are not likely to be evident at birth, but may<br />

show up only later in life, from a few months<br />

to decades later (Figures 14 and 15). These<br />

developmental effects emphasize that babies<br />

and children are not just little adults!<br />

Some EDCs produce effects that can cross<br />

generations (transgenerational effects), such<br />

that exposure of a pregnant woman or wild<br />

animal may affect not only the development<br />

of her offspring but also their offspring over<br />

several generations. This means that the increase<br />

in disease rates we are seeing today could in<br />

part be due to exposures of our grandparents<br />

to EDCs, and these effects could increase over<br />

each generation due to both transgenerational<br />

transmission of the altered programming and<br />

continued exposure across generations.<br />
