Many of you have attended Estate Safety
roadshows in recent weeks and the Estate
Safety and Anti-social behaviour team will
continue to meet residents and visit estates
throughout the summer.
The roadshows are an opportunity to report
concerns or issues you may have relating to
anti-social behaviour in confidence to a Hackney
Homes staff member and find out how it will
be dealt with.
There will be a chance to meet officers from
your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team and
Police and to talk to staff from Hackney Council’s
Community Safety Team.
If you have a dog, you can also get advice on
responsible dog ownership and information on
low cost vaccinations, neutering, flea and worm
treatment. Advice will also be on offer about
noise nuisance and where to go to get help.
Road shows will take place from 2pm
– 4pm. If you are concerned about anti-social
behaviour or if you would like more information
on the roadshows you can contact the team on
some food, we want to help you.
We are already supporting a range
Hackney, residents are already
turning simple green spaces on their
estates into beautiful herb gardens.
Starting a community garden
is a shared effort. That is why it is
essential that it’s not just you. Speak
to your local tenants and residents
association or if you don’t have one,
make sure that there are at least five
of you interested in starting the
While there are exceptions to the cap including those
where someone receives disability benefit, the new
rules will apply in the majority of cases.
Why not sign up to pay your rent by Direct Debit?
This is the easiest way for you to pay and also the most cost-effective way for us to
collect your payments. You have a choice of three payment dates, either the 1st, 8th
or 16th of each month. Your Direct Debit will continue year on year so there is no need
for you to contact your bank unless you want to cancel it.
To sign up to Direct Debit, complete and return the Direct Debit form you received
with your recent rent statement. You can trust Direct Debit to be totally secure.
For more information visit: www.hackneyhomes.org.uk
It is important that your rent is paid regularly. If you are going away during the
summer, please make sure you have the right arrangements in place to pay your rent.
Remember you need permission before making alterations to your home
It has come to our attention that some leaseholders have made alterations to the internal and
external parts of their homes without first obtaining landlords consent.
Examples of the types of alterations that have been carried out by leaseholders who have not obtained
landlord’s consent include the removal of walls to create open plan space, the relocation of or creation of
bathroom or toilet, combining the bathroom and toilet into one room and converting loft spaces and
basements into flats.
Unauthorised alterations can put the building structure at risk and should not be carried out.
For more information regarding alterations to your home contact the team on 020 8356 2298 or email
Celebrating Gypsy,
Roma and
Traveller month
Throughout June, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller
communities across Britain celebrated Gypsy, Roma
and Traveller History Month (GRTHM) to raise
awareness and explore the history of the largest ethnic
minority community in the European Union.
Britain’s 300,000 Gypsies, Roma and Travellers have lived,
worked and travelled throughout Britain for over 500 years, yet
little is known about their history and culture. The result
is a widespread ignorance about who they are, which
sometimes turns to hatred, fear and misunderstanding.
Throughout the month, Hackney Homes and Hackney Council
together with the Traveller Education Service, the Hackney
Empire and the London Gypsy and Traveller Unit held a series
of free interactive family events to help raise awareness of
Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities in the borough.
Summer 2013
PEOPLE
Taking a victim centred approach
We have recently adopted a more “victim centred” approach to managing anti-social
behaviour (asb). Hackney Homes’ ASB forum members were recently asked if they would
be interested in forming a victim support group made up of residents. Alice Burke, ASB
Champion and Vice Chair of the Board visited Walsall Housing Group last year to speak
to their Victim Support Group. A Victim Support Committee on was established on 1 May
2013 to help give emotional support to victims of anti-social behaviour. For more
information on the forum or to report asb contact the team on 020 8356 3310.
Reporting a repair
Our repairs contact centre is here to help you with maintaining your internal and external repairs. You can report
your repair over the phone by calling the Repairs Contact Centre on 020 8356 3691, 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. Non emergency repairs can also be reported at www.hackneyhomes.org.uk. You will be issued with a
unique reference number for each repair that you report. As each repair has a warranty period, it is important
that you let us know if the problem re-occurs. All Hackney Homes operatives carry staff identification cards.
If you are in doubt, do not let anyone in and call the contact centre for further clarification.
Honouring our residents
Police officers, residents,
Council staff and volunteers
were among those honoured
at Hackney Police Borough
Commander Matthew Horne’s
commendation ceremony.
Family and friends gathered to
watch as those who have gone
beyond the call of duty to make a
difference in Hackney were
celebrated at the Town Hall.
Cllr Sophie Linden, Deputy
Mayor, joined Matthew Horne,
Borough Commander, to present
more than 30 local heroes with
certificates to thank them for their
hard work and dedication.
Among them were several
Hackney Homes residents,
including David White, who was
recognised for his work in
reducing anti-social behaviour on
Beecholme Estate and for
encouraging residents to take
responsibility for dog mess,
making the area safer area for
children to play.
Neighbours Patricia Brown and
Ida Scoullos have also played a
key role in tackling anti-social
behaviour on Hawksley Court
Estate. They run projects aimed at
giving young people something to
do, but also improving the
relationship between younger and
older residents.
Ida said:
“Working in partnership
with residents, officers
and the police as well as
work done through the
asb forum has shown
that we can make a real
change. We have built
a strong relationship
between the young
people and adults alike
on our estates.”
Denise Bingham, Chair of Acton
Estate TRA was commended for
her ongoing dedication to tackling
anti-social behaviour and her
contribution to transforming the
look of her estate.
Council, police, probation and
Crown Prosecution Service staff
were also awarded for their work
investigating gang related crime.
Interested in volunteering?
The Volunteer Centre Hackney and Hackney Homes continue to work in partnership to
offer residents opportunities to develop their skills in the work place. In May two local
volunteers – Marlyse Tecanga Bitsa and Francoise Ngueg – concluded their volunteering
stints within the Community Projects Team. Marlyse said: “I have learned a lot with
Hackney Homes. After five years out of employment and at home raising children, the
volunteering scheme allowed me to regain my confidence and learn new office skills.” The
volunteering service is ongoing; there are placements both within Hackney Homes and
with external agencies in Hackney. For more information, contact project coordinator Leah
Top award for
Hackney resident
Young Hackney Homes resident, Bianca Dorsett
celebrated after winning the ‘Most Outstanding
Resident’ – under 25s category in the 2013 National
Federation of ALMOs (NFA) awards.
Almost 200 individuals came together for the ceremony
at the Midland Hotel, Manchester on Tuesday 9 July.
For the seventh year running, the NFA Awards continues
to recognise the achievements of ALMOs (arm’s length
management organisations) and rewards individuals,
projects and teams who make a significant difference to
their local community.
Out of the 110 finalists across the eight categories,
Bianca’s devotion to improving her local community was
notably recognised. Bianca, who is an active member of
her local community, works through Hackney Homes
Youth Engagement Project (YEP) and Youth Active Residents
Group to improve relationship between young tenants and
the community.
Makeover for local hall
Apprentices from Hackney Homes and
Building Lives Training Academy recently
completed the refurbishment of local
community hall, Whiston and Goldsmith.
The apprentices gave the old hall a new
makeover; refreshing the interior and exterior of
the building.
Walls and fences were all re-painted. The
windows were given a new lease of life,
removing the old metal effect, sanding down
and replacing with fresh white paint.
The group also worked on the garden area at
the back of the community hall, jet washing the
tarmac, cutting back weeds, and trimming the
trees. Hackney Homes apprentice, Harry
Barlow said
“As a group we’ve enjoyed seeing
the improvements to the
community hall. I’ve had fun being
part of this project and as I grew
up in this area. It’s nice to be part
of something that I know will make
a difference to the local people. “
Carbon Monoxide awareness
Hackney Homes and Public Health England
officers were invited to a parliamentary seminar
that took place in the House of Commons on
Wednesday 12 June, to give a presentation on
establishing the burden of carbon monoxide
exposure in local authority housing in Hackney.
To date we have installed over 23,000 carbon
monoxide detectors, detecting the presence of
carbon monoxide exposure within properties across
the borough.
CO is a deadly poisonous gas, produced by
unsafe gas appliances and if you are exposed to it,
can have fatal consequences.
If you are a Hackney Homes tenant, we will
service your gas appliances every twelve months.
Leaseholders are responsible for getting their
appliances checked each year. The Leasehold and
Right to Buy team are able to assist with advice on
contractors who provide a discounted service.
Contact the team on 020 8356 2288 for more info.
Many residents ask us about the schedule of tasks for cleaning
and gardening on estates. These are normally displayed
in the communal entrances or lifts or in some cases estate notice
boards. However, in the event that you are unable to locate your
schedule, a copy can be obtained from your local Neighbourhood
Housing Office, online at: www.hackneyhomes.org.uk/
estate-cleaning or contact Estate Environment Services on
020 8356 1934 or email ees@hackneyhomes.org.uk
