Two Paths to E/M Selection
• PATH ONE
• Basing the code on Time
• Counseling and Coordination
of Care are 50% or > of f‐f time.
• The only exception to this if
you are using an add on
psychotherapy code, you
cannot use time as the basis of
selecting the code for the E/M
portion of the work.
• In the Community MH
setting it is often found that
the majority of E/M services
include Counseling &
Coordination of Care which
is over 50% of f‐f time.
