Republic and Jamaica prime dest<strong>in</strong>ations<br />

for U.S. goods and services. “The Caribbean is a<br />

natural area for U.S. firms to explore new export<br />

opportunities that will result <strong>in</strong> more jobs for<br />

American workers,” said Wade.<br />

The United States is the primary trad<strong>in</strong>g partner<br />

for both countries. In 2009, U.S. exports to the Dom<strong>in</strong>ican<br />

Republic totaled $5.27 billion. That same<br />

year, exports to Jamaica totaled $1.45 billion.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the week-long mission, company representatives<br />

participated <strong>in</strong> more than 180 meet<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

with potential bus<strong>in</strong>ess partners, distributors,<br />

agents, and customers. The bus<strong>in</strong>ess delegation<br />

brought together representatives from a variety of<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustries, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the manufactur<strong>in</strong>g, transportation,<br />

consumer goods, cosmetics, home care,<br />

and f<strong>in</strong>ancial services <strong>in</strong>dustry sectors.<br />

Participat<strong>in</strong>g companies <strong>in</strong>cluded Atlanta Global<br />

Resources, Inc.; Atrium Shutters; Bon <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>International</strong><br />

Corporation; CMD Trailer Sales and Leas<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Mach<strong>in</strong>ery; Magna-Bon II, LLC; Morton Supplies,<br />

Inc.; Palladio Beauty Group; and PGT Industries.<br />

Suggestions Sought for National Export<br />

Initiative<br />

Have you encountered challenges <strong>in</strong> export<strong>in</strong>g?<br />

Do you have ideas for improv<strong>in</strong>g government programs<br />

to make it easier to export? If so, the <strong>Trade</strong><br />

Promotion Coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g Committee (TPCC)<br />

wants to hear from you.<br />

The TPCC, a committee composed of representatives<br />

from 20 federal agencies, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the Department of Commerce, is work<strong>in</strong>g to help<br />

implement the adm<strong>in</strong>istration’s National Export<br />

Initiative (NEI). The NEI calls for the doubl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of U.S. exports over the next five years. It was announced<br />

by President Barack Obama <strong>in</strong> his State<br />

of the Union message to Congress <strong>in</strong> January<br />

(see the February-March issue of <strong>International</strong><br />

<strong>Trade</strong> Update), and steps to carry it out were <strong>in</strong><br />

Executive Order 13534, issued by the president on<br />

March 11, 2010.<br />

The TPCC is solicit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>put from the public—<br />

and especially from exporters, other bus<strong>in</strong>esses,<br />

trade associations, academia, labor organizations,<br />

and non-governmental organizations—on a variety<br />

of export promotion policy matters, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• steps that the federal government could take to<br />

improve its programs to support U.S. exports;<br />

• examples of effective foreign trade promotion<br />

programs and activities that could <strong>in</strong>form U.S.<br />

federal government program development; and<br />

• more generally, how the federal government<br />

could better help U.S. bus<strong>in</strong>esses export.<br />

The complete request for public comment, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

details about how to submit comments, is<br />

<strong>in</strong> the official notice published by the TPCC <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Federal Register on June 30, 2010 (http://edocket.<br />

access.gpo.gov/2010/2010-15934.htm). Comments<br />

must be received by 11:59 p.m. on July 26, 2010.<br />
