archer Southwood
and Chris Whap, both converted by Reilly Gall. Coaches' best were Demitri Levendakis,
Henry Waller and Reilly Gall. 13Ds Best & Fairest for the season went to
Sam Moffat.
Ms Jo Inglis - U13 Coordinator
