Books about Papermaking
DER VOLLKOMMNE
PAPIERFÄRBER
The Accomplished Paper
Colorer
translated by Richard J. Wolfe
This new work, limited to 300
copies, is a facsimile reproduction
and translation of an important
early German manual on decorated
and marbled paper. In the historical
introduction to his translation of
this work, Richard J. Wolfe summarizes
the professional literature
on marbling and paper coloring that
began to appear in Germany at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
Der Vollkommne Papierfärber, published around 1823, is the earliest work of
its kind that has survived. Wolfe shares his experience with a seemingly
unique copy of this rare and seminal treatise that he initially encountered
in Leipzig in 1987. The story has a somewhat surprising ending.
Following the introduction, the book displays the facsimile on the left
page and a parallel translation on the opposing page.
Books about Printing & Publishing
PERIODICALS AND
PUBLISHERS
The Newspaper and Journal
Trade, 1740–1914
Part of the Print Network
Series
edited by John Hinks, Catherine
Armstrong, and Matthew Day
This tenth volume contains
eleven exciting chapters from
scholars working on provincial
periodicals and newspapers in
England, Scotland and Ireland.
The topics focus on the book
trades between 1740 and 1914,
and include case studies of
individual publishers and their
experiences in the print market. This volume demonstrates the cultural
and political significance of newspapers and periodicals and their producers.
The main theme emerging from the papers is that of provinciality and
specifically the relationship of producers and consumers of print who live
and work in the provinces to each other and to London. Examination of
the question of provinciality in this volume helps to illuminate the connections
between book trade people in all parts of the British Isles.
