Advanced <strong>Education</strong>al Practice (AEP) Programme<br />
The AEP Programme <strong>of</strong>fers a framework to those who attend CPD courses at the <strong>IOE</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
wish to have their work accredited. It is a flexible, modular programme that can lead to the<br />
awards at certificate, diploma <strong>and</strong> MA levels. It is developed <strong>and</strong> designed to support CPD<br />
<strong>and</strong> the performance management cycle in educational settings. In addition to our existing<br />
accredited CPD (as listed in this brochure), participants who have attended other short<br />
courses <strong>of</strong> four days in length have the opportunity to gain accreditation by completing an<br />
Independent Study Module. This module involved completion <strong>of</strong> relevant reading <strong>and</strong> van<br />
essay or report using knowledge gained through the short courses attended. You will<br />
receive a tutorial with a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>IOE</strong> academic staff as well as written formative <strong>and</strong><br />
summative feedback on your assessed work.<br />
Participants<br />
The programme is designed for the wide range <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who work within an<br />
educational setting including pr<strong>of</strong>essionals supporting education such as social workers or<br />
specialist instructors. The programme also <strong>of</strong>fers a framework to those participants who<br />
bring accredited modules from other programmes within the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> such as<br />
PGCE participants.<br />

National Research <strong>and</strong> Development Centre for Adult Literacy<br />
<strong>and</strong> Numeracy<br />
NRDC is an independent centre working to improve practice <strong>and</strong> inform policy<br />
through research <strong>and</strong> development. It is widely recognised for its expertise in<br />
adult literacy, language <strong>and</strong> numeracy within Engl<strong>and</strong>. The research <strong>and</strong><br />
development projects completed for a range <strong>of</strong> different funders means that<br />

Science Learning Centre London<br />
Science Learning Centre London is based at the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> runs<br />
an extensive programme <strong>of</strong> CPD for science teachers <strong>and</strong> technicians, at all Key<br />
Stages. The Centre is part <strong>of</strong> a national network funded by the Department for<br />
<strong>Education</strong> to ensure all teachers <strong>and</strong> support staff have access to high-quality<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional development in science <strong>and</strong> related subjects (including maths,<br />
engineering <strong>and</strong> technology). Our courses cover curriculum development <strong>and</strong><br />
new initiatives, assessment, personalised learning, practical skills <strong>and</strong> supporting<br />
science teaching. We use the Centre‟s superb teaching rooms <strong>and</strong> laboratories<br />
but can also run courses in schools or other venues as part <strong>of</strong> our extensive<br />
outreach programme. Until the end <strong>of</strong> March <strong>2011</strong>, the Science Learning Centres,<br />
on behalf <strong>of</strong> the Department for <strong>Education</strong>, expect to <strong>of</strong>fer the Impact Award<br />
bursary <strong>of</strong> £200 per day for teachers, tutors <strong>and</strong> lecturers <strong>and</strong> £100 per day for<br />
technicians for many <strong>of</strong> our courses. Any teacher, tutor, lecturer or technician<br />
from a maintained school or college in Engl<strong>and</strong> may be eligible to apply for an<br />
Impact Award to help them cover the cost <strong>of</strong> attending certain courses at the<br />

Academics within the Department <strong>of</strong> Continuing <strong>and</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>Education</strong> can<br />

This department is the UK‟s principal centre for work in the foundation disciplines.<br />
As well as short courses <strong>of</strong>fered in this brochure the department is the only UK<br />
university department <strong>of</strong>fering specialist MA <strong>Education</strong> courses.<br />
The four disciplines outlined below all have modules which can be brought into<br />
the AEP programme described earlier or can provide a route to studying on a<br />
unique Master's programme at the UK's principal centre for the teaching <strong>of</strong><br />

History <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />
A specialist programme in histories <strong>of</strong> education <strong>and</strong> childhood, <strong>of</strong> interest to<br />
anyone working in the field <strong>of</strong> education. It engages with a wide range <strong>of</strong><br />
approaches to history-making, bringing together biographical research, oral<br />
history, visual sources <strong>and</strong> documentary research for the study <strong>of</strong> lives in<br />
educational settings. Learning will be participatory <strong>and</strong> use a range <strong>of</strong> formats <strong>and</strong><br />
media including: short lectures, film, problem-based group activities, guided<br />
discussion <strong>of</strong> selected readings, museum visits, urban walks <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s-on<br />
activities in London-based archives. It presents opportunities to participate in a<br />
vibrant learning community including a staff-student seminar series convened by<br />
the programme leader.<br />
Philosophy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />
A programme for those who care about education in the broadest sense <strong>of</strong> the<br />
word, who want to question current policies <strong>and</strong> practice, <strong>and</strong> examine underlying<br />
principles <strong>and</strong> assumptions. We build on the strengths <strong>of</strong> academic philosophy<br />
without assuming expertise in advance. You will explore how philosophy can<br />
illuminate educational questions both in its own right, <strong>and</strong> in the context <strong>of</strong><br />
interdisciplinary work. Our modules include: “Values, Aims <strong>and</strong> Society”,<br />

Social Justice <strong>and</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />
A programme exploring current national <strong>and</strong> global concerns about social justice,<br />
inclusion, rights <strong>and</strong> citizenship, <strong>and</strong> the role education can play in securing a<br />
more just society. Covering a broad range <strong>of</strong> educational <strong>and</strong> related social policy<br />
issues <strong>and</strong> is located in current debates about states, societies <strong>and</strong> social<br />
inequalities. The programme provides opportunities for participants to develop<br />
their own ideas <strong>and</strong> to pursue their own interests in the classroom, in written work<br />
<strong>and</strong> in the dissertation. Our modules include: “Justice: Contemporary Social<br />
Issues <strong>and</strong> Perspectives.”<br />
Sociology <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />
A programme situating education in its broad social context, using established<br />
<strong>and</strong> emerging sociological ideas to underst<strong>and</strong> contemporary issues <strong>and</strong> their<br />
wider social implications. With a focus on inequalities, identities, policy <strong>and</strong><br />
politics, the programme considers global <strong>and</strong> local concerns <strong>and</strong> the relationships<br />
between these. Taught by researchers at the forefront <strong>of</strong> the field, the programme<br />
<strong>of</strong>fers educators <strong>and</strong> those in allied areas a unique opportunity to develop new<br />
critical tools <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional insights. It is suitable for sociology graduates <strong>and</strong><br />
