NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY 

INDUCTS 70 NEW MEMBERS! 

These new members join 51 current members 

The St. Vincent-St. Mary High School chapter of the National Honor 

Society inducted 70 new members on Monday, November 19, 2012. 

A faculty council selected these students based on their accumulative 

point averages (a minimum 3.5) and faculty evaluations of their 

character, leadership, and service to the school and community. 

These new members joined the 51 current members. Chapter offi cers 

including President Bennett Nelson, Vice-president Gregory Rybka, 

Secretary Thomas Paolucci, and Treasurer Meredith Cabe conducted 

the traditional candle lighting ceremony that emphasized the ideals of 

NHS. Our guest speaker for the Induction Ceremony was Mr. Aaron 

Brown, member of the St. Vincent-St. Mary Class of 1997, and a 

senior vice-president at Fahlgren Mortine, one of the nation’s largest 

independent marketing and communications agencies headquartered 

in Columbus, Ohio. Parents’ Club provides the funds for the pins that 

new members received from Headmaster David Rathz. Following the 

induction ceremony, the veteran members hosted a reception for the 

new inductees and their families. The chapter advisor is Ms. Pam 

Godshalk. 

New members inducted include seniors Abrar Alniemi, Ryan 

Bennett, Mary Bozsik, Corey Bryant, Madeline Garritano, Maria 

Locastro, Alexandra Matejczyk, Max Morganti, Jordan Priddy,

National Honor Society would also like to thank the STVM community 

for their support of the annual “Books for the Bahamas” children’s book 

drive. Over 3,000 books and $1050 was donated through the homeroom 

competition. The books and funds will help stock elementary school 

libraries in impoverished areas of the Bahamas. 

Y-LEAD BOARD COMPLETES 

SERVICE PROJECT 

The Y-LEAD (Youth Leadership Education and Development) Board is a 

group of nine teen volunteers from Summa Health System, responsible 

for creating service projects to benefi t Summa Health System and/or 

the Greater Akron Community. These nine teen volunteers represent 

an array of local schools, including junior Julia Mendiola from STVM. 

This year the group collected over 500 books for First Book Greater 

Akron, a non-profi t organization determined to see that all children, 

regardless of their economic conditions, achieve more in school and 

in life through access to an ongoing supply of new books. Thank you, 

Y-LEAD, and congratulations, Julia! 

“MASS WEDNESDAY” 

BEGINS DECEMBER 5 

We are very excited to announce a change happening at STVM 

that will allow us to improve the quality of the education received here 

and provide our students with the experience of the Eucharist on a 

more regular basis. The Catholic Catechism states, “The Eucharist 

is the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments 

are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the 

blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, 

namely Christ himself.” Therefore, it is our obligation as the people 

of God to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist as often as 

we can. It is also important that this be exemplifi ed throughout our 

school and, most especially, in our school schedule. This is the perfect 

reflection of our Catholic identity. At the same time, one of the desires 

coming from our faculty has been to have the opportunity to meet with 

each of their students individually throughout the academic year. This 

will help them provide more personalized instruction and direction to 

our students. 

We are implementing a new plan to help us with both of these goals! 

Beginning on December 5, 2012, each Wednesday will be designated as 

“Mass Wednesday”. We will be on a Mass schedule each Wednesday 

for the remainder of this academic year. Two grade levels (9 and 10, 

11 and 12) will attend mass every other week at St. Vincent Church. 

On the Wednesdays that a particular grade level will not be attending 

Mass, they will use that “Mass Period” as a special study period, 

rotating through periods 1 through 8, during which time teachers can 

meet individually with their students. Students not meeting individually 

with their teachers can use that period for silent study time. 

With this new implementation, our students will have the opportunity 

to experience the Eucharist every other week and receive personalized 

attention and direction from each of their teachers! It’s a “win – win” 

situation for everyone! 

ST. VINCENT- ST. MARY HIGH 

SCHOOL LOCAL SCIENCE DAY 

SET FOR FEBRUARY 12 

The Ohio Academy of Science and St. Vincent-St. Mary High School 

are announcing that the STVM local science fair will be held on Tuesday, 

February 12, 2013. Participating students from all science courses and 

levels will be showcasing their Science Inquiry Projects at the fair. 

Judging of the projects will take place at the STVM Cosgrove Center 

from 4 - 6 p.m. The projects may be viewed by the public from 3 - 4 p.m. 

and from 6 - 7 p.m. Project boards earning a superior rating will also be 

displayed in the LRC on February 13, 2013. The awards ceremony will 

be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Cosgrove Center on the day of the fair. 

Projects will be represented in the following categories: Biology, 

Chemistry, Earth Science and Physical Science. All projects will be 

judged and awards will be given to the top inquiry projects in each 

category. Superior rated students from the STVM local science fair will 

attend the 65th Western Reserve District 5 Science Day at The University 

of Akron on Saturday, March 16, 2013, an event also sponsored by 

The Ohio Academy of Science. Selected student projects will also be 

entered into the Intel Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair to 

be held March 4-7, 2013 at Cleveland State University and the ABIA 

Best Medicine Fair Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the National Inventors’ 

Hall of Fame® School in Akron, Ohio.

PARENT SURVEY IN JANUARY 

St. Vincent-St. Mary is very proud to be accredited by both the 

Ohio Catholic School Accrediting Association and the North Central 

Association of Schools. To merit accreditation, member schools must 

be engaged in continuous improvement. During a six-year cyclical 

process, accredited schools profi le their students and community, 

identify areas needing improvement, set specifi c goals, and work 

toward enhanced student performance in the targeted areas. 

We are currently midway through the six-year cycle. Our two target 

goals are the following: 

1) Catholic Identity Goal: Students will demonstrate their 

understanding of Catholic morals and values in building a faith 

community of respect for themselves, others, and the campus 

environment. 

2) Academic Goal: Students will learn and apply study skill 

techniques across the curriculum to improve academic 

performance. 

One very important component of our process is surveying our 

community: students, parents, and faculty. The surveys help us track 

progress on our goals and also provide demographic and evaluative 

data needed to update our student and community profi le and identify 

areas of strength and areas that need improvement. 

Consequently, we will be conducting a parent survey in early January. 

The survey will be electronic and will be available through online links. 

It will have 3 parts, each with its own link: 1) Catholic Identity - Defi ning 

Characteristics; 2) Catholic Identity - Program Effectiveness; 3) Parent 

Survey. During the week of January 6, 2013 you will receive an email 

that will explain how to access the survey, which should only take 

approximately 20 minutes to complete. It will be accessible through 

January 25, 2013. The responses that you provide will be totally 

confidential. The school will only see the information after it has been 

analyzed. We appreciate your time and efforts to make STVM a school 

of excellence. 

IMPORTANT 2012-2013 DATES FOR 

ADMISSIONS 

Irish Academic Scholarship winners will be hosted at our annual 

Scholarship Dinner on Monday, December 10, 2012 in the STVM 

Student Center. This event will honor the recipients of our Irish 

Academic Scholarships, which are awarded to the top scorers on 

our fall scholarship/placement test. These eighth graders and their 

parents are treated to a well-deserved formal evening of dining and 

congratulations. STVM President, Thomas M. Carone, Headmaster 

David Rathz and Admissions Director Joanne Wiseman will present 

the program for the evening. Our Academic Scholarship recipients for 

the Class of 2017 are: Kevin Feezel, William Schell, and Abigail

Eighth Grade applications will be distributed by Catholic elementary 

schools on Monday, January 14, 2013 and “High School Selection 

Week” will take place January 14-18, 2013. The deadline for eighth 

graders in Catholic schools to select their high school is Friday, January 

18, and the applications will be sent to their fi rst-choice schools during 

the week of January 21, 2013. STVM will mail letters of acceptance 

on Thursday, February 14, 2013.

NOTEWORTHY NOTES 

‘TIS THE SEASON! 

The annual STVM Christmas Choir Concert will take place on 

Tuesday, December 4, at 7 p.m. This concert will feature all members of 

our 6 choirs—Liturgical Choir, Concert Choir, Symphonic Choir, Women’s 

and Men’s Ensembles, and Show Choir. No tickets are needed, but 

donations will be accepted at the door. Please plan to attend and get 

into the holiday spirit with beautiful music from our choirs! 

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL MOTHERS’ NIGHT OUT! 

Our annual Mothers’ Night Out, sponsored by Parents’ Club and 

chaired by Jerry Kelly, was another big success. Approximately 115 

moms, grandmothers and alumni enjoyed a wonderful evening with a 

great crowd, great food, great prizes, great fun, and great camaraderie! 

Fourteen vendors were present, displaying their “wares” – including 

nail polishing and hand massages, chair massages, jewelry, cosmetics, 

candles, spices and mixes, serving pieces, purses, baskets, “corn 

cozies”, and more! 

Once again, thanks to Fr. Berardi V51 for his gifts to all who were 

present. Everyone enjoyed the same location – St. George’s Fellowship 

Hall – and many commented that they hope next year’s event will 

continue to be held at the same place. As the evening was ending, many 

favorable comments were heard including one mom who said, “I had a 

ball…I’ll defi nitely be back next year!” 

The next Parents’ Club activity is the annual “Faculty/Staff Appreciation” 

in December. Thank you for your support!

COLLEGE TIMELINE FOR SENIORS 

December 

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! It is now time for you to fill 

out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The form 

is online and may be submitted after January 1. You cannot submit 

it any earlier, but the sooner it is done, the less headache it will be 

for you and your parents later. You might be receiving a reply if you 

applied early to colleges. If you are accepted, you may need to send 

a deposit and withdrawal application for other colleges. If you are 

“deferred” that means there is still hope and a decision has not yet 

been made on your application. You might have to enroll at a regional 

campus of your selected school and apply to the main campus again 

after a semester or two. It does not hurt to call or write to someone 

in admissions. Denied admission? Do not lose heart. This does not 

mean you are not smart or worthy. You should have other schools on 

your list to choose from. 

January 

Make sure you get your FAFSA completed and turned in. Remember 

to attend our Financial Aid Night for parents and students on January 

22. You will receive step-by-step instructions on how to fi ll out the 

FAFSA and how to get the most money for your college education. 

Keep thinking about possible majors and careers. Review your 

Holland Code, take the Myers Brigg Personality quiz, and have a 

meeting with the counselor regarding your career interests. Do not 

limit yourself to fi elds that others expect you to enter. Follow your heart 

and explore what YOU are interested in. Learn as much as you can 

about the careers you are considering, including average salary, work 

environment, and additional duties. You can learn the most by talking 

to someone in your fi eld of interest. Volunteer, apply for an internship, 

or work part time in the field you are considering.

Mass on Thursday, May 23, 2013. The scholarship is awarded to 

current Junior STVM students and is applied toward their Senior year

It’s official! Showcase 27 “You’re the Inspiration” is well underway 

and from the looks of things, it is going to be an amazing event! What 

is Showcase? Showcase is our annual school auction fundraiser. Aptly 

named “Showcase”, the event truly is a showcase of our students, 

our staff, our donors and the fabulous items donated. For over 27 

years, Showcase has provided millions of dollars to help thousands of 

students receive a quality Catholic education. 

We are so excited to have two freshman parent chair couples: 

Julie and Steve Buzzi VM84, parents of freshman daughter, Megan, 

and Betsy VM86 and Barry Tavolier, parents of freshman son Brian. 

These couples have amazing energy and ideas that are going to take 

Showcase right over the top. 

Along with our chair couples, this year we have an Event Producer, 

Adam Bernard VM88. Adam brings a wealth of knowledge of auction 

styled events . His vision for Showcase has all of us excited for April

INFORMATION 

Seniors MUST have their pictures taken by Carmen Studios by April 1, 2013. 

After this date there will be a late fee charged by the studio. 2012 Graduates 

should make arrangements to pick up their yearbooks. There are extra books

T.R.I.P. before Christmas break: December 

5 and December 12! Don’t miss out on the

ask your family/friends to order their gift cards through you to earn

Since our Christmas break begins on Wednesday, December 19 (which 

would usually be an order pick-up date), I’ve made arrangements for the 

December 12 order to be available for pick-up on Tuesday, December 

18 (after school, from 1:30-2:00 p.m. in the Jack and Ann Haag Student 

Center). Note that all T.R.I.P. orders must be picked up on December 

18. Any orders not picked up before 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 

18 will not be available for pick up again until we return from Christmas 

break on Thursday, January 3, 2013. (Regular order/pick-up schedules 

resume on Wednesday, January 9). I’m sorry, but there’s no fl exibility 

with the December 18 cut-off date/time as I will not be available during 

the Christmas break.....so please, plan accordingly!
