externally as seen <strong>in</strong> connection with the church service as a whole. Regard<strong>in</strong>g the Noonday<br />

Sermon/Service <strong>and</strong> the exam<strong>in</strong>ation of the Catechism, Johann Friedrich Leibniz noted <strong>in</strong> his Kirchen-<br />

Andachten from 1694: “Dur<strong>in</strong>g the Midday Service/Sermon you will see, for the most part, servants <strong>and</strong><br />

tradesmen assembl<strong>in</strong>g here which may occur because seat<strong>in</strong>g or st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g room dur<strong>in</strong>g the ma<strong>in</strong> church<br />

service <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g or because they had been h<strong>in</strong>dered from attend<strong>in</strong>g the very early morn<strong>in</strong>g service<br />

because of the necessary work <strong>in</strong> which they had been engaged. And it cannot be denied that there are<br />

others who were kept from attend<strong>in</strong>g the very early morn<strong>in</strong>g service because they were <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g<br />

unauthorized work or simply were too lazy to get up. And yet there are also devout Christians who come<br />

to listen to all three sermons <strong>and</strong> eagerly await them. 35<br />
