SOCIAL WORK<br />
The <strong>Social</strong> Work Department was selected to receive<br />
the NASW <strong>Social</strong> Work Day at the Capitol <strong>2010</strong><br />
Advocacy Award in April for their advocacy efforts<br />
at the 2009 <strong>Social</strong> Work Day at the Capitol (SOWK-<br />
DAC) event. The department had 43 students <strong>and</strong> 2<br />
faculty members (David Beimers <strong>and</strong> Nancy<br />
Fitzsimons) participate <strong>and</strong> lobby 45 legislators.<br />
Alyssa Schlager, a MSW c<strong>and</strong>idate <strong>and</strong> student<br />
organizer for the event, will accept the award on the<br />
behalf <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Social</strong> Work Department.<br />
Marilyn Frank presented, “Tibetan beliefs <strong>and</strong><br />
practices around dying,” at the Gerontological<br />
Society <strong>of</strong> America Meeting, November 21, Atlanta,<br />
GA.<br />
Marilyn Frank had a photo accepted for the<br />
Southern Minnesota Poet Society “Image <strong>and</strong> the<br />
Word” contest. Poets will write a poem to<br />
accompany the photos selected for display at the<br />
Amy Frentz Art Gallery in Mankato, MN. The<br />
opening reception is <strong>February</strong> 18.<br />
Paul Mackie’s presentation, “A study <strong>of</strong> hiring <strong>and</strong><br />
retaining social service staff across rural Minnesota:<br />
Supervisors speak out”, was accepted for<br />
presentation at the National Association for Rural<br />
Mental Health Conference, June 2-5, Denver, CO.<br />
SOCIOLOGY & CORRECTIONS<br />
Donald Ebel presented, "Religion <strong>and</strong> attitudes<br />
toward work among 51-61 year old men: Retesting<br />
Lenski at the close <strong>of</strong> the twentieth century,"<br />
at the Society for the Scientific Study <strong>of</strong> Religion<br />
Meeting, October 23, Denver, Colorado.<br />
Leah Rogne (with C.L. Estes, B.R. Grossman, B.A.<br />
Hollister, & E. Solway) edited the book, <strong>Social</strong><br />
Insurance <strong>and</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Justice: <strong>Social</strong> Security,<br />
Medicare, <strong>and</strong> the Attack Against Entitlements. In<br />
this book, Dr. Rogne wrote three chapters in this<br />
book: “Teaching social insurance: Critical pedagogy<br />
<strong>and</strong> social justice,” <strong>and</strong> “We’re all in this together,”<br />
<strong>and</strong> “One nation, interdependent: Exploring the<br />
boundaries <strong>of</strong> citizenship in the history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong><br />
Security <strong>and</strong> Medicare.”<br />
URBAN & REGIONAL STUDIES<br />
Janet Cherrington-Cucore has been re-appointed to<br />
serve on the Economic Development Authority <strong>and</strong><br />
Planning Commission for the City <strong>of</strong> Janesville.<br />
Anthony Filipovitch published three entries entitled<br />
“Clevel<strong>and</strong> Foundation,” “Corporate <strong>Social</strong><br />
Responsibility” <strong>and</strong> “W.K. Kellogg Foundation” in<br />
the International Encyclopedia <strong>of</strong> Civil Society.<br />
Miriam Porter published the report, "Urban<br />
management programme: Curriculum for developing<br />
countries," for Kwame Nkrumah University <strong>of</strong><br />
Science <strong>and</strong> Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.<br />
<strong>College</strong> <strong>and</strong> Related Activities<br />
TEACHING SCHOLAR FELLOWSHIPS<br />
Three SBS faculty were awarded Teaching Scholar<br />
Fellowships for Summer <strong>2010</strong>. The honored<br />
faculty <strong>and</strong> their project titles are listed below:<br />
Andi Lassiter (Psychology) – “Exploring the<br />
history <strong>of</strong> psychology in south central Minnesota.”<br />
Emily Stark (Psychology) – “Critical thinking after<br />
college: Applying research design knowledge to<br />
everyday decisions.”<br />
Jocelyn Stitt (Gender & Women Studies) –<br />
“Reading autobiographies for cross-cultural<br />
competency.”<br />
