Tom Dickman, First Vice
Chairman of the Washoe
County Republican Central
Committee, is now interim
chairman until the April meeting
of the WCRCC.
In a surprise moment at the
end of the January meeting of
the WCRCC, Tom Taber announced
his resignation, as
chairman. He stated he decided
to resign for personal reasons
and wanted to make it
possible for someone new to
have time to reposition for the
coming elections.
DICKMAN:
“WHAT I BELIEVE”
President Abraham Lincoln
referred to our country as “...
the last best hope of earth.”
President Ronald Reagan often
referred to our country as
“...the shining city on the
hill...”. I believe they were
both right.
I want to take this opportunity
to share with you my political
beliefs, and I think I can
best accomplish that with
some quotes I’m sure you’ll
recognize.
*“In Philadelphia, outside
Independence Hall, a woman
asked, ‘Well Doctor, what
have we got, a republic or a
monarchy’ Benjamin Franklin
replied, ‘A republic, madam,
if you can keep it’”.
*“Government is not reason;
it is not eloquent; it is
force. Like fire, it is a dangerous
servant and a fearful
master.” George Washington
*“Liberty once lost ... is lost
forever.” John Adams
*“I am for preserving to the
States the powers not yielded
by them to the Union.” Thomas
Jefferson
*“A long habit of not thinking
a thing wrong gives it a
superficial appearance of being
right.” Thomas Paine
*“No one’s life, liberty or
property is safe when the legislature
is in session.” Mark
Twain
*“History does not entrust
the care of freedom to the
weak or timid.” Dwight D.
Eisenhower
*“Extremism in the defense
of liberty is no vice. And moderation
in the pursuit of justice
is no virtue.” Barry Goldwater
*“Freedom is never more
than one generation away
from extinction.” Ronald Reagan
These are but a very few of
the statements over the past
238 years that form the basis
of my personal political beliefs.
I believe in liberty and
the initiative of the individual,
not the power and authority of
government.
First and foremost, I’m a
believer in the Constitution
and the Bill of Rights. Secondly,
I’m a conservative. And
thirdly a Republican. A Republican
who is proud of the
principles of lower taxes,
smaller government and personal
liberty. And a Republican
who is not willing to compromise
on those principles.
I believe the Republican
Party is, at the moment, the
only viable party able to promote,
preserve and protect
those principles that made this
the greatest country in the history
of the earth.
But, sadly, I also believe the
Republican Party is in danger
of losing its identity and the
ability to effectively implement
those principles. I believe
the Party has been far too
silent for far too long. I believe
the Party has allowed itself to
be defined by the Democrats,
the press and others, and has
not had either the courage or
the determination to reply. I
believe the Republican Party
must find its voice and proudly
proclaim and promote its
principles. I believe the Party
has the responsibility of holding
the sacred trust of all Republicans,
who are Republican
for a reason; that reason
being they believe in low tax-
SAME SEX
MARRIAGE
Ray Hagar Gazette-Journal
Feb. 12, 2014
The big news so far this week is the
state of Nevada will no longer defend the
state’s ban on same-sex marriage before a
federal appeals court. Recent court rulings
have turned Nevada’s defense of traditional
marriage into a bowl of mush.
“Case law over the last year and a half
has completely turned our argument upside
down,” state Attorney General Catherine
Cortez Masto said Tuesday during a
taping of the “Nevada Newsmakers” TV
show.
The concept that marriage is only between
a man and a woman seems to be
crumbling nationally. Nevada has raised
the white flag in the 9th Circuit Court, and
same-sex marriage proponents are winning
legal battles across the nation.
In a one-month span from December to
January, two federal judges struck down
state bans on gay marriage. Seventeen
states now have same-sex marriage protections.
KARL MARX
“The oppressed are allowed once every
few years to decide which particular representatives
of the oppressing class are to
represent and repress them.”
“The philosophers have only interpreted
the world in various ways: the point, however,
is to change it.”
“Religion is the opiate of the masses.”
“Sell a man a fish, he eats for a day,. Teach
a man how to fish, you ruin a wonderful
business opportunity.”
“History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second
as farce.”
MARIAN BOND REPUBLI-
CAN WOMEN OF RENO
In 1949 Republican Women of Reno
was formed, and for 65 years has been a
strong leader in Washoe County supporting
Republican ideals, candidates, and educating
members. The club will be celebrating
this momentous year with a special
party in July. We will be inviting all Washoe
County Women’s Clubs to join us as we
honor our past and current leaders and
65th birthday. We will also recognize present
and past leadership in all the other Federated
organizations.
This year the club has dedicated our
programming toward important issues and
highlighting candidates. We had a very
successful candidate forum in January
where we had Assemblyman Randy Kirner,
and candidate Lisa Krasner on the platform
to share their views.
In February we brought in John Eppolito,
and Steve Coe, and the subject was
the Common Core State Standards. Our
members now are well informed on this
controversial issue involving the education
of our children. We send our thanks to
John and Steve for their valuable program.
March will again serve as our time to
present important candidate views with a
Forum featuring Sue Lowden, who served
as a Nevada State Senator and State Senator
Mark Hutchison. Both are running for
Lieutenant Governor of Nevada. This will
provide an excellent opportunity to learn
their positions on this elective office.
Luncheon meetings are held on the second
Thursday of each month, and commence
at 11:30 am. The venue is Atlantis
Casino Resort Spa. Reservation line is
866-806-5501. Price is $20 with reservation,
$25 for walk-ins. All are welcome…..
Promoting transparency in government
has long been at the core of (Nevada Public
Not only do we citizens have a right to
know how our government operates and
how it spends our money, but that information
is essential to making wise judgments
in public policy. Feb. 4, 2014
es, restrained government and personal
I do not believe the Republican Party
should move to the left after the election
defeats in 2012. Sadly, there are those who
are determined to move the Party to the left
in the hopes of winning future elections.
But in doing so, the party will compromise
its own principles, lose its identity and become,
in essence, nothing more than a minor
league Democrat party.
Finally, the 19th century philosopher
Friedrich Nietzsche said “There are no
facts, only interpretations.” Personally,
I’m not on board with that statement at all.
But I suspect it may be not only convenient,
but true and taken to heart for those
who would urge Republicans to move to
the left. I hope you’ll join me in keeping
Washoe County truly Republican, and far,
far away from the left.
FROM SENATOR
DON GUSTAVSON
Recently, I sent a survey of 25 questions
to my newsletter subscribers. A question
was asked, “Do you support repealing
the current Silver State Exchange law
that implements a government run
healthcare system in Nevada” More than
500 of you weighed in on the question, and
the result was osignificant: 8.6% were undecided
or had no opinion and 9.4% opposed
disarming the program.
But an outstanding 81.9% of you agreed
that the Silver State Exchange needed to
be taken down! Your voice is heard. What
to do then?
GOP CONVENTION
Feb. 12th, 2014 Michael McDonald-
Chairman, Nevada Republican Party
The Nevada Republican Party is
pleased to announce that at the 2014 Nevada
Republican Convention in Las Vegas
this April 12th and 13th, delegates will cast
their ballots in a Presidential Preference
Poll for the 2016 election.
Nevada is proud to host the “First in the
West” Caucus in early 2016, and with the
Presidential Preference Poll at our convention
we’re continuing our role as a leader
in grassroots empowerment in the Republican
Party. The poll will be conducted by
secret ballot, and because privacy of the
vote is assured, results of this poll will express
the will of regular Nevada Republicans,
free from the influence of pundits or
professional political consultants..
The convention delegates will be selected
by tens of thousands of their fellow
Nevada Republicans at the neighborhood
precinct meetings and county conventions
across the state in the coming weeks.
I encourage all Nevada Republicans to
go to your precinct meetings, get involved
and participate, including taking the opportunity
to become a county convention
delegate and possibly a delegate to the
state convention where this vote will take
place.
For information about your county’s
precinct meetings and county convention,
contact your local GOP central committee
- contact information is here. You can also
contact us by replying to this email, and
we’ll connect you with someone near you
that can help you get involved.
I look forward to meeting you in person
at the Nevada Republican State Convention
THE DEM REPORT
RGJ by Ray Hagar Feb. 23, 2014
The Reid Machine’s engine was revved
up for the first time this year on Saturday,
as county caucuses of the Nevada Democratic
Party were held across the state in
preparation for the 2014 election.
The Washoe County Democratic Caucus
at Wooster High School, drew a estimated
crowd of more than 250. The crowd
shocked Mary Connelly, the state director
for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry
Reid, D-Nev.
Reid has made it his goal to have a fully
funded and efficient state Democratic Party,
thus the nickname, the “Reid Machine.”
(ED NOTE: Where does the money come
from to promote these programs? Is it local?
Is it from Reid’s warchest? Just wondering!)
Nevada is considered a battleground
state, though Democratic President
Barack Obama has carried it in the past
two presidential elections.
Connelly was surprised so many attended
the Washoe caucus, since it is a nonpresidential
year.
“We didn’t do any betting on how many
people would come,” Connelly told the
crowd. “But let me tell you, based on the
numbers we were throwing around, we
would have all lost. You completely blew
us out of the water.”
The goal of the caucus was to choose
delegates to the upcoming Washoe County
Democratic convention. Yet it was also a
forum for some of Nevada’s lesser-known
Democratic candidates.
OH YES. AND IN ANOTHER STORY
BY RAY HAGAR FEB 23 IN THE RGJ:
(Nevada Senator Harry) Reid said
someone else is already lined up to run
for the Democrats. But he would not name
Nevada’s new challenger to Sandoval.
“I’ve had a number of conversations,
and we will fill every one of our spots,”
Reid said.
“We are going to be competitive in all
of the state offices –– from controller up to
governor,” Reid said.
Reid would give no hints on who the
new Democratic gubernatorial candidate
will be, even if he lived in Northern or
Southern Nevada.
elsewhere in the universe is that it has
never tried to contact us. ~Bill Watterson,
PERS PAYOUTS
NPRI February 13, 2014
Chantal Lovell, 702-222-0642
PERS information now available,
searchable on TransparentNevada
LAS VEGAS — Nevada PERS pension
payouts for January 2014 are now online
and searchable by name at TransparentNevada,
the Nevada Policy Research Institute
announced today. For the first time, the
searchable database at TransparentNevada.
com/nvpers will allow taxpayers to easily
see how much money former government
employees are collecting from Nevada’s
taxpayer-backed and woefully underfunded
Public Employees’ Retirement System.
The database features retired employee
names, January 2014 gross payout amounts
and projected 2014 total payout amounts,
calculated by multiplying the January payout
by 12.
Despite a recent Supreme Court ruling
that PERS payouts, retiree names and other
pertinent information, including retirement
dates, years of service and job titles are
public record, PERS continues to defy public-records
requests from NPRI and others
and has only provided data for January
2014.
On TransparentNevada, users will find
that 1,054 past workers are poised to receive
more than $100,000 this year in their
retirement payouts from the Public Employees’
Retirement System. Another
10,755 are on pace to take in more than the
state’s median household income of
$54,083. Over half of the 49,073 retirees
collected more than $2,642, the maximum
monthly Social Security benefit for someone
retiring at 66. And PERS retirees can
begin collecting in their 50s or even their
40s.
An analysis of the data reveals many reasons
for concern over “spiking” — the
practice by which public employees inflate
their pay during their final year, two or
three to inflate their reirement pay.
PAT CADDELL: The establishment Republicans
want the IRS to go after the Tea
Parties. Got it? They want to go after the
Tea Parties because the Tea Parties are an
outside threat to their power hold, and I’m
telling you, the lobbying, consulting class
of the Republican Party and Republican
leadership who have been attacking the Tea
Parties and alienating them, they want the
IRS to do this. From Rush Limbaugh
VOTING PROCESS
By Bob LeGoy
In a story in the Reno Gazette-Journal
February 16, 2014 by Ray Hagar he reports
Sharron Angle claims voter fraud is
rampant in the United States.
As a long-time member of the Washoe
County Election Certification Board I am
familiar with how it works in Washoe
County’s computer system.
First it is important to know there is no
connection with other computers anywhere.
It is only Washoe County’s voting
system. This is an obvious necessity.
Second there is a very important effort to
make sure each voting place ballot is fully
vetted to make sure it is correct, checked
and rechecked.
Before an election voting machines are
examined to make sure they are in working
order. Since each has a battery they are
charged 24-7 and occasionally need to be
replaced. These jobs are filled by trained
workers to make sure they are ready to receive
the voting program.
Once the machines are ready the programs
are installed by the trained workers
and it is time for the certification board
members to check a Secretary Of State
-mandated sample of the machines for accuracy
of voting ballots.
Then after the election the certification
board members are again called upon to be
sure results are true. And since there is a
paper trail on the voting machines the voter
can see his or her results and approve or
change their vote to agree with their
choice. When the certification board meets
after the election a mandated percentage of
machines are checked against these voter
agreed paper votes. And as a member of
certification board I have never seen an error.
As far as the allegation by Sharron Angle,
there is fraud I cannot say dead people
or those who moved without changing address,
have not voted. And, of course, this
is where fraud can more easily take place.
To me, it seems strange photo ID is not a
part of the process because you go almost
anywhere today and someone demands to
be shown photo ID.
In my opinion photo ID is necessary to
insure integrity to the voting process.
RENO’S FINANCES
Reno Gazette-Journal January 27, 2014
From a story written
by Anjeanette Damon
Last month, when the Reno City Council
voted to sell off a piece of land at a loss
to rescue one of its bonds from default,
more than one council member said their
motivation to back the deal was driven by
the desire to keep Reno from becoming “a
Detroit,” which filed for bankruptcy last
year.
Reno may not be on the brink of insolvency,
but it is facing some pretty significant
financial challenges, not the least of
which is the fact its overall debt load is
nearly nine times what it was 15 years ago.
Here are five things that should concern
you about the City of Reno’s finances:
1) Reno is cash strapped.
2) Reno is leveraged to the hilt.
3) Train trench bonds are a house of
cards.
4) Reno is not socking money away to
pay retirement benefits.
AND 5) Reno’s not socking money
away to pay workers’ compensation benefits
either.
WHO IS MARK
HUTCHISON?
By Andrew Doughman, Las Vegas Sun
Friday, Sept. 27, 2013 |
Gov. Brian Sandoval tapped first-term
Nevada State Senator Mark Hutchision as
his chosen running mate, saying earlier
this year Hutchison
would make a “tremendous”
lieutenant governor.
Hutchison, a 50-yearold
litigator can recount
his credentials and recite
his appreciation for education,
job creation and supporting small
business like any political candidate.
“I’m very much the product of a bluecollar
environment and very hardworking
parents,” he said. “I grew up in a very traditional
LDS home and lifestyle. Church
was very important to us and a very big
part of our life, and continues to be now.”
His dad, Garry, would tell his son to keep
his head down, work hard and get an education.
A self-described hard-charging, Type-A
Bonanza High School grad, Hutchison
scrapped his way through law school at
Brigham Young University, started his
own law firm, represented Nevada in a
multistate lawsuit to overturn “Obamacare,”
got elected to the state Senate and,
in July, announced he’s ready to lead the
state.
“Gov. Sandoval and I have a history of
teaming up together and supporting and
defending Nevada’s constitutional rights
and legal rights,” he said.
After 2014, Hutchison said, they would
continue to be a team: Sandoval, the former
federal judge at the helm, and Hutchison,
the bulldog litigator on deck.
If Sandoval wins re-election, there’s a
chance the popular Hispanic governor
might again ascend to the national stage.
Sandoval might even challenge Sen. Harry
Reid, D-Nev., when Reid is up for re-election
in 2016.
IT’S NOT OVER
Reno Mayor Race Still Up In The Air - Reno Gazette-Journal Feb. 26, 2014
Former Councilwoman Jessica Sferrazza has asked the Nevada Supreme Court
to reconsider its ruling banning term-limited council members from running for
mayor, saying the court was pressured to issue an expedited ruling before candidate
filing opens on March 3.
The court’s ruling last week abruptly ended Sferrazza’s campaign for mayor. She
is now arguing that the court did not consider a list of precedent setting cases in its
opinion.
“After conferring with my attorneys, who have analyzed last week’s decision
carefully, there appear to be relevant Supreme Court precedent regarding candidate
eligibility cases that merit bringing to the court’s attention for reconsideration,”
Sferrazza said in a brief interview. “This was an expedited case decided under the
pressure of the candidate filing deadline and the issues to be resolved in this matter
are of enough public importance to make sure all aspects of the case receive appropriate
deliberation.”
REP.MARK AMODEI
From the Reno Gazette-Journal
Ray Hagar, February 26, 2014
REP. MARK AMODEI, of Nevada’s
2nd U.S. House district, has been in Congress
since defeating (Nevada State Treasurer
Kate) Marshall in 2011. He’s said he
has become frustrated by the “political
sport” in Washington, D.C.
“There are a lot of people who are obsessed
with the political sport,” Amodei,
R-Carson City, told the RGJ editorial
board last week. “I sometimes refer to it as
the culture. But it is political sport where
it’s like, ‘I want to beat you on this issue so
I can go out and politically say I’m here or
I’m there or I’ve won.’ Meanwhile, back at
the ranch, the barn is burning down on an
issue.’”
Amodei gave two examples — immigration
reform and the Yerington land-transfer
bill.
The biggest frustration is that there is a
heck of a lot of effort and energy focused
on political sport in the time I’ve been
there,” Amodei said. “And even if you
win, where is your trophy?”
MANY CANDIDATES
Reno Gazette Jurnal Februart 26, 2014
By Brian Duggan
With last week’s Nevada Supreme
Court’s decision killing the mayoral candidacies
of former Councilwoman Jessica
Sferrazza and Councilman Dwight Dortch,
several local politicos have expressed interest
in the position.
While filing for the office doesn’t start
until Monday, here’s a look at some of the
notable names suddenly coming out of the
woodwork to take on declared candidates
Eddie Lorton and Chuck Reno:
• Barry Breslow, Reno lawyer and cousin
of former Sparks mayor Bruce Breslow
• Reno City Councilwoman Hillary
• Dan Gustin, former Reno City Councilman
• Reno Councilwoman Neoma Jardon
LINCOLN DAY
DINNER
The Washoe County Republican Party
held its Lincoln Day
Dinner on Valentine’s
Day, February 14th at
the Tuscany Ballroom
at the Peppermill Resort
Casino. Every table
was filled as supporters
LARS LARSON
met candidates, enjoyed
a formal meal and competed
for enticing auction items.
Lars Larson, syndicated talk show radio
host was the keynote speaker.
Republican Unity was a theme heard
throughout the evening. Reaching out to
a more diverse voter base and shared concerns
for cementing Republican election
results were sentiments expressed by every
attendee interviewed.
Socializing and discussions with the
many, many candidates present was a major
focus. The evening’s highlight included
a stirring speech from Lars Larson, popular
national talk show host.
Major donors were honored, and the final
auctions items were redeemed.
It was a successful fundraising event for
the upcoming electoral season.
TOM TABER
Here it is March already. In just nine
months we will be completing our General
Election ballots (sooner if you vote early)
and hoping that we have managed to
change the balance of power at the national
level. At least that appears to be the level
of focus. Not saying that by holding on to
the House of Representatives and managing
to be the majority party in the U.S.
Senate isn’t a good idea and a wonderful
goal, but let us take a look a little closer to
home shall we?
The Democrats currently hold four of
our six Nevada Constitutional offices. We
do have an opportunity this year to make it
a clean sweep for Republicans. After all,
an Attorney General who will look after
the needs of our fine State would be a clear
pleasure from that of the current holder of
that office. Having a Secretary of State
who is interested in the welfare of our political
world via the protection of our voting
rights and privileges would be an inspiration
to ensure that all legal Nevada
citizens were the only ones voting in our
elections. To have the Treasurer’s position
inhabited by someone who actually understands
finance would be a great pleasure.
It would be a boost to Nevada to finally
have someone who actually desires to uphold
the position of Nevada Comptroller
and function in that position for the benefit
of Nevadans.
A change of one seat currently held by
Democrats in the Nevada Senate to a Republican
candidate will provide control of
that body to Republicans. This will be a
big assistance in keeping our State from
following California into the socialistic
pit. Moving the State Assembly toward
Republican control is a bit more challenging
as we are down by 27-15, which is a 12
member deficit. BUT, if we pick up three
seats in the Assembly, 2014 will change
the numbers to 24-18. By working hard in
2016 we can pick up another three seats
making the numbers tie at 21-21. This
would be a grand improvement! Who
knows; we might even find that by 2016
we can achieve 20-22 and by golly we
have control! Why is control so darn important?
Because without control under
the rules of the Legislature, we do not chair
any committees, our bills are not heard and
we are not allowed to bring legitimate testimony
to the hearings.
SO! Let us all learn about our 2014
Republican candidates. The close of filing
for office is March 14th. Get behind your
picks in the Primary elections! Most importantly
get behind the Republican candidate
in the general election following our
June primaries. The top of the ballot is
important but every other office on the ballot
is also important; judges, school board,
city offices, etc.! Don’t stop voting until
you have voted to ensure Republican ideas
and ideals throughout the entire ballot.
Remember, there is no such thing as a nonpartisan
position! Tom
It really is up to the other branches of government
to stand up when their power is
being usurped, when they are, in essence,
being violated. But nobody in Congress is.
The Democrats in Congress love it. The
Republicans in Congress are paralyzed.
The Republicans in Congress must think
that the American people are perfectly fine
with Obama breaking the law or doing
anything -- and if anybody criticizes him,
why, they’re gonna be made to pay at the
next election. Rush Limbaugh Feb 12,
ROBERTS RULES OF
ORDER-MARCH 6
“Forget about the National Guard, send us
a Parliamentarian”
Maintaining a majority opinion while
respecting the right of the minority to attempt
to sway the opinions of the group is
the most important part of using parliamentary
procedures. When people feel
they haven’t even been heard or haven’t
been heard correctly, things may become
heated.
This is why learning the basics of Robert’s
Rules of Order are so important, especially
now since both the County and State
Conventions are coming up soon.
I will be conducting the same, Free Parliamentary
Procedure Workshop, twice on
Thursday, March 6, 2014 from 11:00am to
1:00pm and again from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
The workshop will take place at the
Washoe County Republican Party Headquarters
located at 3652 S. Virginia Street,
Suite C-8, in Reno, Nevada. There will be
a Power Point Presentation and handouts.
Seating is limited and will be done on a
first come first serve basis.
I am currently the President of the First
Nevada Unit of the National Association
of Parliamentarians and also the Parliamentarian
for both the Nevada State Republican
Party and the Washoe County
Republican Party. I have presented several
workshops in the past and served as parliamentarian
at several state conventions for
various organizations.
“The spirit of encroachment tends to consolidate
