CELEBRATING OUR 2008–09 SEASON!
A Message from the Executive Director
Dear friends and colleagues:
Once again it is my pleasure to forward our annual newsletter describing our activities
during this past season, and what a season it was! Performances of the classic rock musical
Smokey Joe’a Café thrilled over 20,000 children throughout the metropolitan area, while
7,500 more participated in their own musical productions supervised by the Inside Broadway
Teaching Artist teams. For a grand finale to our season we presented our annual Broadway
Beacon Awards at The Players Club and honored the glamorous Tony Award winning
actress Laura Benanti, her husband actor Steven Pasquale and rock star and Tony nominee
Constantine Maroulis. We also were pleased to honor and recognize the longstanding service
by a member of our Board of Directors, Alan Momeyer, a Vice President at the Loews
Corporation.
With the arts under extreme pressure during these difficult economic times, we at Inside
Broadway remain committed to bringing outstanding arts and education programs to the school children of our city.
We thank you for your support of our mission. It is greatly appreciated, and now, on to the exciting 27th season of Inside Broadway.
Best wishes,
CELEBRATING OUR 2008–09 SEASON!
Inside Broadway Teaching Artist Residency Programs
in the Schools:
During the 2008-2009 season,
Inside Broadway provided
theatre education workshops
to over 40 schools in the five
boroughs. In addition to our flagship
program, “Build A Musical” in which
students learn the necessary skills such as
dance, voice and acting needed to present
their own musical, we also offer several
other theatre based workshops. In our
“Playwriting Now!” program students
worked under the direction of a dramaturg
to write their own plays and present them in
staged readings, our “Shakespeare Shake-Up”
taught students in grades 5 through 12
about the playwright, his plays, iambic
pentameter and the customs of the day.
Students enrolled in our “Folktales and
Dance Around the World” programs
learned about different cultures through
spoken word and the universal language
of dance. All of our programs meet the
New York City Department of Education’s
Blueprint for the Arts and the New York
State Standards for the Arts and are
tailored to meet each school’s specific
needs. As always, to ensure quality
instruction we employ theatre professionals
who possess degrees in theatre and
education. This year, our Teaching Artist
Residency Program reached over 7,500
students in grades K-12 citywide.
CELEBRATING OUR 2008–09 SEASON!
CASA (Cultural After-School Adventures program)
For the fourth year in a row, Inside Broadway dispatched its accomplished teaching artists to 14 public schools in
Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx for the Cultural After School Adventures (Casa Program).
Under the direction of Inside Broadway’s Program Director, Katie McAllister, students worked with 2 teaching artists
for two months building a musical presentation. The theme this year was “If My Friends Could See Me Now” and was
based on the question “If you could be doing anything right now, what would it be?” The students learned Broadway songs,
choreography, acting and vocal skills and helped to form the script through their responses to the music and theme. Students also
helped to paint the backdrop for the performance with materials supplied by Inside Broadway. In addition to their work with the
teaching artists, the students also worked with a professional musician in preparation for the final presentation in front of their
school and community. At the end of the program each student received an Inside Broadway certificate of completion on stage
in front of their friends and family.
Each CASA school also received a performance of Inside Broadway’s production of “Smokey Joe’s Café” for the entire school
to enjoy. Each student attending the performance received a copy of our specially prepared Study Buddy and participated in our
Q&A after the show. Between the workshop program and the school tour this program served over 7,000 children.
CELEBRATING OUR 2008–09 SEASON!
Industry Leaders, Inside Broadway Leading Lights
Meet two distinguished
members of the New York arts
community who have given
their time, vast experience
and expertise in the service of arts education
by serving with dedication on the Board of
Directors of Inside Broadway:
MARY LANDOLFI
President
Associated Musicians of Greater New York,
Local 802
Mary Landolfi has been a member of Local
802 for thirty-eight years and was elected
president of the local in December of 2006.
She graduated from Indiana University in
Bloomington, Indiana with a Performance
Certificate, a Bachelor of Music with
highest honors and a Master of Music with
highest distinction. She performed as
principal flute of the New Jersey Symphony
for ten years and of American Ballet
Theater for twenty years. After serving on
the negotiating committees for those
organizations, she became the financial
vice-president of Local 802 in 1994; in that
position she negotiated and administered
numerous collective bargaining agreements,
including Mostly Mozart, American
Ballet Theatre and the free-lance concert
orchestras. She also supervised the New
Organizing Department during the period
that Local 802 obtained recognition from
Starlight Orchestras and from the Jazz
and Contemporary Music program at the
New School. During her second term as
financial vice president, the Jazz department
was added to her responsibilities; in that
capacity Mary was successful in obtaining
full payment for musicians who played
“Harlem Nutcracker” after a two-year battle.
Mary says “It is my privilege and delight
to introduce children to the magic of
musical theatre – to understand the
importance of music to drama, and how a
musical work is created.”
JOHN DIAZ, SR.
Chairman, Board of Trustees
International Alliance of Theatrical Stage
Employees, Local One
John Diaz grew up in Brooklyn, New York,
and fell in love with show business when a
public school teacher, wanting to share
her love of theatre, took him to see a
production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s
South Pacific on Broadway. He says “She
was thrilled when, several years later, I told
her I was working behind the scenes on a
production of South Pacific at the Brooklyn
Academy Of Music.”
On March 23, 1970, he worked his first
day at The Metropolitan Opera House ,
where he is still “making it happen.” He has
also worked on other Local One venues:
“The Captain Kangaroo Show” at CBS,
“Sesame Street” at PBS and at The Palace
Theatre with the show, Woman of the Year.
John has given a wealth of service to
the industry; his positions include the
Vice Presidency of New York State Local
of Motion Pictures and Stage Crafts, and
a Senior Trainer in I.A.T.S.E. education.
John received the Greater New York Safety
Training Award.
Of his many years with Inside Broadway,
John says “It has been a great thrill for
me to return my teacher’s love for theatre
back to the children of New York City.
To see the children’s eyes as they watch
Smokey Joes Café, and to hear their screams
at Creating the Magic —it warms my heart
that my Local had something to do with this
great charity Inside Broadway and I hope it
always will.”
Broadway Star Visits Rising Stars of
Marine Park JHS 278 in Brooklyn!
On Monday June 24, 2009 Tony
nominated Broadway actor and
AMERICAN IDOL alumni
Constantine Maroulis made a
special appearance at JHS 278K in Marine
Park Brooklyn to visit with students. During
the visit, Constantine spoke with students
about the dedication and discipline required
to work on Broadway and the importance
of education. At this event, the students
performed a musical number for Constantine
and posed for pictures with the Broadway
star.
JHS 278, under the leadership of
Principal Debra Garofalo and her dedicated
staff is striving to provide students with
quality arts and education programming
through its music and theatre programs.
Through a partnership with Inside
Broadway, JHS 278 has produced two very
successful musical theatre productions and
attended several Inside Broadway theatre
events. This year, a group of talented 6th,
7th and 8th grade students performed at
Inside Broadway’s Broadway Beacon Awards
to much acclaim!
Constantine Maroulis is currently
appearing on Broadway in the musical
ROCK OF AGES, and is recipient of the
2009 BROADWAY BEACON AWARD
presented to him at the Inside Broadway
benefit at The Players Club on June 25, 2009.
