13. This year saw the highest number of awards being given out in the 14-year
history of the BCA Awards for Construction Excellence – a total of 14 Award
winners from six categories: Commercial Building, Residential Buildings
($1000/m 2 & above), Residential Buildings (below $1,000/m 2 ), Industrial Buildings,
Institutional Buildings and Civil Engineering Projects. Another 13 projects were
awarded Certificates of Merit.
14. The award winning projects have scored well in terms of the award's
assessment criteria - contractor’s overall management, technical capability and
innovations, and the quality of the completed projects. This year, 15 of the 27
winning projects were bagged by 11 local contractors, a testimony to their
increased awareness and commitment to construction quality.
15. The overseas contractors have also done well. 12 of the winning projects
were won by seven construction giants, mainly from Korea and Japan, including a
French company.
16. Some of the more unique features of this year's winning crop include:
• Centennial Tower – Early involvement in the project design allows
the contractor to incorporate innovative construction methods that
improve buildability and productivity e.g. extensive use of system
formwork and precast components to achieve better accuracy and
finish that eliminated the need for plastering.
• The URA Centre – Of special mention is the use of innovative
tension cable truss system for the 5-storey high atrium glass walls.
In addition, a canopy is supported by aluminium rafters with truss
ends fixed to the concrete structure by a revolutionary spring and
collapsible washer system that is able to absorb any building
movement.
• Peirce Villas – Due to the customised design for every bungalow,
the marble flooring for each bungalow is unique in terms of patterns,
border designs, skirting, etc. The marble panels are subjected to dry
lay inspections prior to actual delivery and site laying. This is to
ensure that the natural veins of the marble slabs are well matched.
