Bosch India News – The best of 2013
Continuing Success – Changes in top management
Special Edition | 3
Dear Readers,
The BI News Editorial team wishes you a rewarding and professionally successful new year ahead!
Season’s Greetings from all of us.
In your hands, is a special edition of BI News which encapsulates all important changes of the year gone by. The year
2013 was a mixed bag and many important developments took place. We realized that it was necessary to pause and
take a moment to look back - gather the emotions, take pride in the achievements, commend the contribution of all our
valuable associates, learn lessons picking out inspiration for the coming year that awaits us.
2013 was also the year of reaffirmation of Bosch's commitment to India with investments made in diverse business
sectors for sustainable growth, despite the challenging times. Non-automotive businesses gained momentum during the
year.
Another highlight of the year was the 'Most ‘Value’able CEO’ award by the Business World magazine. Chosen from
an exhaustive survey - Mr. V K Viswanathan was ranked as one of the most ‘Value’able CEOs of 2012-13 (in the large
companies category). He entered the league of a leadership which turns the tide of companies towards stability,
sustenance and self reliance.
Last year, the BI News team endeavored to discover more about associates. We delved independently in detail in niche
topics such as ‘women workforce in manufacturing’ and the evolution towards enhancing gender diversity in the
company, the training and development programs available to empower associates, and the anticipated role of Gen Y in
shaping tomorrow's future of the company. Yet, we have to remember that it is teamwork between all age groups at work
that takes us forward.
The Bosch workforce is coming of age with the implementation of Enterprise 2.0 which began late last year.
Collaboration and knowledge sharing are the catchwords. Now all associates are part of the same sphere. For Bosch,
globalization is about business beyond borders, about interconnectedness and benefiting from the rich diversity of its
associates.
One of our patient, yet exciting task undertaken since last year was to go back in time and open doors of the history of
Bosch in India, and create valuable nuggets of company's happenings in the bygone decades. You will learn in depth
about how Bosch established itself in India. The Bangalore and Nashik plants have played a pivotal role by way of which
Bosch has an enduring place in the annals of Indian Automotive industry. We wish that all other new manufacturing sites
achieve the same success and reach greater heights.
"If I look at Bosch in India 10 years ago and today, I would say we are fully up to speed as far as the product technology
is concerned. ... We have to be aware that emerging markets are always more volatile and we need to balance between
short-term focus on one hand and long- term focus on the other. The way forward now is to be flexible and have the
agility to adjust to change." - Dr. Bernd Bohr. Undeterred by short-term fluctuations, Dr. Bohr has a way forward.
Thereby, let us seize the opportunities we have and rise to make a difference.
Happy reading!
Cover Image: As we look forward to another enriching and rewarding year, we take a look back at all those defining moments of
2013 that have helped us come so far. While 2013 has been a mixed bag, it surely paved the way for many important developments.
With an eye on the future, this edition of the corporate magazine reminisces the progressive stride of the year gone by, that will
hopefully inspire us to deliver and perform better in the coming future.
Issue 4: January 2014, Editor-in-Chief: Dhiraj Singh, Associate Editor: Roohie Menon, Editorial Assistance: Transcend Solutions
Printing: Print Point India Pvt. Ltd.
At the helm of the company: Dr. Steffen Berns
Taking on the mantle from Mr. V K Viswanathan is
Dr. Berns, regional President - Bosch Group in India, and
MD - Bosch Limited.
“It is important that we keep that hunger for growth,
innovation, quality and excellence in processes going,” -
Dr. Berns believes that we must not take our success for
granted as competition is only getting fiercer. His strategy
to move forward is to stay focused on agility, growth and
profitability to meet customer needs.
Dr. Berns sees India as a unique high-growth potential
market. “We have to really understand the market
requirements well, leverage on our good customer
relations with agility and speed, to conceive, develop and
introduce new products that meet customer expectations
in terms of spec, price and time-to-market. This means
innovation, with a special focus on cost-innovation,” he
says.
Dr. Berns is not new to India as he spent over four years
in the country from 1996 – 99, witnessing the effects of
liberalization on the Indian auto industry and economy
during the time. He was the first MD of the software
subsidiary Robert Bosch Business & Engineering Solutions
(then called RBIN). He was also closely associated with the
initial growth of Gasoline Systems division in India.

Mr. Viswanathan - ‘People are the key to success’
“I think it is important that we see the brighter side of
life and enjoy what we are doing, and find something that
captures our interests,” – Mr. V K Viswanathan, popularly
known as VKV tells us how important it is to stay self-
Vice-Chairman, after having an illustrious career with
Bosch Limited as the MD, and regional President - Bosch
Group in India. In 2012, he was also appointed as the
President of Indo-German Chamber of Commerce.
‘Value’ ble CEO of the year
motivated and live life to the fullest, rather than expect to
get motivated.
VKV continues his association with Bosch Limited as the
VKV’s calm, yet sharp and a reasonable disposition
reflects 'clarity'.
VKV emerged a winner at a time when India was in
the middle of an economic downward spiral. “There
is nothing that can stop you once you have decided on
pursuing your dreams” is a motto he shares with us.
results. The company expanded in diverse businesses
beyond automotive and showed double digit growth.
VKV believes in the tremendous potential of people.
“Ordinary people can achieve extraordinary feats, if
Mr. Viswanathan was declared as a ‘Value’able CEO of
supported by the right tools and training. Organizational
the Year’ by Business World - one of the most respected
success is not as much as about creating a team, but rather
business publications in India. Indeed, the last year
picking and putting together the right team.”
was economically challenging enough, both in India
and abroad. Yet, under his able leadership and effective
sustainable and profitable growth which yielded great

New beginnings
Bosch is a dominant player in the automotive sector in
India. Taking the same stance ahead, Bosch reaffirmed
its commitment to India in both automotive and nonautomotive
sectors. It is during the last year that the
businesses were strengthened further with investment
from Bosch to continue focus on sustainable growth.
Bosch Rexroth India’s new plant is design and
engineering hub
Substantial investment led to the expansion of automation
subsidiary Bosch Rexroth last year. Operations
commenced in a new high-tech manufacturing plant at
Sanand, Gujarat.
Mr. Andreas Pfundstein, then Head- Operations, Bosch
Rexroth India is proud of this achievement under whose
leadership the project became a reality. “To make this
plant a success it is important to increase the market share
of hydraulic business in India, and begin the production of
new products,” he said.
With this first-of-its-kind industrial facility in India, the
focus is to ramp up production to enable localization of
products and meet the increasing needs of the market. The
plant is also accelerating activities in close coordination
within its manufacturing network. The new plant
manufactures and provides services for a large variety of
the hydraulic products of Bosch Rexroth.
Longest conveyor project in one plant, anywhere in the
world
Rexroth India bagged the single largest order worldwide
for supply of Vario Flow Plastic Chain Conveyor systems
from Asian Paints, staving off stiff competition from some
of the biggest international names. The Vario Flow is used
for transporting and material handling applications to
processing stations. With an expected value of above INR
110 million, this application from Bosch is equated with
high performance, speed, sturdiness and a cost efficient
solution.
Electrical Drives
Subsidiary Bosch Electrical Drives India opened a new
facility in Oragadam, Chennai in 2013.
“This move to set up our own Bosch plant in Tamil
Nadu, further underlines our commitment to the Indian
automotive market. With the location in Chennai, we have
expanded our presence beyond our existing automotive
component manufacturing sites in Bangalore, Nashik,
Chakan and Jaipur. From the new plant, we will support
all Indian automotive customers with our innovative
products from electrical drives” said Dr. Berns during the
inauguration.
The new plant has given the required boost to answer the
demands of the market. The Electrical Drives business was
set up in India in 2008 as a joint venture, to stay in pace
with the needs of the global/local OE customers and their
future plans without compromising on technology, quality
and cost. The aim is to capitalize on the emerging growth
in the region.
For the nine months ended September 2013, Bosch
Packaging Technology and Energy Business continued its
Limited registered an overall growth of 1.7 percent on net
good growth during the same period. These divisions have
sales and income from operations at Rs. 6,564 crores. The
been gradually increasing their presence in the Indian
non-automotive segment, including Power Tools,
market.

Closing of Indo-German Urban Mela
Associates in focus
The Indo-German Urban Mela, started its epic journey in
Mumbai early 2012 and then toured Bangalore, Chennai
and Delhi. It ended its itinerary with the last showcase
in Pune early last year. The 10-day travelling exhibition
in Pune took place at the Deccan College Ground in
Yerawada, from January 11th to 20th. It was part of the
celebrations titled "Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite
Opportunities" to commemorate 60 years of Indo-German
diplomatic ties. The 12 specially designed pavilions came
to life with interactive presentations which showed how
the problem of cities could be addressed. This unique
German road show had over 3,70,000 visitors.
Women at Bosch pioneering change
There is a general notion that despite many positive
social changes, India remains a male-centric society. And
manufacturing industry even more so.
Diversity has contributed to the success of company. The
women at Bosch India are just a few among many women
who are pioneering change.
Inclusion of women at work place has become a key factor
in achieving national success. Bosch India understands
this issue and has taken measures to achieve a balance of
gender. Today the number of women employed at Bosch
locations in India is gradually increasing. Bosch India was
able to achieve a target of 23.1% of female hires out of the
total technical hires in the country.
Saritha Poovanna – the only woman heading a
manufacturing department at the Bangalore plant, and
the only woman in the common rail pump team, aptly
summarizes the changing times having joined Bosch over
14 years ago – “There is increased acceptability of women
in different roles and an understanding of the advantages
that a truly diverse team brings to the organization”.

Training and Development with the vision to create
‘glocal’ workforce
Bosch is increasing focus on Gen Y
Employee development is a critical focus at Bosch.
Training associates is part of a long-term investment
plan. Especially during difficult business times, such as
last year, the effective training programs worked towards
reinforcing the basics that helped associates understand
and cope with the swings of business.
generic to technical topics, with a good mix of theory
and practical sessions. Post FOCAS, the young associates
progress to Nurturing Young Talent (NYT) program,
through which they are integrated seamlessly into their
respective business units by exposing and nurturing their
‘passion for engineering’ through a mentor.
India is a country with a large number of young people,
especially the Generation Y (those born between 1981 and
2000). With 65 percent of its population under the age of
35, India has one of the largest available workforces in the
world. The contribution of this young talent is imperative
for India’s own development.
The aspiration to develop and take the country forward
also rests with the companies. Gen Y accounts for around
43 percent of the total white-collar population at Bosch
Limited. HR programs such as the Junior Management
Program (JMP) and the Technical Management Program
(TMT) help identify and understand the needs of Gen Y.
Yet, as Bosch transitions into a younger workforce,
Krishna A (RBIN/HRC RBIN/HRL), believes that
these changes can throw up both new challenges
and opportunities. He says, “One of the challenges
is to coordinate and harmonize the work of multiple
generations in the same workplace.” And this is a real
challenge.
Bosch Training Centre – ‘Fit for Future’
“In India, our vision works towards enabling managers in
becoming ‘glocal’ executives with Indian roots but global
leadership capabilities,” - says Krishna A elaborating on
Bosch India’s vision. The human resource function which
he heads offers around 271 training programs in the areas
of technical development and management as well as soft
skill building.
The Bosch Training Centre (BTC) is globally responsible
For associates in the mid- to senior level category,
the primary focus is on managerial and leadership
competencies. The premium - Executive General
Management Program (RK/GM) is designed to meet the
requirements of the senior management.
Mr. Krishna’s advice to associates is to plan career from
a long-term perspective, apart from acquiring expertise
in one domain, which could serve as a foundation when
assuming general management responsibilities. This is
definitely a message to take home.
for training and development activities across different
regions. The BTC-IN team looks to create value through
competitive, high quality and innovative training
solutions, while focusing on programs such as ‘innovation
beyond borders’ that place Bosch on the track of being ‘Fit
The future associate landscape of Bosch is going to be even
more gender diverse with the inclusion of women at all
levels, especially senior. More Gen Y enthusiasm will be
here to balance the tone of the middle-aged company.
for Future’.
Robust training programs
“The diversity at RBEI demands a robust landscape of
training and development to meet the wide spectrum
across technical domains, project management capability
and leadership/entrepreneurial mindset building,”
articulates Mr. Sathyanarayana T K (RBEI/HRL).
Software subsidiary RBEI has FOCAS (foundation course
for new associates) which includes trainings ranging from

Enterprise 2.0 - changing ways of
communication with collaboration
Bosch LeaderSpeak
The BI News Editorial Team had the opportunity to
connect with the global and local leadership team. Our
leaders shared with us their insights and strategies to take
Bosch forward.
of business’ compared to some other countries, is
extremely matter-of-fact oriented in India. That’s why the
support from customers and associates has been so very
rewarding.”
Dr. Bernd Bohr
Being responsible for India region, there is little that
escaped Dr. Bohr’s attention when it came to the auto
“Doing business
with an Indian
customer is
and
industry dynamics in the sub-continent. Foremost, Bohr
found that the optimism and openness to try something
new here in India with the positive stance to move forward
contrasts to the German culture. Indians see opportunity
first and then bump into problems.
long-term
oriented. It
needs some time
to build up the
relationship,
but once you
have it, and you
have a solid
Agile and foresighted, Dr. Bohr’s mind perfectly identifies
opportunities with a knack for fishing out the right details
and existing trends in the market. He insists that one can
very much learn here in India and then sell the technology
to the world - “The ECU which was developed for the
Tato Nano, with some changes to meet Euro 5 emission
requirements, is today in high-volume German cars.”
Expressions are virtual now
Digital tools have changed the way we communicate and
collaborate in our professional and personal lives. To
stay in tune with the times, Bosch has devised its own
enterprise solutions and joined the social media platform,
Enterprise 2.0 at Bosch
The corporate motto of E2.0 is to ensure faster, flexible,
direct and efficient communication and collaboration
between associates as well as with customers, partners
and other stakeholders.
performance,
you have a
pretty stable
business relationship. The ‘build a relationship kind
After serving as Member - Board of Management of Robert
Bosch GmbH, and Chairman – Automotive Group, Dr. Bohr
stepped down from his career with Bosch to move on to a
new phase in his life since the mid of last year.
both for the internal and external stakeholders.
While the advent of social media on the one hand is
decreasing genuine human face-to-face communication,
on the other it is also an enabler of revolutions!
Expressions are virtual – whether accolades or
complaints. Controlling conversations online is never a
possibility, but by being online, Bosch is participating and
showing that it is a company that cares.
Currently in the process of implementation, E2.0 will
inevitably transform Bosch into a highly connected
company. The arrival of E2.0 demands a paradigm shift in
the way we work. The change in culture calls for more trust
in each other, spirit to work together and find solutions by
collaborating.
Bosch Connect
Internally, the ‘Bosch Connect’ social business platform
will help increase efficiency and speed in collaboration
processes, extend internal dialogues to make strategic
decisions, and use creativity of Bosch associates for the
overall well-being of the company.
On the external front, Bosch India has tasted considerable
success and engaged conversations with the digital natives
on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
Franz Hauber
“Our
customers are
demanding high
performance
products and
quality, in-time
delivery, and
competitive
prices,” – says
Mr. Hauber
(RBIN/EM),
who took up the
responsibility
of the newly
established
function of
‘Determination’ and ‘initiative’ are Mr. Hauber’s marked
qualities. His natural technical orientation makes him very
shop floor orientated. It’s important for me to understand
the technical and business processes from bottom-up in
order to make appropriate decisions.”
“Open and transparent communication, including
feedback, is a key tool in my leadership style.” Mr. Hauber
is responsible for the functions of manufacturing, quality,
location projects, health, safety and environment, and
plant security matters for various business divisions.
Associated with Bosch for over a good 28 years, Mr.
Hauber has worked in various functions starting with
ABS hydraulics. Before moving to India, he headed the
Bamberg plant and the injector product team there.
Yet, the journey has to meet its destination Enterprise 2.0
as Bosch has a long way to go. Are you ready?
of ECUs were supplied for Tata’s Nano cars.
Despite the fact that the average electronic content per
vehicle in India is still less compared to European and
other markets, the demand for advanced engine control
and management systems, and superior safety systems
is increasing gradually in India as car manufacturers
demand components at competitive prices.
Emphasizing on Bosch’s technology localization
capabilities, Dr. Hildenbrand also added, “The automotive
Dr. Grobe is enthusiastic to take Bosch Rexroth India into
a vibrant future, as the MD of the subsidiary. He believes
that the onus to explore business in the domestic market
totally rests on the team as opportunities are ample.
“Investments in infrastructure projects, construction,
modernization and automation projects are well on track
in India.”
Citing the example of an electronic hitch control
developed by Bosch Rexroth India, Dr. Grobe points, “The
entire system including the software was developed in
India.” This system is more than a customized solution in
the market, where only mechanically controlled systems
are available at the moment.
The new technical centre at the plant in Sanand, Gujarat
now enables flexibility in production for customization
Bangalore and Nashik Plants –
forerunners of Bosch in India
Bangalore plant completes 60 glorious years
Taking the legacy and onus forward: Nashik plant
The Bangalore plant is almost as old as Bosch in India
itself. It is the first manufacturing base of Bosch in India,
constructed after the formation of company Mico*.
Tackling the government rules on imports and problems
faced by faulty local competitors, the plant started
manufacturing of spark plugs for petrol engines and fuelinjection
equipment for diesel engines under license from
Bosch in 1953. Boost to business came when the Indian
government called for locally made diesel stationary
combustion engines to irrigate Indian fields as part of the
First Five Year Plan. There was no looking back since then.
Production of delivery valves, nozzles and multi-cylinder
diesel-injection systems were the next in the line of
products. By the mid 70s, the plant exported spark plugs
to the Soviet Union, and multi-cylinder injection pumps to
engine manufacturers in Europe and the U.S. Apart from
automotive components, the Bangalore plant made efforts
to diversify by manufacturing special purpose machines in
1965, and Power Tools in the late 90s.
Except for the PF pump, gear pump and NG valves, all oldgeneration
products continue to be made at the Bangalore
plant. The plant was the first in India to rollout the new
generation common rail pumps in 2006.
Supply to the agrarian sector has been growing at a rapid
rate of 20 percent each year. At the end of 2012, Bosch had
a dominant share of 85 percent of the market by selling
around 0.96 million pumps, covering both OEMs and
aftermarkets.
When the Bangalore plant had reached its fullest capacity,
a pilot plant was set up as the second manufacturing site
in Nashik in 1969. In 1972, production of fuel injection
nozzles and nozzle holders began in full swing.
The Nashik plant has played an instrumental role in the
transformation of the predominantly agricultural town
into an industrial hub. The city is also home to several
other large corporations such as M&M, Ashok Leyland,
Eaton and Epcos.
In 2007, Nashik plant manufactured India’s first common
rail injector. Located in the Maharashtra Industrial
Development Corporation (MIDC), Sitapura campus, the
Nashik plant manufactures a host of components such as
nozzles and injectors for both classical and Euro series.
The Government of Maharashtra offers the plant investorfriendly
policies and a conducive climate for investment.
In the wake of improved diesel injection equipment
demand, Bosch invested Rs. 300 crores in 2012 to augment
the plant’s activities by increasing production space which
has resulted in a considerable headcount increase.
We strongly aspire to see our other manufacturing sites
achieve similar success in the near future.
