Centres and Departments at the IOE 

Advanced Educational Practice (AEP) Programme 

The AEP Programme offers a framework to those who attend CPD courses at the IOE and 

wish to have their work accredited. It is a flexible, modular programme that can lead to the 

awards at certificate, diploma and MA levels. It is developed and designed to support CPD 

and the performance management cycle in educational settings. In addition to our existing 

accredited CPD (as listed in this brochure), participants who have attended other short 

courses of four days in length have the opportunity to gain accreditation by completing an 

Independent Study Module. This module involved completion of relevant reading and van 

essay or report using knowledge gained through the short courses attended. You will 

receive a tutorial with a member of IOE academic staff as well as written formative and 

summative feedback on your assessed work. 

Participants 

The programme is designed for the wide range of professionals who work within an 

educational setting including professionals supporting education such as social workers or 

specialist instructors. The programme also offers a framework to those participants who 

bring accredited modules from other programmes within the Institute of Education such as 

PGCE participants.

National Research and Development Centre for Adult Literacy 

and Numeracy 

NRDC is an independent centre working to improve practice and inform policy 

through research and development. It is widely recognised for its expertise in 

adult literacy, language and numeracy within England. The research and 

development projects completed for a range of different funders means that 

courses offered in this brochure through the centre are at the cutting edge of adult

Centre for Post-14 Research and Innovation 

This centre was formed in 2007 and aims to support the development of post-14 

education and training based on independent research and dialogue between 

practitioner, policy and researchers. Staff members teach on a range of IOE 

courses at all levels of study from a Foundation Degree in Lifelong Learning 

through diploma and MA awards and PhD students researching post-14

Science Learning Centre London 

Science Learning Centre London is based at the Institute of Education and runs 

an extensive programme of CPD for science teachers and technicians, at all Key 

Stages. The Centre is part of a national network funded by the Department for 

Education to ensure all teachers and support staff have access to high-quality 

professional development in science and related subjects (including maths, 

engineering and technology). Our courses cover curriculum development and 

new initiatives, assessment, personalised learning, practical skills and supporting 

science teaching. We use the Centre‟s superb teaching rooms and laboratories 

but can also run courses in schools or other venues as part of our extensive 

outreach programme. Until the end of March 2011, the Science Learning Centres, 

on behalf of the Department for Education, expect to offer the Impact Award 

bursary of £200 per day for teachers, tutors and lecturers and £100 per day for 

technicians for many of our courses. Any teacher, tutor, lecturer or technician 

from a maintained school or college in England may be eligible to apply for an 

Impact Award to help them cover the cost of attending certain courses at the

Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) 

Academics within the Department of Continuing and Professional Education can 

offer courses intended to help professionals in the FE and Lifelong Learning 

Sector reflect on their practice, develop new skills and familiarise themselves with 

recent research in the field. Courses offered recently have covered a wide range 

of themes including, approaches to personalised learning, the education of older 

learners, development of mentoring/coaching skills, prison education and the use 

of ICT in learning. 

The IOE‟s CPD offer can count towards the annual 30 hours of CPD required to 

maintain membership of the Institute of Learning. Those enrolling will receive 

certificates of attendance. Some courses form part of accredited provision and 

those completing can bank credit and opt to continue towards a full qualification, 

providing they satisfy the Institute's entry requirements and undertake the 

required assessment.

Educational Foundations and Policy Studies 

This department is the UK‟s principal centre for work in the foundation disciplines. 

As well as short courses offered in this brochure the department is the only UK 

university department offering specialist MA Education courses. 

The four disciplines outlined below all have modules which can be brought into 

the AEP programme described earlier or can provide a route to studying on a 

unique Master's programme at the UK's principal centre for the teaching of 

educational foundation disciplines. Participants will have access to the IOE‟s 

exceptional library facilities and teachers include global experts in the field.

History of Education 

A specialist programme in histories of education and childhood, of interest to 

anyone working in the field of education. It engages with a wide range of 

approaches to history-making, bringing together biographical research, oral 

history, visual sources and documentary research for the study of lives in 

educational settings. Learning will be participatory and use a range of formats and 

media including: short lectures, film, problem-based group activities, guided 

discussion of selected readings, museum visits, urban walks and hands-on 

activities in London-based archives. It presents opportunities to participate in a 

vibrant learning community including a staff-student seminar series convened by 

the programme leader. 

Philosophy of Education 

A programme for those who care about education in the broadest sense of the 

word, who want to question current policies and practice, and examine underlying 

principles and assumptions. We build on the strengths of academic philosophy 

without assuming expertise in advance. You will explore how philosophy can 

illuminate educational questions both in its own right, and in the context of 

interdisciplinary work. Our modules include: “Values, Aims and Society”, 

“Knowledge, Mind and Understanding”, “Theory and Policy in Education” and 

“Understanding Education Research”.

Social Justice and Education 

A programme exploring current national and global concerns about social justice, 

inclusion, rights and citizenship, and the role education can play in securing a 

more just society. Covering a broad range of educational and related social policy 

issues and is located in current debates about states, societies and social 

inequalities. The programme provides opportunities for participants to develop 

their own ideas and to pursue their own interests in the classroom, in written work 

and in the dissertation. Our modules include: “Justice: Contemporary Social 

Issues and Perspectives.” 

Sociology of Education 

A programme situating education in its broad social context, using established 

and emerging sociological ideas to understand contemporary issues and their 

wider social implications. With a focus on inequalities, identities, policy and 

politics, the programme considers global and local concerns and the relationships 

between these. Taught by researchers at the forefront of the field, the programme 

offers educators and those in allied areas a unique opportunity to develop new 

critical tools and professional insights. It is suitable for sociology graduates and 

non-specialists.
