INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVES
Industry Experts Predict Trends for 2007
The Globe asked several leading public
assembly industry experts for their
New Year predictions that will set the
course for the industry in 2007.
Ed Snider, Comcast-
Spectacor Chairman:
“While the modern fan craves
for instant fan gratification
with highlight clips and stats
direct to cell phones, I soon
see our fans watching our
games live on their cell phones and personal
electronic devices.”
Peter Luukko, Comcast-Spectacor
President and Global Spectrum
Chairman: “Customers attending events
at arenas will be able to “test
drive” new products by using
interactive kiosks located on
concourses. This new sales
and marketing opportunity
will give current and new
sponsors and other businesses
exposure to a highly qualified
and motivated audience. I also feel that
facility operators in the public assembly
industry will begin to focus more on festivals,
where the event itself is the event. There will
also be a new marketing focus on qualified
data collection and direct marketing
telephonically through cell phones, e-mails
and other new communications technology.”
Fred Maglione, New
Era Tickets President:
“Our experience during the
past year indicates that venue
operators are looking to give
their guests and fans easier
and more convenient methods
of enhancing their spectator
experience at an event. In the coming year, we
will see an increase in the use of smart tickets
that, in addition to providing admission, will
have added value for the customer and will
be used instead of cash to buy concessions
and merchandise.”
John Page, Global Spectrum Chief
Operating Officer: “This year should see
additional reality based TV
shows evolve into touring
shows. The success of
Dancing with Stars and
American Idol, for example,
should provide the impetus
for other shows to begin
touring. Also, keep an eye out
for other TV properties that can be translated
and created into live participatory events to
find their way into arenas as a new element
of the family show business.”
Frank E. Russo, Jr., Global
Spectrum Senior Vice President:
“Governments will be more
apt to utilize the services of
private management companies,
but an important consideration
in their decisions will
be the capping of manageable
taxpayer financial obligations.
In addition, governments will
demand more verifiable evidence of economic
impact, both direct and indirect. I definitely
see an increase in the demand by the public
to see events live and in person. This interest
will be fueled in part by the success of TV
programs that have mass public appeal.”
Richard H. Sherwood,
Front Row Marketing
Services President:
“This should be an interesting
year as naming rights continue
a ‘trickle down’ effect
that expands opportunities
for naming rights at smaller facilities, like
performing arts centers, theatres, etc.
More non-traditional venues and entities,
like museums, hospitals, highways and
municipalities, will look to advertising and
naming rights to secure new incremental
revenue. Premium Seating sales at arenas
and stadiums will continue to be a challenge,
as venues need to be more creative in
identifying new seating sources, solutions
and client interactions.”
Ken Young, Ovations Food Services
President: “We will see less consumers
jumping on fad diets and
creating their own balanced
nutritional plans that fit their
lifestyle. We will also see more
all-inclusive packages in the
premium areas showing
greater value to club seat and
suite users.”
Mich Sauers, Comcast-
Spectacor Senior Vice
President, Business
Development: “I see
trends that indicate an acceleration
in the globalization of
American sports. I think a
greater number of professional
teams from all sports will initially schedule
more preseason games outside of the United
States, with Europe and Asia as the primary
sites. In the not so distant future, we may see
this at the collegiate level.”
Tom Mobley, Global
Spectrum Senior Vice
President, Convention
Centers: “Conventions and
trade shows will continue to
grow in number, size (both
attendance and square
footage), and importance,
reinforced by the human need for face-to-face
communication. Technology will take on an
even more important role in expanding the
experiential aspects of events. Thus technology,
rather than weakening conventions and
trade shows, will in fact greatly enhance their
value and effectiveness. Paperless conventions
will soon become the norm rather than
experimental. The exhibit booth will become
a ‘command center’ tied by technology into a
worldwide network of marketing support
resources that will even more effectively
showcase products on the exhibition floor.”
Ovations Right Choice For Wright State As Nutter
Center’s New Concessionaire
Wright State University in Dayton, OH, named Ovations
Food Services as the new food and beverage
concessionaire for the Nutter Center, its 12,500-seat
multipurpose entertainment and sports venue on
campus and the home of Wright State University athletics
and the Dayton Bombers of the ECHL.
“Ovations Food Services has an outstanding reputation for
providing top-quality food and beverage service to its customers
throughout the United States,” said Wright State University’s Executive
Director of the Nutter Center John Siehl. “What impresses us most
about Ovations is their high level
of energy and passion for our customers.
Our fans and customers
will truly enjoy their dining experience
whether they are ordering
food at one of our many concession stands or feasting in one of our
luxury suites. We know Ovations Food Services will wow our guests!”
This has been a big year for Ovations Food Services, which recently
was awarded contracts at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, FL; Hohokam
Stadium in Mesa, CA; and the Nashville Convention Center in
Nashville, TN.
“We are very excited to be working with Wright State University,” said
Ovations Food Services President Ken Young. “Our primary focus in
Dayton is to ‘cater’ to our customers’ needs and wants and help
provide them with a total entertainment experience each and every
time they visit with us.”
“We pride ourselves on our unsurpassed quality of
customer service. This is a tremendous opportunity for us
to expand our business into Ohio and further grow
Ovations Food Services,” added Young.
The Nutter Center can accommodate up to 12,500 guests
No More Ho-Hum Concessions At Mesa’s Hohokam
Stadium, Spring Home of Chicago Cubs
After recently taking over concession food and beverage operations
at Hohokam Stadium, spring training site of the Chicago
Cubs in Mesa, AZ, Comcast-Spectacor’s Ovations
Food Services is transforming basic hot dog and
pretzel concession stands to branded concepts,
such as Hot Dog Nation, Black Angus and Salt
River Cantina.
“We will be activating space and ideas of service never before seen
in the 10-year history of this stadium,” said Mike Doocy, who is
overseeing the transformation at the stadium for Ovations. “We view
this project as it is: The home away from home of the Chicago Cubs.
We may not have the size of a MLB ballpark, but there is no doubt that
this is the ‘big leagues’ here in Mesa.”
“Our concepts will revolve around the idea of fresh service. Every
improvement to the venue and every equipment purchase has been
thoughtfully determined to create a preparation system to provide the
freshest service of food for fans who will join us this spring.”
“We will adding more staff to handle the anticipated increase in customer
purchases. More personnel will also result in quicker
service, which always is appreciated by baseball
fans,” said Doocy.
“While we’re new at this facility, people I have met
with are pleased and amazed by our ideas and
drive; and we haven't even sold a dog, yet! The City
of Mesa has never seen concessions and food service
quite like this, and we will be prepared when the best team in the
National League comes to Mesa to get ready for the 2007 baseball
season,” Doocy added.
In addition to Hohokam Stadium, Ovations is also making
preparations for concession sales at the Mesa Convention Center and
the Mesa Amphitheater. The amphitheater holds about 5,000 and has
about 20 shows a year. The convention center offers 19,000 sq. ft. of
exhibit space and 19,000 additional square feet in meeting rooms and
banquet facilities.
“This is an exciting time for Ovations Food Services in Mesa,” Doocy
said.

Ticket Marketplace Auctions Add Value
For New Era Clients
Three Global Spectrum-managed facilities
recently launched Ticket Marketplace
(TMP), the New Era Tickets auction product.
TMP enables venues to sell premium inventory,
auction off packages and give their
patrons a safe environment in which to resell
tickets. For example the Rose Quarter,
Wachovia Complex and the Colonial Center
all decided to set aside premium seats in
order to drive incremental revenue through
auctions for High School Musical.
It is also a great way for season ticket holders
to resell unused tickets, offsetting their initial
investment. Using TMP eliminates the need to
off-load tickets to brokers and allows season
ticket holders to post tickets and find a buyer
through the facilities own venue-sanctioned
site. For the venue, it reduces no shows at
events, thus driving revenue from concessions
New Era Tickets, the
full-service ticketing
subsidiary of Comcast-
said New Era Tickets President Fred
and merchandise. Also, by controlling the
resale market for tickets, venues capture
additional transaction fees and revenue, and
at the same time acquire new customers for
sales teams to target as season ticket holders!
Whether venues use the product to
sell premium inventory, auction off
packages or give their patrons a
safe environment to resell tickets,
benefits exist for all parties
involved. Buyers gain access to the
best seats, or to events that were
previously sold out, sellers off-load
tickets in a safe environment and
possibly earn credit for future
purchases, and the venue brings
home additional revenue all while
filling seats and gaining a broader
customer base.
Front Row Brings First Data & Visa
To Champ Car Races
Front Row Marketing Services has initiated
and completed a spectacular technologyoriented
entitlement sponsorship deal for
First Data and VISA with major Champ Car
Race events in Las Vegas and Phoenix this year.
The Vegas Grand Prix (April 5-8) and Grand
Prix Arizona (November 29-December 2),
both inaugural events on the 2007 Champ
Car Series schedule, will feature VISA in the
title of the race. Front Row has been working
with DDB Ventures (the ownership group of
both Grand Prix races) since August, acting as
the sponsorship and hospitality sales team
under the direction of Rob Armbruster, Front
Row’s Director of Project Management.
“The Vegas Grand Prix Fueled by Visa and our
Grand Prix Arizona are about innovation, and
First Data will be providing ticketing technology
through New Era Tickets that is a first in
this type of sporting event,” said Dale Jensen,
a partner with Brad Yonover in DDB Ventures.
“We’ll now be wireless on all on-site transactions,
from tickets to T-shirt purchases,
throughout the weekends of the events.
"We were extremely impressed with Front Row
Marketing Services’ ability to create a terrific
Vegas Grand Prix owners Brad Yonover and Dale Jensen flank First Data’s Richard Rameriz as they welcome Champ Car
Drivers Alex Figge and Ryan Dalziel to the announcement of the Vegas Grand Prix Fueled by Visa.
HOW TO REACH KEY PERSONNEL
partnership with First Data, VISA and our Las
Vegas and Phoenix races.”
First Data and VISA will be providing a “cash
less” vendor program for both events, which
will include ticketing, merchandise and
concessions. VISA will have extensive signage
on each track and throughout both cities (Las
Vegas and Phoenix), while also receiving
first-class hospitality and a number of TV spots
during the NBC-TV broadcasts of both events.
In addition to Front
Row’s involvement with
the two races, New Era
Tickets, the full-service
ticketing subsidiary
of Front Row parent
company Comcast-
Spectacor has signed on
as the official ticketing
company for the Vegas
Grand Prix. New Era and
First Data will be working together
to create a one-of-a-kind ticketing
program, where actual VISA Points
Cards will act as tickets while also
serving as a means for concession
and souvenir purchases.
“First Data and VISA were looking for
a unique platform to showcase their
wireless credit card processing
technologies, and racing seemed
the perfect fit,” said Armbruster.
“We were able to build a program
that provided First Data and VISA
with the opportunity they sought,
while also showing them an immediate
return on their investment.”
The contract with First Data will run
through 2009, with an option for a
two-year contract extension.
The Bank United Center is a very nice
