President’s Message P -30- Nevermore hotographs are forever, and within them a photographer never passes. Those are my words, perhaps inelegantly drawn from the following words of Karl Lagerfeld, “What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce,” and of Susan Sontag, “All photographs are memento mori. To take a photograph is to participate in another person’s (or thing’s) mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time’s relentless melt.” While they speak of the photograph, I speak of us, the photographers. Two months have passed since we lost our member, and the world lost photographer Ann Raine, so I was quite surprised during our May 17th competition when, after judging the anonymously submitted digital images, it was revealed that one of the winning competition photographs was submitted by Ann Raine. It’s no surprise that Ann’s photographs continue to have an impact but it was somewhat surprising to feel Ann’s presence with us that evening—especially for those of us she beat in competition—again! For anyone with a print journalism background, the term “-30-” is used to signify the end of a piece of written work. According to Hadass Kogan’s 2007 article in the American Journalism Review the general adoption of the term -30- has become so widespread that Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary gives its definition as, “a sign of completion.” Ann’s work and Ann’s presence among us are apparently not yet completed. In fact, Ann secured the cover for this month’s edition of In Focus. “Thirty” for a photographer? I think not. To paraphrase another, “ -30-. Rita is interested in bringing her artistic skills as a hairdresser to another as she says, “chapter 2 of her life.” Her current goal is to learn as much as she can so she can then concentrate on dramatic night lighting and B/W photography. When Rita is not soaking up whatever she can about her camera and photography, she likes to knit blankets and scarves. We are lucky to have such a versatile new member.
