Overview 

Planning a northern tour can be daunting because of the distances and the unknown. To give your 

group the finest experience available, Tourism Dawson Creek has created this planner to provide 

you with comprehensive information on the city. This will assist you in offering the start of a 

vacation that your clientele will talk about for years! 

Situated in the rolling foothills of northeastern British Columbia, Dawson Creek is distinct. It is 

the only place on the planet that is Mile 0 of the celebrated Alaska Highway. Steeped in a rugged 

pioneer past and legendary World War II history, the city has a historic small town ambience with 

a big city outlook. 

All roads lead to Dawson Creek! At the junction of four well-maintained and paved major highways, 

the city is easily accessible for rubber-tire traffic, has full services and is well positioned for easy 

timing of all your stops northbound.

Also on this site is the Mile Zero Cairn: the spot 

the American Army surveyed as the first (zero) 

mileage post for the Alaska Highway. All mileages 

north on the highway were, and still are measured 

from here! The arch and cairn landmarks were 

erected to celebrate this location and its history. A 

group photo here is a great way to commemorate 

the 1st day of a great adventure. 

• Northern Alberta Railways Park (N.A.R. Park) 

Located 1 block from the city centre and within walking 

distance of major attractions, with a large-vehicle friendly 

parking lot, public washrooms, phones, e-mail access and 2 

gift shops, Northern Alberta Railways Park is the best place 

to start a Dawson Creek visit. Free wireless internet access 

for 2 hours is available in the park through the DC Wireless 

Hot Spot. 

Railway Station Museum and Visitor Centre 

In this complex is the original 1930 railway depot that 

today houses the Visitor Centre, the Railway Museum, 

a northern wildlife display, pioneer memorabilia, 

amazing dinosaur remains and a great souvenir 

gift shop.

Grain Elevator Art Gallery 

Neighbor to the train station museum is a one-of-a kind 

attraction: a 1930 grain elevator renovated to give the 

Art Gallery a home. Historians, artists, architects and 

the casual viewer will be interested in this local icon. 

The gallery offers the amazing talent of local artists, 

handicrafts, a photo gallery of historic Alaska Highway 

photos and the Northern Treasure Gift Shop.

Mile 0 Post 

• Mile ‘0’ Post 

A short block from N.A.R. Park and in the city centre is one 

of British Columbia’s most photographed icons: the Mile ‘0’ 

Post. Erected in 1946 to celebrate the impact that the Alaska 

Highway had on the hamlet of Dawson Creek, this landmark is 

known internationally and is a memorable photo for every 

album. 

• Alaska Highway House ( 1 /2 hour to 1 hour) 

On the SW corner of the Mile 0 Post intersection in the 

centre of town, is Dawson Creek’s newest attraction: Alaska 

Highway House. Your group will be amazed! In the 

computer kiosk, visitors can produce their own video postcard 

and e-mail it to family and friends. 

Available in the film hut is the PBS documentary: The 

Building of the Alaska Highway: original footage and stories 

of the highway workers. Interactive technology, vignettes, 

interpretive panels, artifacts and imaginative displays 

(including a 1942 Willy Jeep) relate the incredible Alaska 

Highway story of yesterday and today! Entrance is by

• Downtown Historic Walking Tour (1 hour) 

Available at the Station Museum, Visitor Centre, Art 

Gallery and Alaska Highway House the complimentary 

copy of this brochure is packed with archival photos, 

interpretations of the city’s mural projects and a narrative 

that corresponds to exterior wall mounted historic photos 

recounting the history behind Dawson Creek. The tour 

has proved very popular and the brochure has become a 

well-liked souvenir. 

• Walter Wright Pioneer Village & Walking Tour 

( 1 /2 - 1 hour) 

At Mile 1 of the Alaska Highway, on the left side north 

bound, Pioneer Village has original Dawson Creek and 

area frontier buildings; historic artifacts, antique vehicles, 

and an exquisite northern horticultural display. 

With plenty of large vehicle parking right at the front 

door, a complimentary walking tour brochure available at 

the desk and entrance by donation, this local attraction 

is a time sensitive and very low cost activity that will 

enhance any day of a tour. Entrance is by donation.

engineering marvel: the Kiskatinaw Bridge.

and is the single remaining bridge on the Alaska Highway

you, and especially for our travel trade partners. Our mission 

with this program is to help you add value to your tour, create
