Braun Printing & Design is known in
the Minneapolis area for delivering
a wide range of creative, printing
and copying services, through
mailing and fulfillment. The company

Equipped with an ABDick Century
3500 two-tower press
and a DPM platesetter,
Braun was primarily
producing one- and
two-color printing,
with only a few four-color jobs a month.
Owner Dave Braun says, “For four-color
work, we had to charge extra for the addditional
time and effort of producing these
jobs on a two-color press. Therefore, it was
becoming increasingly difficult for us to
remain competitive.” Additionally, Braun
points out that by running sheets through
the press twice, it can be difficult to see a
problem until the final color is laid down.
At that point, half the time and all the
materials are already invested in the job.
Braun knew he needed to invest in
a four-color press in order to remain
competitive and grow his business, but he
also knew he would need to acquire a press
that was extremely productive and
could deliver exceptional quality
in order to justify the investment.
Braun says, “Although we offer
copying services, we are a printing
company more than a copying
company. We’ve trained our
customers to know the difference
between good toner-based
copying solutions and high-end
offset printing.”

Hitting the Road
Last year, Braun attended a Presstek open
house in Minneapolis where Presstek’s
chemistry-free CTP systems and DI
presses were showcased. Braun says, “I was
very excited when I first saw the new DI
press. Its level of quality and makeready
speed leapfrogged any digital color system
or offset press that we
knew about.”
Braun decided to

immediately saw a significant boost in
business in the first six weeks.

Easy Installation
The two technical components of
Presstek Guardian Support are the
“agent” and the “server.” The agent is
embedded software (less than 1 MB)
installed on the monitored device or
PCs when controlling several devices.
The agent collects performance data on
an ongoing basis and sends data and log
files to the server via secure Internet
communication. The server processes
data and gathers alerts provided by your
devices. It is the management console
that enables our support team to
consolidate and utilize data, run remote
diagnostics, set automated rules for
action when certain events occur, and
distribute software updates.
No special network connections or
special port numbers are required. The
only requirements at your site are a
dedicated IP address and high-speed
Internet access. A Presstek field engineer will install Presstek Guardian Support and
configure connections on-site according to your network requirements.
Security and Reliability
Presstek Guardian Support is based on intelligent device management technology from
Questra Corporation, which provides solutions to leading manufacturers of medical
and diagnostic equipment, where security and reliablity requirements are critical.

additional printing and bindery work that
he would not have seen otherwise. Braun
comments, “I was skeptical because I didn’t
really understand how that would happen
until I started selling DI printing jobs. But
they were absolutely right.” In the first
month after the press was installed, Braun
captured four new projects that he wouldn’t
have had otherwise. He says, “On those
four projects, the work that the DI press
generated was $5,088. The additional
revenue generated by design, bindery and
other services for these jobs amounted to
$2,276. So in the very first month, with
almost no promotion, the DI press brought
in $7,365 worth of new work. We also ran
$2,182 worth of work through the press
from existing customers, so in the first
month, the DI press generated nearly
$10,000, making it immediately profitable.”
Cost Dynamics
“Our production costs on the DI are so
low,” comments Braun, “we can offer
superior pricing with quality that other

Braun notes that he still uses the
Century press and digital plate maker,
both standalone and in combination with
the DI, but says, “It was a pretty nice day
here when we removed all the Century
Press process color definitions from our
estimating system, because the DI process
definitions result in more money for us
and a better value for our customers.”
He also applauds the Presstek sales
organization for helping him accurately
analyze the profitability potential of the DI
press. He adds, “I hate to think of where
we would be today without this press. It is
making a huge difference in the way we
run our company. When you get right
down to it, the press does everything
Presstek says it can do, and much more.
