2012–2013 ANNUAL REPORT
It’s not about
forcing a fit
It’s about finding a place
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends
2013 was a year of progressive transition at the
Pathway School. I’d like to thank long-time board
member, Dr. Edmond Watters, who served as interim
President prior to my appointment. During his
ten-month tenure, the Pathway School continued
to build on its strategic goals of improving our
curriculum offerings; especially in the area of reading
readiness, and expanding vocational opportunities
for our older students. In addition, enrollment in
Pathway’s Emotional Support program grew by
more than 20 percent.
Many thanks to our various community business
partners, who provide employment opportunities
for Pathway students. During the past year, 85
students worked at eighteen different businesses
in the surrounding area. Additionally, The Pathway
School was able to leverage state funding through
the Education Improvement Tax Credit program to
offer creative social skill building programs to our
neediest students during the summer of 2013.
Throughout this year’s Annual Report, you will read
of our many success stories, students’ academic
progression, productive worksite experiences, and
about several grants we received from private
foundations this year that are helping to transform
our program offerings.
THROUGHOUT THIS
YEAR’S ANNUAL
REPORT, YOU WILL
READ OF OUR MANY
SUCCESS STORIES.
As the new Chief Executive of the Pathway School
I am focused on the development of innovative
programs to augment the high quality, caring
education provided by our dedicated staff. I
will also be working to establish even more
partnerships with businesses and organizations in
the community to afford more of our students the
experience of meaningful vocational opportunities,
thereby raising the image of our fine school.
Thank you for your generous support. A school like
Pathway cannot survive without care and support
from its many community partners.
I look forward to speaking with our many
stakeholders, to hear your thoughts and ideas and
to share the vision we have for the Pathway School
in the years to come.
Sincerely,
David J. Schultheis
READING PROGRAM FUNDED THROUGH CDF
Increasing reading and comprehension skills is
one of the most important daily missions at the
Pathway school. With funding through the Child
Development Foundation (CDF), our students will
have the opportunity to improve their reading
comprehension skills. Many students come to
Pathway with significant reading deficits. CDF funds
have facilitated the purchase of the PCI Education
Reading Program. This program is designed
to help special education teachers integrate a
developmentally appropriate reading curriculum
with personalized, differentiated instruction for
each student in the classroom. The PCI Reading
Program is a research-based curriculum created
specifically to teach students with intellectual or
developmental disabilities, autism and significant
learning disabilities to read. Designed as a threelevel
system, the program takes non-readers on a
step by step process through whole-word, visual
discrimination and basic word decoding. This creates
a solid foundation that will help students become
more independent and successful readers as they
learn to identify and comprehend more words. The
PCI Reading program encourages students to grow
in confidence and become lifelong readers.
OUTCOMES REPORT
The Pathway School has completed its second outcome report on service delivery effectiveness this academic
year. Student academic learning gains were examined in Reading, Math, and Science using the results of three
distinct measurement procedures:
• State achievement tests, administered annually each spring;
• A benchmark and progress monitoring system, administered at frequent intervals throughout the school
year;
• Diagnostic evaluations, administered in the fall and spring.
Students’ social and emotional progress was also assessed with the use of standardized assessments at the
beginning and end of the school year. This was supplemented with the analysis of multiple behavior indicators
collected through daily data compilation. Lastly, students’ vocational growth was also examined using a nonstandardized
tool that assessed their employability and executive functioning skills that are necessary for
successful employment. These assessments were administered in the fall and spring.
Overall, the results and findings of both the Emotional Support (ES) and Therapeutic Academic programs (TAP)
were very promising. In the ES program, all students (100%) advanced between one and two years in their
reading ability. There was a 61% reduction in physical holds in the program, a significant improvement. In the
TAP program, PASA reading and math results were better in 2012 than in previous years. There was also an
increase in students who scored proficient and advanced. Forty-eight percent of TAP students saw increases in
their reading levels and there was a 5% school-wide incident reduction in recorded aggressions per day.
As the 2013-2014 school year progresses, the Education Department is working hard to ensure continuous
improvement in both of these programs and continues to aim for greater success outcomes for all students.
PATHWAY’S DRAMA PROGRAM
Through generous donations from the Wyncote Foundation,
the Pathway Drama Program produced three plays:
Cinderella, Seussical the Musical, and The Pathway Players
Review. Under the direction of our resident drama teacher
and People’s Light & Theatre Associate Artistic Director, Mr.
Pete Pryor, this unique drama program affords our students
the thrill of performing in front of a live audience. Creative
opportunities like this help to enhance students’ literacy
abilities, social skills, and confidence while overcoming a
little bit of stage fright! Students who have participated in
our school plays in the past, have made additional strides
in displaying relevant emotions, offering help without
prompting, controlling their tempers, and acknowledging
the perspectives of others. In addition to the therapeutic
benefits of the theatric program, Pathway students achieve
a lifetime of fond memories.
PATHWAY STUDENTS AT WORK IN THE COMMUNITY
COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
The mission of the Pathway School is to prepare
our students for life after graduation. With
the support of our business and community
partners, our students are given the opportunity
to gain valuable work experiences and on-thejob
skills training.
For more than 20 years, IKEA has provided
a supportive worksite for Pathway students.
IKEA has created a variety of opportunities for
students to learn good communication skills, the
Two of the newest worksites to employ Pathway
students are animal rescues - the Francisvale
Home for Smaller Animals in Radnor, PA, and
Pawsabilities Animal Rescue in Harleysville, PA.
Fifteen students have enjoyed the opportunity
to work with dogs, cats, guinea pigs, birds, and
other pets in need of tender loving care. Pathway
students were responsible for a variety of vital pet
care responsibilities, from feeding and walking
the animals to cleaning cages and bathing. The
importance of following directions, and even the
value of giving back to their communites.
At IKEA of Conshohocken, Pathway students
can be found processing returns, working in the
“Bistro,” assisting in the prep kitchen, replenishing
items on shelves, and building furniture pieces
for the “As-Is” displays seen around the store.
IKEA has a culture that recognizes hard work,
and on many occasions IKEA has provided
Pathway students with glowing letters of
recommendation, facilitating their transition
into competitive employment after graduation.
opportunities presented at these animal rescue
sites allowed students to gain a better respect
for other living things, and learn the importance
of responsibility. They learned to be more gentle
while making a difference to the lives of animals
who suffered from neglect and abandonment in
the past.
ANNUAL REPORT 2012-13 FOUNDATION SUMMARY
The Pathway School received several grants during the 2012-2013 school year that enabled
enhancements to vital programs throughout the school.
Kistler-Tiffany Foundation
A grant from the Kistler-Tiffany Foundation replaced the outdated computers in one of Pathway’s student techlabs.
This lab is accessed by many students who use the lab to develop research based projects for their history,
science or language arts classes. In addition to adding greater functionality through the purchase of updated
equipment, our students are able to become familiar with the technology used in other environments, such
as in their career education work place. The Kistler-Tiffany Foundation is helping to position our students for
success with their school work and improved employability skills.
Montgomery County Foundation/MBF Fund
A Cut Above, Pathway’s paper shredding business, was developed through a generous grant from the Montgomery
County Foundation/MBF Fund. Many students are working each day to complete the task of shredding
and disposing of the material in an environmentally responsible way, while learning important employability
skills. Future goals of this program are to solicit additional shredding business from Pathway’s business partners,
as productivity levels increase.
Quaker Chemical Foundation
Pathway’s High school science program benefited from a grant given by the Quaker Chemical Foundation. This
money was used to purchase materials that encourage hands-on activities and experiments for geology and
zoology, including water pollutant analysis kits, curriculum mastery games for high school science, and demo
labs. This multisensory approach solidifies facts introduced in the classroom and enables the students to integrate
these philosophies into their life experience. Hands-on educational experiences like these have aided
Pathway students in their ability to grasp abstract science concepts.
RiverCrest Golf Club and Preserve Phoenixville, PA
FORE! the kids
is the Pathway
School’s most significant
annual fundraiser. Last year
100 golfers came out to raise
money for various student initiatives
that ensure all our children have access
to a healthy lunch, up-to-date technology
in all campus classrooms and transitional support
services as they move forward into adulthood.
