NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY<br />

INDUCTS 70 NEW MEMBERS!<br />

These new members join 51 current members<br />

The <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Vincent</strong>-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> chapter of the National Honor<br />

Society inducted 70 new members on Monday, November 19, 2012.<br />

A faculty council selected these students based on their accumulative<br />

point averages (a minimum 3.5) and faculty evaluations of their<br />

character, leadership, and service to the school and community.<br />

These new members joined the 51 current members. Chapter offi cers<br />

including President Bennett Nelson, Vice-president Gregory Rybka,<br />

Secretary Thomas Paolucci, and Treasurer Meredith Cabe conducted<br />

the traditional candle lighting ceremony that emphasized the ideals of<br />

NHS. Our guest speaker for the Induction Ceremony was Mr. Aaron<br />

Brown, member of the <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Vincent</strong>-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Mary</strong> Class of 1997, and a<br />

senior vice-president at Fahlgren Mortine, one of the nation’s largest<br />

independent marketing and communications agencies headquartered<br />

in Columbus, Ohio. Parents’ Club provides the funds for the pins that<br />

new members received from Headmaster David Rathz. Following the<br />

induction ceremony, the veteran members hosted a reception for the<br />

new inductees and their families. The chapter advisor is Ms. Pam<br />

Godshalk.<br />

National Honor Society would also like to thank the STVM community<br />

for their support of the annual “Books for the Bahamas” children’s book<br />

drive. Over 3,000 books and $1050 was donated through the homeroom<br />

competition. The books and funds will help stock elementary school<br />

libraries in impoverished areas of the Bahamas.<br />

Y-LEAD BOARD COMPLETES<br />

SERVICE PROJECT<br />

The Y-LEAD (Youth Leadership Education and Development) Board is a<br />

group of nine teen volunteers from Summa Health System, responsible<br />

for creating service projects to benefi t Summa Health System and/or<br />

the Greater Akron Community. These nine teen volunteers represent<br />

an array of local schools, including junior Julia Mendiola from STVM.<br />

This year the group collected over 500 books for First Book Greater<br />

Akron, a non-profi t organization determined to see that all children,<br />

regardless of their economic conditions, achieve more in school and<br />

in life through access to an ongoing supply of new books. Thank you,<br />

Y-LEAD, and congratulations, Julia!<br />

“MASS WEDNESDAY”<br />

BEGINS DECEMBER 5<br />

We are very excited to announce a change happening at STVM<br />

that will allow us to improve the quality of the education received here<br />

and provide our students with the experience of the Eucharist on a<br />

more regular basis. The Catholic Catechism states, “The Eucharist<br />

is the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments<br />

are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the<br />

blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church,<br />

namely Christ himself.” Therefore, it is our obligation as the people<br />

of God to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist as often as<br />

we can. It is also important that this be exemplifi ed throughout our<br />

school and, most especially, in our school schedule. This is the perfect<br />

reflection of our Catholic identity. At the same time, one of the desires<br />

coming from our faculty has been to have the opportunity to meet with<br />

each of their students individually throughout the academic year. This<br />

will help them provide more personalized instruction and direction to<br />

our students.<br />

We are implementing a new plan to help us with both of these goals!<br />

Beginning on December 5, 2012, each Wednesday will be designated as<br />

“Mass Wednesday”. We will be on a Mass schedule each Wednesday<br />

for the remainder of this academic year. Two grade levels (9 and 10,<br />

11 and 12) will attend mass every other week at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Vincent</strong> Church.<br />

On the Wednesdays that a particular grade level will not be attending<br />

Mass, they will use that “Mass Period” as a special study period,<br />

rotating through periods 1 through 8, during which time teachers can<br />

meet individually with their students. <strong>St</strong>udents not meeting individually<br />

with their teachers can use that period for silent study time.<br />

With this new implementation, our students will have the opportunity<br />

to experience the Eucharist every other week and receive personalized<br />

attention and direction from each of their teachers! It’s a “win – win”<br />

situation for everyone!<br />

ST. VINCENT- ST. MARY HIGH<br />

SCHOOL LOCAL SCIENCE DAY<br />

SET FOR FEBRUARY 12<br />

The Ohio Academy of Science and <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Vincent</strong>-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

are announcing that the STVM local science fair will be held on Tuesday,<br />

February 12, 2013. Participating students from all science courses and<br />

levels will be showcasing their Science Inquiry Projects at the fair.<br />

Judging of the projects will take place at the STVM Cosgrove Center<br />

from 4 - 6 p.m. The projects may be viewed by the public from 3 - 4 p.m.<br />

and from 6 - 7 p.m. Project boards earning a superior rating will also be<br />

displayed in the LRC on February 13, 2013. The awards ceremony will<br />

be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Cosgrove Center on the day of the fair.<br />

Projects will be represented in the following categories: Biology,<br />

Chemistry, Earth Science and Physical Science. All projects will be<br />

judged and awards will be given to the top inquiry projects in each<br />

category. Superior rated students from the STVM local science fair will<br />

attend the 65th Western Reserve District 5 Science Day at The University<br />

of Akron on Saturday, March 16, 2013, an event also sponsored by<br />

The Ohio Academy of Science. Selected student projects will also be<br />

entered into the Intel Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair to<br />

be held March 4-7, 2013 at Cleveland <strong>St</strong>ate University and the ABIA<br />

Best Medicine Fair Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the National Inventors’<br />

Hall of Fame® <strong>School</strong> in Akron, Ohio.<br />

PARENT SURVEY IN JANUARY<br />

<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Vincent</strong>-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Mary</strong> is very proud to be accredited by both the<br />

Ohio Catholic <strong>School</strong> Accrediting Association and the North Central<br />

Association of <strong>School</strong>s. To merit accreditation, member schools must<br />

be engaged in continuous improvement. During a six-year cyclical<br />

process, accredited schools profi le their students and community,<br />

identify areas needing improvement, set specifi c goals, and work<br />

toward enhanced student performance in the targeted areas.<br />

We are currently midway through the six-year cycle. Our two target<br />

goals are the following:<br />

1) Catholic Identity Goal: <strong>St</strong>udents will demonstrate their<br />

understanding of Catholic morals and values in building a faith<br />

community of respect for themselves, others, and the campus<br />

environment.<br />

2) Academic Goal: <strong>St</strong>udents will learn and apply study skill<br />

techniques across the curriculum to improve academic<br />

performance.<br />

One very important component of our process is surveying our<br />

community: students, parents, and faculty. The surveys help us track<br />

progress on our goals and also provide demographic and evaluative<br />

data needed to update our student and community profi le and identify<br />

areas of strength and areas that need improvement.<br />

Consequently, we will be conducting a parent survey in early January.<br />

The survey will be electronic and will be available through online links.<br />

It will have 3 parts, each with its own link: 1) Catholic Identity - Defi ning<br />

Characteristics; 2) Catholic Identity - Program Effectiveness; 3) Parent<br />

Survey. During the week of January 6, 2013 you will receive an email<br />

that will explain how to access the survey, which should only take<br />

approximately 20 minutes to complete. It will be accessible through<br />

January 25, 2013. The responses that you provide will be totally<br />

confidential. The school will only see the information after it has been<br />

analyzed. We appreciate your time and efforts to make STVM a school<br />

of excellence.<br />

IMPORTANT 2012-2013 DATES FOR<br />

ADMISSIONS<br />

Irish Academic Scholarship winners will be hosted at our annual<br />

Scholarship Dinner on Monday, December 10, 2012 in the STVM<br />

<strong>St</strong>udent Center. This event will honor the recipients of our Irish<br />

Academic Scholarships, which are awarded to the top scorers on<br />

our fall scholarship/placement test. These eighth graders and their<br />

parents are treated to a well-deserved formal evening of dining and<br />

congratulations. STVM President, Thomas M. Carone, Headmaster<br />

David Rathz and Admissions Director Joanne Wiseman will present<br />

the program for the evening. Our Academic Scholarship recipients for<br />

the Class of 2017 are: Kevin Feezel, William Schell, and Abigail<br />

Eighth Grade applications will be distributed by Catholic elementary<br />

schools on Monday, January 14, 2013 and “<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Selection<br />

Week” will take place January 14-18, 2013. The deadline for eighth<br />

graders in Catholic schools to select their high school is Friday, January<br />

18, and the applications will be sent to their fi rst-choice schools during<br />

the week of January 21, 2013. STVM will mail letters of acceptance<br />

on Thursday, February 14, 2013.<br />

NOTEWORTHY NOTES<br />

‘TIS THE SEASON!<br />

The annual STVM Christmas Choir Concert will take place on<br />

Tuesday, December 4, at 7 p.m. This concert will feature all members of<br />

our 6 choirs—Liturgical Choir, Concert Choir, Symphonic Choir, Women’s<br />

and Men’s Ensembles, and Show Choir. No tickets are needed, but<br />

donations will be accepted at the door. Please plan to attend and get<br />

into the holiday spirit with beautiful music from our choirs!<br />

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL MOTHERS’ NIGHT OUT!<br />

Our annual Mothers’ Night Out, sponsored by Parents’ Club and<br />

chaired by Jerry Kelly, was another big success. Approximately 115<br />

moms, grandmothers and alumni enjoyed a wonderful evening with a<br />

great crowd, great food, great prizes, great fun, and great camaraderie!<br />

Fourteen vendors were present, displaying their “wares” – including<br />

nail polishing and hand massages, chair massages, jewelry, cosmetics,<br />

candles, spices and mixes, serving pieces, purses, baskets, “corn<br />

cozies”, and more!<br />

Once again, thanks to Fr. Berardi V51 for his gifts to all who were<br />

present. Everyone enjoyed the same location – <strong>St</strong>. George’s Fellowship<br />

Hall – and many commented that they hope next year’s event will<br />

continue to be held at the same place. As the evening was ending, many<br />

favorable comments were heard including one mom who said, “I had a<br />

ball…I’ll defi nitely be back next year!”<br />

The next Parents’ Club activity is the annual “Faculty/<strong>St</strong>aff Appreciation”<br />

in December. Thank you for your support!<br />

semester exams have concluded and return<br />

on Friday evening around 9 p.m. The cost will<br />

be $150 for an individual student. Contact Mr.<br />

Incoming Freshmen<br />

The STVM Endowment Fund offers scholarships to incoming freshmen<br />

through the Family & Memorial Scholarship Program. The deadline<br />

for incoming freshman (Class of 2017) to complete scholarship<br />

applications is December 3, 2012.<br />

Scholarship materials for students entering Grades 10-12 will<br />

be available mid-January 2013. For questions or to receive forms<br />

<strong>School</strong> Directory is available for pickup in the STVM<br />

COLLEGE TIMELINE FOR SENIORS<br />

December<br />

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! It is now time for you to fill<br />

out the Free Application for Federal <strong>St</strong>udent Aid (FAFSA). The form<br />

is online and may be submitted after January 1. You cannot submit<br />

it any earlier, but the sooner it is done, the less headache it will be<br />

for you and your parents later. You might be receiving a reply if you<br />

applied early to colleges. If you are accepted, you may need to send<br />

a deposit and withdrawal application for other colleges. If you are<br />

“deferred” that means there is still hope and a decision has not yet<br />

been made on your application. You might have to enroll at a regional<br />

campus of your selected school and apply to the main campus again<br />

after a semester or two. It does not hurt to call or write to someone<br />

in admissions. Denied admission? Do not lose heart. This does not<br />

mean you are not smart or worthy. You should have other schools on<br />

your list to choose from.<br />

January<br />

Make sure you get your FAFSA completed and turned in. Remember<br />

to attend our Financial Aid Night for parents and students on January<br />

22. You will receive step-by-step instructions on how to fi ll out the<br />

FAFSA and how to get the most money for your college education.<br />

Keep thinking about possible majors and careers. Review your<br />

Holland Code, take the Myers Brigg Personality quiz, and have a<br />

meeting with the counselor regarding your career interests. Do not<br />

limit yourself to fi elds that others expect you to enter. Follow your heart<br />

and explore what YOU are interested in. Learn as much as you can<br />

about the careers you are considering, including average salary, work<br />

environment, and additional duties. You can learn the most by talking<br />

to someone in your fi eld of interest. Volunteer, apply for an internship,<br />

or work part time in the field you are considering.<br />

Thank you to EVERYONE for purchasing Market Day Pies! We were<br />

able to donate 26 pies to the Catholic Worker of Akron Peter Maurin<br />

Center. The Peter Maurin Center, which opened in 2006 at 1096 South<br />

Main <strong>St</strong>reet in Downtown Akron, is operated by the Catholic Worker<br />

organization. Thank you for helping to make the holidays a little more<br />

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS FOR<br />

CURRENT JUNIORS!<br />

Attention Parents! If either you or your spouse are a graduate<br />

of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Mary</strong>, <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Vincent</strong> or <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Vincent</strong>-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Mary</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, your<br />

student may be eligible to receive the Annual STVM Alumni Association<br />

Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded at the Senior Farewell<br />

Mass on Thursday, May 23, 2013. The scholarship is awarded to<br />

current Junior STVM students and is applied toward their Senior year<br />

tuition. A letter and application form will be mailed to your attention<br />

during the week of January 14. All eligible Junior students who have<br />

one or both parents who are alumni are encouraged to apply by the<br />

deadline of Friday, February 15, 2013.<br />

It’s official! Showcase 27 “You’re the Inspiration” is well underway<br />

and from the looks of things, it is going to be an amazing event! What<br />

is Showcase? Showcase is our annual school auction fundraiser. Aptly<br />

named “Showcase”, the event truly is a showcase of our students,<br />

our staff, our donors and the fabulous <strong>items</strong> donated. For over 27<br />

years, Showcase has provided millions of dollars to help thousands of<br />

students receive a quality Catholic education.<br />

We are so excited to have two freshman parent chair couples:<br />

Julie and <strong>St</strong>eve Buzzi VM84, parents of freshman daughter, Megan,<br />

and Betsy VM86 and Barry Tavolier, parents of freshman son Brian.<br />

These couples have amazing energy and ideas that are going to take<br />

Showcase right over the top.<br />

Along with our chair couples, this year we have an Event Producer,<br />

Adam Bernard VM88. Adam brings a wealth of knowledge of auction<br />

styled events . His vision for Showcase has all of us excited for April<br />

to come. Mark your calendar! You’re the Inspiration! Saturday, April<br />

20, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. on on our STVM Campus.<br />

IMPORTANT YEARBOOK<br />

INFORMATION<br />

Seniors MUST have their pictures taken by Carmen <strong>St</strong>udios by April 1, 2013.<br />

After this date there will be a late fee charged by the studio. 2012 Graduates<br />

should make arrangements to pick up their yearbooks. There are extra books<br />

available for purchase for $65. Please email Beth Dolan for more information<br />

(bdolan@stvm.com).<br />

The final deadline for 2013 Yearbook orders has passed. All students will be<br />

charged $60 additionally to their tuition account unless they have requested<br />

otherwise.<br />

RECYCLED UNIFORM SALE<br />

Send in your “Gently” Used uniforms to the STVM Bookstore. This<br />

is a wonderful service offered to our current students and families.<br />

“Gently” used uniforms are on sale in the STVM Bookstore! Each<br />

item is $5.00 and quantities are limited. Proceeds benefi t the STVM<br />

Parents’ Club and the programs that we support and sponsor. The<br />

STVM Parents’ Club is pleased to offer this service to our community<br />

Since our Christmas break begins on Wednesday, December 19 (which<br />

would usually be an order pick-up date), I’ve made arrangements for the<br />

December 12 order to be available for pick-up on Tuesday, December<br />

18 (after school, from 1:30-2:00 p.m. in the Jack and Ann Haag <strong>St</strong>udent<br />

Center). Note that all T.R.I.P. orders must be picked up on December<br />

18. Any orders not picked up before 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December<br />

18 will not be available for pick up again until we return from Christmas<br />

break on Thursday, January 3, 2013. (Regular order/pick-up schedules<br />

resume on Wednesday, January 9). I’m sorry, but there’s no fl exibility<br />

with the December 18 cut-off date/time as I will not be available during<br />

the Christmas break.....so please, plan accordingly!<br />
