What they’re saying
Programme
‘
Journalism is under pressure, not only from tighter
finances but also from the impact of the Internet,
the need for ratings and the fear of libel. I’m looking
forward to hearing what our panellists have to
say about how we protect what we do and how
we ensure the public gets the information it wants
and needs. Sarah Montague (Session I)
www.ipiworldcongress.com
‘
At a time of massive change in the media, we need to work harder
than ever to protect freedom of expression and freedom of the
press from burdensome regulation. Key to this will be our ability
to show that the media remains committed to a strong ethical
code… It is crucial that influential bodies like the IPI address this,
which is why I am looking forward to this important conference.
Guy Black (Session V)
Journalists will probably never come to a consensus
on how to report on extremists... A positive thing is
that we will get together in September and look for ‘answers. Sergej Danilov (Session VI)
‘
Right now there’s a fundamental shift, an evolution
taking place throughout the media landscape.
Social media and mobile technology have proven
their worth – this panel will demonstrate how and
forecast where it goes from here.
Errol Barnett (Session II)
‘
I believe that the ethics of
journalism should not be
compromised due to techno
logical changes or the
emergence of social media.
… It is perfect timing to have
a thoughtful discussion about
ethics and journalism.
Ghada Oueiss (Session V)
What I like about the Congress, is it’s a gathering of journalists and others who recognize the problem, define
the problems and clearly state what the problem is, and then explore some possible solutions. … Honest,
decent-intending people getting together at a session such as the Congress to discuss these matters, I think is
not only to be applauded, it is a necessity, which is one reason why I have agreed to fly halfway around the world
‘to do whatever I can… to contribute to it. Dan Rather (Session VII)
In an increasingly fragmented world, it is essential
for media to bring together the whole picture.
If we fail to do so, we fail our audiences. Therefore, ‘we must join forces! Elmar Thevessen (Session I)
The traditional approaches to issues of media ethics, standards and accountability have been called
dramatically into question by the emergence of the Internet as a potent social and informational
medium. This is why the Congress’s focus on new media – and its panel on media ethics in particular –
‘has identified some of the key issues facing media today. John Horgan (Session V)
“Lost News? Is the Media Still Providing
the Public with the Information It Needs?”
As print and broadcast organisations cut costs
and try to adapt to a changing media landscape –
often reducing newsroom staff and closing
foreign bureaus in the process – will they still
be able to cover the news in depth? Will they
be able to provide the public with the information
it needs to understand complex issues and make
informed decisions? What are the implications
for press freedom?
accurate, or unverified? Do both new and traditional
journalists risk becoming pawns in the public relations
60 Years of
Defending Press Freedom
Symbols of courage in journalism
60 Years of
Supporting Media Innovation
Covering the ever-changing media landscape
At a special Gala Dinner and Award Ceremony, which will be held on Monday, 13 September,
at Vienna’s historic City Hall, or Rathaus, IPI will honour 60 World Press Freedom Heroes to mark
60 years of defending press freedom.
‘
IPI’s World Press Freedom Heroes are courageous men and women who have made a
significant contribution to the defence and promotion of press freedom in their region or
country. Many of them paid the ultimate price, murdered for what they wrote or said.
David Dadge, IPI Director
1950s
1960s
The first 50 Press Freedom Heroes were selected in 2000 on the occasion of IPI’s 50th anniversary.
Two additional Heroes – Hrant Dink of Turkey and Anna Politkovskaya of Russia – were named
posthumously in 2006 and 2007, respectively.
In the run-up to the IPI World Congress in September, IPI will unveil one new Hero every month
to make up the full 60. All living Heroes will be invited to the award ceremony in Vienna.
1970s
The first of the new Heroes to be announced by IPI
was Lasantha Wickrematunge, the brave editor
of the Sri Lankan daily newspaper, The Sunday Leader,
who was murdered in 2009.
In March, Lebanese journalist and television
anchor May Chidiac was named
the 54th IPI World Press Freedom Hero.
Lydia Cacho, a Mexican investigative journalist
and human rights activist, was announced as the
55th Hero in April.
To read their biographies, and those of the other
Heroes, visit the IPI website: www.freemedia.at
An attractive, full colour commemorative book,
featuring the stories of all 60 Heroes, testimonials
and anecdotes from colleagues and relatives,
photographs, previously unpublished material,
and much more, will be presented at the
World Congress.
You can also learn more about IPI’s many press
freedom activities around the globe, and what we
are doing to further and safeguard press freedom
and freedom of expression, on the same website.
