A Report to Our Supporters
Fiscal Year 2009
July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009

“If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
Sir Isaac Newton
At the Wisconsin Historical Foundation, we have seen further this past year than ever before and we have you to thank for it.
By standing on your shoulders of support, we can see the immediate impact that you have created and a bright future for the
Wisconsin Historical Society.
I am privileged to be the Foundation’s President at a moment of significant opportunity. We have begun to chart our course with an
ambitious strategic plan that will, with your help, ensure that the Foundation is properly positioned to meet the Society’s future needs.
Like many other major historical institutions across the nation, the Society relies on funding from both public and private sources.
In addition to the strong support the Society continues to receive from state government, it also increasingly takes generous
contributions to the Foundation, from people like you and me, to ensure that our history is passed on to the next generation.
That’s why we are delighted to share this report of the notable accomplishments and exciting news that your support has helped
make possible. We hope you take pride in the results of your commitment to collecting, preserving and sharing the stories of
Wisconsin and the nation.
As President, I’ve had the unique opportunity to see firsthand how the Foundation’s volunteers and staff strive daily to adhere
to the highest ethical and philanthropic practices. They strictly manage each gift made in support of the Wisconsin Historical
Society based on the intent of each supporter. As a result, I’m also very pleased to let you know that the Foundation has received
Charity Navigator’s coveted four-star rating and has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau.
As the coming year unfolds, we will share more details on our direction and priorities with you, but one thing is clear: without
your support and dedication, we could not attempt the first steps of this ambitious journey. Standing on your strong shoulders, I
can see an exciting new year ahead of us filled with many more noteworthy achievements.
With heartfelt thanks,
Dennis R. Dorn
The Year in Review
What You Helped Make Possible…
Wisconsin Historical
Foundation 2008-2009
Fundraising Results
The mission of the Wisconsin Historical
Foundation is to strengthen the Wisconsin
Historical Society’s ability to fulfill its public
mandate and mission to help people connect
to the past. Between July 1, 2008, and June
30, 2009, the Foundation raised $4,323,912
in support of the Society. During that time,
the Foundation championed the Society as
an indispensable and irreplaceable source
for history in Wisconsin by increasing
awareness, engaging with audiences, fostering
philanthropic relationships, and seeking
resources and solutions.
Textbook Adopted by
Schools Across the State
A total of 105 school districts in Wisconsin
have either adopted or are piloting Wisconsin:
Our State, Our Story, the definitive textbook
on Wisconsin history published by the
Wisconsin Historical Society Press. Schools
include the state’s largest districts, including
Milwaukee, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Janesville,
Fond du Lac and Madison, as well as many
rural communities. This full-color, inquirydriven
book for Wisconsin fourth-graders
uses a groundbreaking new model for history
education that teaches kids to use critical
thinking skills as they “think like a historian.”
The Wisconsin Historical Foundation secured
$285,000 in seed funding to help bring this
project to life.
Museum’s “Odd Wisconsin”
Exhibit Draws Huge Crowds
“Odd Wisconsin” debuted at the Wisconsin
Historical Museum in October, and it
is perhaps our most unique exhibit yet.
Featuring an exclusive collection of curious
and authentic artifacts, “Odd Wisconsin”
shares the unexpected stories of the people,
places and things that make our state uniquely
“Wisconsin.” For the first time, the Society
asked nearly 900 people to provide feedback
on potential exhibit ideas. The result is the
creation of an exhibit that really connects
with visitors, and has enabled the Museum to
grow attendance by more than 14% during
a tumultuous economy. Donations totaling
$30,000 from generous people like you allowed
the Museum to create this popular exhibit.

“Without the Wisconsin
would have been
lost forever.”
Exciting Initiatives at
Wisconsin Historic Sites
Wisconsin Historic Sites, like Old World
Wisconsin, launched new websites and
electronic newsletters that are helpful, timely
and engaging. In addition, more than 14,700
visitors toured the sites (not including Circus
World) during a very special promotion called
“Free Mondays in June” in 2009. Wade House
electrified the vertical “muley saw” at the
Herrling Sawmill so low millpond water levels
no longer preclude its operation by waterpower,
and a newly restored caboose and boxcar are
now on display at Stonefield. The Wisconsin
Historical Foundation raised $731,645 during
the fiscal year to help preserve the unique
experiences provided by the Society’s historic
sites and museums.
Society’s Grand Library Reading
Room Renovation Underway
Significant progress has been made this year in
preparing for the renovation of the Society’s
grand Library Reading Room. The intent is
to enable modern library researchers to use
21st-century tools and methods while
maintaining the aesthetic delights and evocative
power of the original surroundings. All library
services and collections are available, however,
and will continue to operate until the project’s
scheduled completion in 2010. The state of
Wisconsin has committed $2.1 million in
funding, but it is anticipated that an additional
$150,000 of private support will be required to
fully equip and furnish the space.

Society Press Publishes
Several Award-Winning
and Popular Books
The Wisconsin Historical Society Press
developed and published a variety of books that
appealed to both critics and readers alike. A few
of the especially notable publications included:
• Old Farm: a History by Jerry Apps, winner of
the Ellis/Henderson Outdoor Writing Award
• Fill ‘er Up: The Glory Days of Wisconsin Gas
Stations by Jim Draeger and Mark Speltz,
Finalist for Foreword Magazine’s Book of
the Year: Travel Guide Book
• Encore! The Renaissance of Wisconsin
Opera Houses by Brian Leahy Doyle with
Photographs by Mark Fay
• And two new additions to the Badger
Biographies Series for Young Readers: Dr.
Kate: Angel on Snowshoes by Rebecca
Wojahn and Ole Evinrude and His Outboard
Motor by Bob Jacobson
The Wisconsin Historical Foundation
raised $68,542 from supporters who value
publications like these and want to ensure
they not only remain in print, but reach a
wide audience.
National History Day in
Wisconsin Continues
Record Growth
As the state coordinator for this exciting
academic enrichment program, the Society
helps students in grades 6-12 learn about
historical issues, ideas, people, and events and
develop critical skills for the future. This year,
participants collected and evaluated research
related to the theme The Individual in History:
Actions and Legacies. They presented what they
learned via imaginative exhibits, original
performances, informative documentaries
and historical research papers in competitions
throughout the year. Fifty of Wisconsin’s best
and brightest middle- and high-school history
students emerged from a field of more than
9,000 students (another record!), and 109
schools statewide took part in the national
finals of National History Day in College Park,
Maryland in June. In addition to continued
state funding, nearly $40,000 in private
donations were raised this year to support the
teachers and students who participate in this
invaluable enrichment program.
Partnership Grows with
Wisconsin Public Television
The Society continued its fruitful collaboration
with Wisconsin Public Television (WPT),
working on the production of Wisconsin Hometown
Stories: Manitowoc-Two Rivers in the spring of
2009. (The program premiered on WPT on
July 6, 2009). This is the fourth in the series that
shares Wisconsin’s history one town at a time
(Janesville, Green Bay and La Crosse were the
first three). Stories
are being collected
now for Wisconsin
Vietnam War Stories,
a documentary to
be aired in 2010
on WPT, that
will coincide with
the release of a
companion book published by the Wisconsin
Historical Society Press. Both will look at the
experiences and impact of the Vietnam War
on Wisconsin soldiers and civilians through the
voices and stories of those who lived through it.
The Wisconsin Historical Foundation and WPT
have raised $677,500 in private support
to underwrite these very important projects,
but more than $500,000 is still needed.

Five Wisconsin History Makers
Honored at Gala
The Society saluted the lifetime achievements
of five distinguished individuals with Wisconsin
ties during the Fourth Annual Wisconsin
History Makers Gala. The 2009 class included
(pictured above left to right):
• Madison philanthropists Pleasant Rowland
Frautschi and W. Jerome “Jerry” Frautschi.
• University of Wisconsin-Madison
Professor of Bass, Jazz History and
Combo Improvisation, Richard Davis
• Stephen H. Marcus, chairman of the
board of The Marcus Corporation,
based in Milwaukee
• Harry C. “Buddy” Melges, chairman of
Melges Boat Works, based in Zenda
Mary Buestrin of Mequon and Murph Burke
of Fox Point continued as co-chairs. This
event raised $60,625 to support the Wisconsin
Historical Society. Be sure to save the date for
our next gala on May 26, 2010, in Milwaukee.
New Preservation Storage
Facility Moves Closer to Reality
This past year saw continued progress toward
construction of an off-site preservation storage
facility in Madison. In the past four years,
two state budget bills provided $25 million
for construction of a facility that would house
collections held by both the Society and the
Wisconsin Veterans Museum and $3.25 million
for shelving in the facility for use by the Society.
The facility would allow the Society to move its
vast museum artifact collections from cramped
quarters in the Society’s headquarters building
to a new, modern facility, and possibly as much
as half of its library and archival collections.
Staff is currently in the process of preparing
for the move.
Several Notable Additions
to the Society’s Collections
New acquisitions to the Society’s vast and rich
historical collections are critical in helping us
continue to share the broad and unfolding
story of our state and nation. The Society
received several important items this past
year, including:
• a quartermaster’s ledger from Fort
Winnebago (near modern-day Portage)
• a collection of African-American seamstress
and bowler Earlene Fuller’s bowling
garments, trophies, and memorabilia
• the papers of world-renowned naturalist and
author Sigurd Olson and his wife Elizabeth
• the personal papers and photographs of
Milwaukee writer, photographer, diarist and
humanitarian Harold Gauer
• a rare collection of carte-de-visite studio
portraits of leaders and members of the
Ho-Chunk Nation taken by photographer
James F. Bodtker in 1867.
Over the course of the year, the Wisconsin
Historical Foundation secured nearly $235,000
in donations for the acquisition, preservation
and sharing of items like these.

Society Hosts Largest
Local History and Historic
Preservation Conference
More than 200 people representing 52
counties came to Madison for “Building
on the Basics”, the 2008 Local History and
Historic Preservation Conference. The largest
local history and preservation conference
ever put on by the Society, the two-day event
featured 27 sessions, a dozen roundtables, two
luncheon speakers and a tour of the revitalized
community of Mazomanie, all designed to
help local historical organizations and
preservation advocates with some of their
most pressing issues.
Exhibit Celebrates McCormick’s
200th Birthday
February 15th, 2009, marked the 200th
birthday of Cyrus Hall McCormick, the
inventor of the world’s first successful
mechanical reaper and the founder of the
McCormick Harvesting Machine Company,
(which ultimately became International
Harvester, an enormous agricultural equipment
company). To celebrate, an exhibit honoring
his life and accomplishments was on display in
May at Society headquarters. The papers of
Cyrus McCormick and his family, as well as the
records of the companies he founded are all
held in the Society collections. It includes more
than 12 million documents and nearly a half
million photographs, dating from 1800 to 1985.
The Wisconsin Historical Foundation secured
$83,280 in order to underwrite the annual
costs associated with preserving and making
available this important collection.
“The Wisconsin Historical
