Welcome to our 2013–14
season. I am delighted to
introduce another superb
programme of the best that
classical music has to offer.
This is an exciting season for us, and in so
many ways. Across several of our venues, we
host Barbican Britten – an incisive exploration
of Benjamin Britten’s music in his centenary
year – taking in music both sacred and secular
with the involvement of students from the
Guildhall School of Music & Drama. We also
celebrate the 80th birthday of one of Britain’s
most significant contemporary composers, Sir
Harrison Birtwistle. Valery Gergiev and the
London Symphony Orchestra explore in depth
the music of Berlioz, and Yuja Wang is the
focus of this season’s UBS Soundscapes LSO
Artist Portrait. The BBC Symphony Orchestra
welcomes its exciting new chief conductor,
Sakari Oramo. The Academy of Ancient
Music and Britten Sinfonia perform their first
full seasons here as associate ensembles,
with many of their concerts in Milton Court
Concert Hall, the Guildhall School of Music
& Drama’s new state-of-the-art venue, about
which you can read more on page 29.
We are incredibly fortunate to have such a
remarkable array of prestigious international
ensembles making the Barbican their London
home, and it is these close artistic partnerships
that make it possible for us to offer such a
rich and diverse season of concerts stretching
from Baroque opera to the most cuttingedge
contemporary classical music.
Alongside the concerts of our resident and
associate orchestras and ensembles, this
season the Barbican brings together its
own distinctive season of concerts under
the banner of Barbican Presents. We look
forward to international associate residencies
from Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig and
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam,
a Maxim Vengerov artist spotlight and our
Baroque opera series.
I’d like to thank the Barbican’s growing
community of supporters, without whom
it would not be possible to present
this outstanding season. We are very
grateful for their commitment.
I hope you will be able to enjoy
