SCIENCE
Edited by Christopher Keane and Megan Sever
The importance of minerals in our everyday lives cannot be
underestimated. The Consumer’s Guide to Minerals is a different
take on them. Rather than focusing on visual and physical
properties, this book explores minerals’ myriad uses in scientific
research, manufacturing, medicine and many commercial
applications some of which may even shock you. This digital
exclusive is an important reference for
students of applied science, geology
and economics; practicing engineers and
professional geoscientists in government
service, environment and sustainability;
and those professionals working in the
minerals industry or those serving the
minerals industry.
The Consumer’s Guide to Minerals is a compilation
of monthly articles from EARTH
One Man’s Planet
AGI Publications
Terminology and technical guides
The Geoscience Handbook:
AGI Data Sheets Fourth Edition, revised
Compiled by J. Douglas Walker and Harvey A. Cohen
One of the best-kept secrets in geology is this handy compilation
of geological information. The essential reference for geoscientists
in the field, office, or lab, The Geoscience Handbook provides quick
reference for the key metrics and concepts, as well as short tutorials
on subjects that may not be familiar to all geoscientists.
The Handbook covers diverse subjects, from geophysics to geologic
map symbols to GPS usage, and everything in between! Newly
updated for 2009, The Geoscience Handbook is now a larger, but
still portable, format for easier reading. Also now in full color,
the Handbook uses color photos when possible to better illustrate
geology in the real world. New to this printing is the new and
revised 2009 Geologic Timescale published by the Geological
Society of America.
ISBN 978-0-922152-84-1. Spiral bound, 5"x8" 314 pages.
One Man’s Planet:
Earth in Today’s Political Culture
Stephen M. Testa
One Man’s Planet is one slightly off-centered geologist’s
introduction to how politics, pop-culture and the earth
sciences intertwine in our daily lives. It is a humorous
look at a myriad of issues that grace the news and drive
political debates from local councils to international
discourse. One Man’s Planet picks apart the rhetoric on all
sides of these debates to look at how the science describes
the issue, often to the nakedness of the opposing parties.
Tackling topics like climate, energy, water, and hazards,
Stephen Testa channels Pink Floyd, Mad Max, and
Shakespeare among others to examine the latest scientific
understanding of these issues. He deftly weaves all this
into a very informative and entertaining tapestry on the
planet today and the planet’s tomorrow. Come tour the
Earth with Testa as your guide!
Data Sheet 1.4: Geochronologic Methods
James K.W. Lee, Queens University Canada
Geochronology ("geo" = earth, "chronos" = time) involves the use of some natural,
time-dependent process or phenomenon as a "clock" to measure absolute
time. Geochronological techniques can generally be subdivided into two types:
(1) isotopic (also called "radiometric"), which are directly based on the radioactive
decay of naturally occurring isotopes, and (2) radiation-effect, which are
dependent on the effects of physical interactions of radiation with atoms in a
crystal. Isotopically-based methods can be used to date events or processes
that occur from recent times onwards whereas most radiation-effect methods
are generally restricted to the Quaternary or younger.
Units
a annum (= 1 year); the de facto standard geochronological unit.
Commonly used with SI prefixes, e.g. 1 ka = 1000 years, 1 Ma = 1 million
(106) years, 1 Ga = 1 billion (109) years. In terms of absolute age, generally
used in the context of years ago, e.g. the K-T boundary has been
dated at 65.5 Ma or the age of the earth is approximately 4.55 Ga. Can
also be used to denote the duration of an event, but see yr below.
yr year; occasionally used by some scientific journals to distinguish a duration
or period of time, rather than an absolute age. Can also be used with
SI prefixes. For example, if a Mississippian metamorphic event occurred
from 349 Ma to 340 Ma, one could state that the event lasted for 9 Myr.
Isotope Geochronology
Theory
− dP
dt = λP
All radiometric methods are based on the radioactive decay of a parent
("radioactive") isotope (P) to a daughter ("radiogenic") isotope (D) as described
by the following fundamental differential equation:
where t is time and λ is the decay constant, which describes the rate of radioactive
decay. Solving this equation with the appropriate boundary conditions leads
to the well-known "age equation" which expresses the age of a sample (t) as a
function of λ, D and P:
The radiogenic daughter product directly resulting from the radioactive decay of
13
t= 1 λ ln ⎛ D ⎝ P +1 ⎞
⎠
the parent is often denoted with an asterisk, e.g 40 Ar* or 87 Sr*. The half-life (t1/2)
of a radioactive isotope is the time required for 50% of the parent atoms to
decay to the respective daughter atoms. From the age equation above, it can
be shown that t1/2 is related to λ by
Geology
The fifth edition of the Glossary of
reflects both advances in
scientific thought and changes in
usage. Approximately 3,600 of the
nearly 40,000 entries were added
since the fourth edition, and nearly
13,000 entries were updated. This revised
edition includes over 1,000 additional
terms and modifications.
Many definitions provide a
syllabification guide and background
information. Thus a reader will learn
the difference between look-alike pairs,
such as sylvanite (a mineral) and sylvinite
(a rock); the origin of terms; the meaning
of abbreviations and acronyms common
in the geoscience vocabulary; the dates
many Fifth terms were first used; the meaning Edition
of certain prefixes; and the preferred term
of two or more synonyms.
The authority of this edition, like that
of its predecessors, rests on the expertise
of geoscientists REVISED
from many specialties,
who have reviewed definitions, added
new terms, and cited references. Their
contributions make the Glossary an
The fifth edition of the Glossary of
Geology reflects both advances in
scientific thought and changes in
usage. Approximately 3,600 of the
nearly 40,000 entries were added
since the fourth edition, and nearly
13,000 entries were updated. This rev
edition includes over 1,000 additiona
terms and modifications.
Many definitions provide a
syllabification guide and background
information. Thus a reader will learn
the difference between look-alike pair
such as sylvanite (a mineral) and sylv
(a rock); the origin of terms; the mea
of abbreviations and acronyms comm
in the geoscience vocabulary; the date
many terms were first used; the mean
of certain prefixes; and the preferred
of two or more synonyms.
The authority of this edition, like
of its predecessors, rests on the exper
of geoscientists from many specialtie
who have reviewed definitions, adde
new terms, and cited references. The
contributions make the Glossary an
essential reference work for all in the
geoscience community.
Earth From Space shows how satellite imaging — also
called remote sensing — works and showcases some of
the most extraordinary photographs ever published.
Earth From Space covers subjects ranging from aeronautics
to history to ecology with unforgettable illustrations — an
expansive big picture view of the world.
Earth From Space presents stunning color photographs of:
Geology is thrilling. It’s the Earth in all its splendor. Unfortunately,
geology texts rarely communicate that sense of excitement.
Enter Michael Collier, geologist, writer and one of America’s premier aerial
photographers. For over 20 years, he has piloted his Cessna 180 to
inaccessible locations and returned with stunning photographs that lay
bare the Earth’s workings. Over the Mountains includes:
• Detailed and breathtaking large-format color photographs of every major
mountain range in the U.S.
• Text, diagrams and captions that explain and illuminate the geologic
processes shown in the photographs.
After exploring the pages of Over the Mountains, readers will never think
of mountains — or geology — in the same way again.
Water — not oil or minerals — is the most
controlling resource on Earth. Its distribution,
quantity, availability, and quality are the controls
for the development of agriculture, industry,
rural, urban, and municipal use. Water and the
its importance; where water comes from; waterrelated
environmental concerns; water protection,
policies and regulations; and our future needs
for water. This richly illustrated, non-technical
Living With Unstable Ground
Thomas Holzer
Most of us take the stability
of the ground for granted.
However, many ongoing
natural processes and human
activities, and occasionally
complex combinations
of both, displace the
ground. Whether ground
displacements are large and catastrophic or
small and slow, their cumulative impact during
the lifetimes of humans or civilizations may be
large and destructive. Parts of every state in the
United States are affected by these instabilities of
the ground. As the demand for land grows and
humans increasingly modify their environment,
more and more people will be exposed to these
instabilities and suffer the consequences. Living
with Unstable Ground will increase your awareness
and understanding of how you can build safely in
areas with unstable ground and what society can
do to reduce the impact of unstable ground.
Evolution and the Fossil Record
John Pojeta, Jr. and Dale A. Springer
Evolution and the Fossil Record, an eye-catching booklet produced
by the American Geosciences Institute in cooperation with the
Paleontological Society, aims to help the general public gain a better
understanding of one of the fundamental underlying concepts of
modern science.
Colorful photos, drawings, and illustrations complement the authors’
conversational style as they discuss geologic time; change through
time; Darwin’s theory of evolution; evolution as a mechanism for
change; the nature of species; the nature of theory; paleontology,
geology, and evolution; and determining the age of fossils and rocks.
Four “case study” examples from the fossil record — evolution of
vertebrate legs, evolution of birds, evolution of mammals, and
evolution of whales — are presented to provide a time perspective
for understanding the evolution of life on Earth. This non-technical
introduction to evolution contains straightforward definitions as well
as discussions of complex ideas.
The AGI Foundation’s programs impact young people,
educators, researchers, the public and policymakers, all
who comprise the geoscientists and informed citizens
of tomorrow. AGI Foundation’s most recognized programs
focus on geoscience STEM educational excellence
and workforce development, and public awareness and
government affairs. Widely acclaimed examples include
the most prestigious endowed Fisher Congressional
Fellowship, development of inquiry-based geoscience
curricula for elementary and secondary school, conducting
teacher academies to improve instruction of the geosciences,
collection and analysis of geoscience workforce
status and trends, and award winning publications and
training materials to increase awareness and geoscience
literacy by students, the public and professionals.
A major new initiative that the AGI Foundation is working
to fund is the implementation of the new AGI Center
for Geoscience Education and Public Understanding. The
Center builds upon the foundation of the AGI and capitalizes
on its strength as a federation of 50 scientific and
professional geoscience societies representing a quarter
of a million practicing geoscientists in the United States.
Critical new initiatives of the center require new
funding from the AGI Foundation, include the following
focus areas:
• Understanding the Status of U.S. Earth
Science Education with the 2013
“roll-out” of the Nation’s new science
standards in which 26 States have
signed on and 40 states are expected to
fully adopt;
• Supporting innovative Energy
Education;
• Conducting and distributing outcomes
from Geoscience Critical Issue Forums;
• Expanding the scope and distribution
of geoscience career materials and
workforce information;
• More outreach to students positioned
earlier in the “geoscience education flow”.
