I Citizen & Status (Alexandra Eckert)
This section is concerned with the interrelation between citizenship and the individual. Contributions will look beyond the
political and explore how the possession or non-possession of citizenship can affect the – social, economic, cultural, educational –
status of people. And how is, on the other hand, the citizen – citoyen, polites, cives – modelled by social rules and standards?
II Citizen & State (Volker Grieb)
Contributions investigate the interdependence between (concepts of) citizenship and states/governments across different periods
and geographic areas. They will primarily focus on individual political entities. In what ways is citizenship constituent to the
state? In what ways does citizenship imply political participation and access to institutions? Is there a distinction between subjects
and citizens? Is the state conceived as the totality of its citizens? How do different types of states – empires, nation states, city
states – shape citizenship?
III Citizen & Globalisation (Michael Sommer)
Exploring the scope for citizenship in supra- and inter-state environments, the final section opens a universal perspective on
citizenship. How does the concept work at the level of multinational political organisations (such as the EU) or religious
communities with a claim to universalism (such as the Christian church in Late Antiquity)? Is citizenship in an age of increasingly
powerless governments still a viable concept? How can participation be guaranteed when political decision making takes place at
a higher level and becomes more detached from people?
