141 - A ROYAL YACHT SQUADRON BROOCH,<br />
first half twentieth century. Enamelled white ensign<br />
measuring 21mm by 17mm with ruby cross and a union<br />
jack in one corner. Attached to a flag pole. ****<br />
* Originally formed as The yacht Club in 1815 the<br />
Prince Regent became a member in 1817 and when he<br />
became King George IV, granted the club official royal<br />
patronage in 1820. Early on the club became associated<br />
with the Royal Navy and Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy<br />
was amongst early honorary Naval members. In 1820,<br />
when the Prince Regent became George IV, the club was<br />
given official royal association and became known as<br />
The Royal yacht Club. The title of Royal Yacht<br />
Squadron was bestowed on the club by King William<br />
IV in 1833. The Admiralty issued a warrant for the use<br />
of what is now the Navy's white ensign in 1859. The<br />
Royal yacht Squadron is still active today. £600 - 800<br />
