COME ON SPRING!
The weather last week was quite
a tease wasn’t it? It was so good
to see the sunshine and the kids
being able to go outside for recess
(for one day). I’m holding onto
the belief that since winter came a
month early that spring will be
here early too.
With spring comes a lot of
planning for the rest of the year as
well as next year. The teachers
have just completed class data
reports for me which let me know
where each and every student is
academically. We are using this
information to guide our instruction
with your student for the rest
of the year, ensuring that each and
every student makes the academic
growth that we expect.
Third through fifth grade students
have been taking practice
B u c k e y e V a l l e y E a s t
E l e m e n t a r y
Ohio Achievement tests (we like
to call them scrimmage tests).
The teachers are also using this
piece of data to decide where we
go next with our instruction.
If you are the parent of a
third, fourth or fifth grade student
please mark the test dates
on your calendar now. The
Reading Achievement test will
be on Tuesday, April 26 th , the
Math Achievement test will be
Thursday, April 28 th , and the
fifth grade Science Achievement
test will be Tuesday, May 3 rd .
Please try to arrange any appointments
around these dates.
We find that the students perform
so much better on the assessments
when they are here to
take it with the rest of their
class.
I will again be conducting
individual goal-setting confer-
ences with each third through
fifth grade student. Together
we will be reflecting on their
past performance on the OAA
tests and setting goals together
for this year’s tests. I treasure
this time to meet with each student.
It’s a great opportunity for
me to give them a pat on the
back for their efforts!!
We look forward to seeing
everyone at Parent/Teacher conferences
on March 3 rd and 8 th as
well as at the fabulous PTO
Carnival on the 18 th !!
Keep practicing those math
facts at home and, as always,
READ, READ, READ with
your child.
Spring has to be coming
SOON!!!!
place Tuesday, June 7. We will
need lots of volunteers. Look for
Mrs. Bindel’s second grade class had
the privilege of having Mr. Tyler Meier
come in and teach Writer's Workshop!
He had the kids start off with some free
writing and then had them use their "idea
machines" to write a poem of their own
based on ideas he shared with them. The
poem he shared was the following by
W.B. Yeats:
HAD I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under
your feet;
Tread softly because you tread
on my dreams.
W.B. Yeats (1865–1939)
"He Wishes For the Cloths of Heaven"
from the Collected Works of W.B. Yeats
We are now in the process of a poetry
journey. We're been
studying different forms
of poetry. So far we've
done cinquain, free
verse and haiku. Et to
come are limericks,
shape poems and others!
Mr. Meier works
for The Kenyon Review
and is a poet himself.

The ESC Preschool has been studying
fish and animals that live in and around
the water. However, we took a brief
break from this project to celebrate Chinese
New Year. In the picture, Mrs. Terry
shows everyone how to use chopsticks
to eat Chinese food and we made
Hong Bao, special envelopes for good
MUSIC HAPPENINGS
The second and first graders are working
on music for their program about recycling
called, "It's Easy Being Green." The
kindergartners are also working on songs
about recycling.
The Introduction to Band Class has
been learning more notes and songs and
will also be performing on the March program.
The third graders are learning to play
piano! Our school has enough small,
battery-operated keyboards for a classful
of students, and every year the third graders
have an introduction to the piano unit.
They are doing very well so far!
During January and February, the
fourth and fifth graders have sung America's
patriotic songs. The fifth graders have
even learned American Sign Language for
the "Star-Spangled Banner" and "God
Bless America." In honor of Presidents'
Day, they also sang the song, "Learning
the Presidents," which lists all of the presidents
from Washington through Obama in
chronological order, and "Fifty Nifty Unit-
