MESSAGE FROM THE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM AND EDUCATION COMMITTEES On behalf of the Scientific Program Committee and the Education Committee, we would like to invite you to participate in the ISMRM 13th Annual Scientific Meeting and Exhibition, to be held 7-13 May 2005 in Miami Beach, Florida, USA. The ISMRM: The Cutting Edge of MR for Science and Clinical Practice The ISMRM is a world-wide multidisciplinary Society dedicated to the development and application of all aspects of magnetic resonance to medicine. The ISMRM Annual Meeting is recognized as the place where the latest cutting edge advances in basic and clinical sciences are presented each year. For the clinician and clinical trainee, the ISMRM meeting is the perfect venue for learning about the technical and scientific developments that are pushing the field forward and for anticipating their impact in clinical practice. Please note that all clinical and basic science scientific abstracts are due 17 November 2004 (for information, refer to the website, www.ismrm.org). Clinical research abstracts, from both practitioners and trainees, are very much welcomed. Each year, over 2500 abstracts are presented at the ISMRM, in oral and poster sessions. This year’s meeting will also feature a subset of electronic posters. Details about the scientific program will be available in early Spring 2005. The ISMRM: Science and Education The ISMRM Annual Meeting is also rich in educational offerings. The Society is home to many of the world’s best teachers in MR, and their expertise as leading scientists and clinician-scientists adds further value to the courses they teach. In this brochure, the Educational Offerings for clinicians are highlighted, with the target audience including practicing clinicians, clinical trainees, and MR technologists. For North Americans, this weeklong venue of educational courses offers the opportunity to receive over 50 hours of CME credit. For details on credit in many national CME programs outside North America, contact the ISMRM Central Office. In addition to formal educational opportunities, the Technical Exhibition at the ISMRM provides a wealth of exposure to the latest commercial advances in MR. Layout of the Week at the ISMRM Annual Meeting: An Overview The WEEKEND (7-8 May 2005): The week at the ISMRM begins with intensive one- and two-day Educational Courses that cover a broad span of basic science and clinical topics (see pages 9-10). On Saturday, clinical courses include the new introductory “Clinical MRI: From Physical Principles to Practical Protocols” and other day-long courses on Artifacts and Pitfalls, Breast Imaging, and Clinical MR Spectroscopy. On Sunday, day-long courses include offerings focusing on Body, Neuro, Musculoskeletal, and Cardiac MR. Additionally, the Section for Magnetic Resonance Technologists will be presenting its 14th Annual Meeting over the weekend, with an excellent educational and scientific program, (see page 16). The WEEK (9-13 May 2005): The Scientific Program begins on Monday, 9 May 2005 and is filled with scientific and educational offerings in parallel sessions throughout the week starting each day (except Monday) at 7 am and formally ending at 6 pm (except Friday). The layout for each day is shown on pages 4-7. By means of introduction, the specific types of courses offered are described below: • Plenary Sessions and Distinguished Speakers (page 8) From Monday through Friday, plenary sessions offer a cutting-edge overview of MR science and include speakers from outside the field of magnetic resonance who will assess the role and value of MR relative to advances in other fields. The Lauterbur and Mansfield Distinguished Lectureships honor the contributions of Paul Lauterbur and Sir Peter Mansfield (Nobel Prize Awardees in 2003) and have a tradition of featuring truly distinguished individuals in the field. Following an opening plenary on “MR in a Multidisciplinary World,” the theme of the plenary sessions in the remainder of the week will be “MR at Different Scales,” from molecules (Tuesday) to whole body imaging (Friday), reflecting the impressive span of MR applications. • Clinical MR Problem Solving Courses (page 11) These case-based courses are a NEW feature of the Annual Meeting and form the core of the weeklong Clinical MRI: From Principles to Practice program (see below). Run in parallel to the scientific sessions and clinical categorical courses, these two-hour sessions focus on common, every day clinical MR problems that are challenging to practicing physicians and clinical trainees. Instructors in the problem-solving courses are among the most experienced MR clinician-scientists in the field, selected for their renowned excellence as teachers. Also, as part of this initiative, Hands-On Workshops for vendor-specific Protocol Optimization will be run on two separate days (advanced sign-up required). • Morning Categorical Courses (page 12) From Tuesday through Friday, the day begins with an educational session from 07:00 - 08:00. Each four-day Morning Categorical course is designed to cover a more advanced educational curriculum to complement the Weekend programs. New features for the 2005 meeting include courses that focus on how recent technical advances impact the clinical practice of body MRI, new horizons in musculoskeletal MR, a course in cardiovascular MR technical developments, and a course on answering clinical neuro questions with the gamut of new MR tools (perfusion, diffusion, functional MRI). • Clinical Categorical Courses (page 13) Two-hour focus sessions that run in parallel to the scientific sessions, these courses concentrate on important clinical topics that deserve special emphasis— for example, this year’s meeting has sessions on Imaging at 3T; MRI in the Mother, Fetus and Newborn; Current Topics in Cardiac MRI; Cancer Problem Solving; and a potpourri of Hot Topics. • MR Physics for Clinicians (page 14) From Monday through Thursday from 16:00 – 18:00, the ever-popular “MR Physics for Clinicians” course will round out the clinical MR education programs with a non-mathematical review of the basic principles of physics from basics to more advanced topics including diffusion, vascular MR, functional MRI, and spectroscopy. This course complements the Saturday introductory MR course. • SMRT and ISMRM Joint Forum: Optimizing Pulse Sequences and Protocols (page 14) The ISMRM and its affiliated organization, the Section for Magnetic Resonance Technologists, each year construct a forum dealing with a specific issue in clinical MRI. The perspective of both clinicians and technologists is brought to bear on the problem. This year the topic will be optimization of sequences and protocols to maximize the effectiveness of the resulting images in patient management. 2
Message from the Scientific Program and Education Committees continued New for Clinicians! Clinical MRI: From Principles to Practice For the novice, or for clinicians desiring a refresher in the basics of MRI, the Scientific and Educational Committees have conceived a NEW week-long program called Clinical MRI: From Principles to Practice, based on selected offerings from the Educational Program at the ISMRM Annual Meeting. Attendees are recommended to start on Saturday, 7 May with the one-day intensive course, Clinical MRI: From Physical Principles to Practical Protocols, which will introduce the physical principles of MR in the context of understanding routine clinical protocols. On Sunday, attendees have a choice of day-long clinical educational programs, including Musculoskeletal MR, Advanced Body MR, Advanced Neuro MR, and Cardiac MR, among others. During the week, the attendees of this program are encouraged to attend the Morning Categorical courses of their choosing, the Plenary Sessions, and then all the Clinical MR Problem-Solving courses, including the Hands-On Workshops for protocol optimization on vendor-supplied and supported workstations. MR Physics for Clinicians will round out each day of education for the program (see page 11). Educational Offerings at the ISMRM for All Levels: From Novice to Expert Beyond program offerings grouped in the new “Clinical MRI: From Principles to Practice” course, the ISMRM Annual Meeting offers a wealth of choices for more advanced clinical MR practitioners and for clinician-scientists. On Saturday, day-long courses in clinical MRI include Artifacts and Pitfalls: Optimization in the Clinic; Breast Imaging; and Methods and Applications of Clinical Spectroscopy. On Sunday, in addition to courses on Advanced Body, Neuro, Musculoskeletal, and Cardiac MR, educational courses with relevance to tomorrow’s application in the clinic are offered on Cancer, Functional MRI, and the rapidly evolving field of “MR and Molecular Imaging.” Following the Plenary Sessions, clinicians can choose from Scientific Sessions, Clinical Categoricals, and Clinical MR Problem-Solving Courses. In the late afternoon, options include the Scientific Sessions (oral, as well as traditional and e-posters), MR Physics for Clinicians, or a visit to the Technical Exhibition, where vendors present the latest offerings in MR-related equipment and technology. Educational Offerings at the ISMRM for all Interests: Musculoskeletal, Neuro, Body, Cardiovascular, and More In this brochure, on pages 4-7, using a color-coded scheme, the week-long program at the ISMRM is laid out for clinical attendees with specific interests in Musculoskeletal, Neuro, Body, and Cardiovascular MR. The offerings highlighted include only the Educational Program. A modified version of these Overviews, which includes Scientific Sessions of interest to each specialty will be available closer to the time of the meeting. The take-home message from inspection of these schemes will certainly be that there is something for everyone at this meeting! student members. Additionally, as ISMRM student members, trainees have the opportunity to benefit from a broad number of programs, including Stipends and Awards targeted toward students (clinical and basic science) of MR (see below). Stipends and Awards for Clinical Trainees and Others The ISMRM has developed a number of programs to facilitate and encourage attendance by students and trainees as well as practicing clinicians from underresourced nations. For more information and application materials, refer to page 15 and online at www.ismrm.org. The programs include: • Educational Stipends for Students, Postdoctoral and Clinical Trainees For support for attendance to present abstracts at the Annual Meeting. First authors will be given priority. Recipients of stipends who are not yet members of the ISMRM will be required to submit an application for membership before funds are disbursed. Deadline for application is 22 November 2004, although please note that the abstract deadline is 17 November 2004. • 2005 Young Investigator Awards Every year the ISMRM offers the possibility for trainees to compete for the W.S. Moore Award, a highly regarded prize for the best contribution of original clinical research in MR, presented by a young investigator. To be considered for this award, manuscripts must be submitted by 3 November 2004, with the balance of application materials by 19 November 2004. • New Entrant Stipend Award For trainees who are new to the field and who are not first or presenting authors on abstracts, this program awards US$400 toward the costs of attending the Miami meeting. Applicants are required to attend at least 4 days of the meeting, including one day of the weekend. Awardees will have the opportunity to be paired with a member of the ISMRM community for mentoring at the meeting. Deadline for applications is 31 January 2005. • E.K. Zavoisky Stipend Established to support the attendance of scientists and clinicians from underresourced nations who do not have access to the financial means to attend the Annual Meeting (trainees are not eligible for this program), the E.K. Zavoisky Stipend Program gives priority to first authors on submitted abstracts. Deadline for applications is 22 November 2004. The Scientific Program and Education Committees are extremely excited about the meeting in Miami. As always, we welcome your input and warmly invite you to participate in the Miami meeting. How to Register Registration forms for the Annual Meeting are on pages 22-23 and online at www.ismrm.org. Please note the discount for early registration. Members enjoy a significantly reduced registration fee. Members also enjoy a number of other valuable benefits including reduced registration fees for not only the Annual Meeting but also for the numerous specialty ISMRM Workshops that happen throughout the year, choice of one of the Society journals (JMRI or MRM), membership in Study Groups, and more (see pages 20-21).
