President’s Message
P
-30- Nevermore
hotographs are forever, and within them a photographer never passes. Those
are my words, perhaps inelegantly drawn from the following words of Karl Lagerfeld,
“What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever,
impossible to reproduce,” and of Susan Sontag, “All photographs are memento mori.
To take a photograph is to participate in another person’s (or thing’s) mortality, vulnerability,
mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs
testify to time’s relentless melt.” While they speak of the photograph, I speak of us, the
photographers.
Two months have passed since we lost our member, and the world lost photographer
Ann Raine, so I was quite surprised during our May 17th competition when, after judging
the anonymously submitted digital images, it was revealed that one of the winning
competition photographs was submitted by Ann Raine. It’s no surprise that Ann’s photographs
continue to have an impact but it was somewhat surprising to feel Ann’s presence
with us that evening—especially for those of us she beat in competition—again!
For anyone with a print journalism background, the term “-30-” is used to signify the
end of a piece of written work. According to Hadass Kogan’s 2007 article in the American
Journalism Review the general adoption of the term -30- has become so widespread
that Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary gives its definition as, “a sign of completion.”
Ann’s work and Ann’s presence among us are apparently not yet completed. In fact, Ann
secured the cover for this month’s edition of In Focus. “Thirty” for a photographer? I
think not. To paraphrase another, “ -30-. Nevermore.”
Rita Auber, our delightful hostess for our 4b
make-up competition on May 17, 2013, came to us
via a former member, Silvania Azevedo, who has
returned to her native Brazil. Silvania is welcome
back if she ever returns to the US. Rita is interested
in bringing her artistic skills as a hairdresser to another
as she says, “chapter 2 of her life.” Her current
goal is to learn as much as she can so she can then
concentrate on dramatic night lighting and B/W
photography. When Rita is not soaking up whatever
she can about her camera and photography, she
likes to knit blankets and scarves. We are lucky to
have such a versatile new member.
FIELD TRIP CORNER
Photo Opportunities Suggestions
By Deborah Lea Cohen
Although we each know of some wonderful places to photograph, there are
always others we wish we knew about. It is for this reason our “Field Trip” has
been expanded to “Field Trip and Photo Opportunities.” Hopefully, there is
something for every interest. http://wpsphoto.org/FieldTrips.html
The suggestions are divided into three sections. The first, “Photo Opportunities,”
consists of various events held at one venue such as: (1) Westchester
County has reinstated the nine Ethnic Festivals at the Kensico Dam from May
through the beginning of August. Entry and parking is free. (2) The Westchester
County Center has several photogenic events throughout the year. On
July 7, the Reptile Expo should interest at least some members seeking scaly,
slithery creatures to shoot. By the way, they’ve often done well in competition.
(3) The Javits Center has a fine array of events ranging from the International
Fancy Food Convention to the Jewelers Association of America Show to The
Wholesale Expo trade show with some of a myriad of items that can be sold as
wholesale.
The second section “Other Events” has dated events not held in a single venue
are listed. Many of our members are avid flower photographers, so the Garden
Conservancy Open Days’ website is in a prominent place on the list. Past field
trip venues are sometimes listed so that we can attend them on our own while
exploring new scheduled trips as a group. These include Green Chimneys’
Birds of Prey (June 2) and the Wednesday evening car shows at Bear Mountain
from May to September. Other events include apple and/or pumpkin picking
(flowers, fruits, excellent for our Harvest exhibit) and Halloween Blaze in either
of two places. If you’ve been to the one in Van Cortland Manor, you may
want to check out the one wwin Old Westbury, NY.
The third section, “On-going Photo Opportunities” is a growing list of varied
and fascinating places to shoot. These places are open all year. Here are several
unusual museums, such as the Motorcycle Museum, Wilderstein House and
the Trolley Museum. A few of the parks with interesting structures and buildings
as well as plants and flowers are Ladson Park and Arboretum, NJ Great
Falls National Park, Untermeyer Park and Lenoir Preserves. Various other
places are listed that can either occupy a full day or just a few hours, but each
will have something worth shooting.
These are just a few of the ever changing opportunities available to photographers.
Besides the ones listed, members are continually suggesting field trip
places. When these suggestions not scheduled for club trips, they are often
added to one of the three Photo Opportunities Suggestions. All suggestions
are very welcome.
In short, from your own backyard to suggestions on the web, just keep shooting.
Shoot from different angles, different settings, using different lens. Go
alone. Go with a buddy. But go! And, most of all—ENJOY!!!
