A Message From Our Leadership 

St. Vincent’s HealthCare is recognized throughout Northeast Florida for going above and beyond for our patients, their families, and 

our community. The mission-driven care that we provide every day to patients at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside, St. Vincent’s 

Medical Center Southside, St. Catherine Labouré Manor, and soon, St. Vincent’s Medical Center Clay County, is what sets us apart 

from other healthcare providers. Our mission—to serve all persons, with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable—is 

shaped not only by our history, but also by the dedication of our leadership, physicians, nurses, employees, 

and volunteers. For almost a century, we have embodied a culture of compassion and a sense of community 

that is vital to bringing hope, health, and healing to all patients who come to us seeking medical care. 

Although St. Vincent’s HealthCare has more than 1,300 patient beds and 5,000 employees, nationally 

and internationally recognized physicians and surgeons, sophisticated technology, as well as research and 

clinical trials, we are much more than a list of resources. St. Vincent’s HealthCare is the joy on the face of 

parents in The Family Birth Place as they see their new baby for the first time. St. Vincent’s HealthCare is a 

patient’s appreciation for a new wheelchair they could not have afforded were it not provided through our 

Good Samaritan Fund. St. Vincent’s HealthCare is the white cross that sits atop our hospitals as a symbol 

that lights the way to our expert healthcare and serves as a constant reminder of Jesus’ immense love for us.

St. Vincent’s strong commitment to public service is rooted in our values and our traditions. The integration 

of our mission combines all of the processes, programs, and relationships that express a Generosity of 

Spirit that is deeply woven into the fiber of our ministry; a spirit that is expressed in a deep commitment 

and sense of purpose; and a spirit evident by the compassionate environment that is St. Vincent’s culture. It is 

this dedication that draws patients, donors, physicians, volunteers, and employees to our hospitals. 

As I review our Community Benefit initiatives over the past year, I am reminded that we are blessed beyond 

measure. These blessings come in the form of Generosity of Spirit through our Foundation and its partnerships 

with other local and national public-service advocates in the community. Together, we help improve the 

health and well-being for adults and children in our area. Thanks to these shared efforts, we are able to create 

partnerships and provide funding for many outreach programs and community activities.

Last year, St. Vincent’s provided more than $51 million in charity care and community benefit to Northeast 

Florida and Southeast Georgia through initiatives such as: Mobile Health Outreach Ministry, Bryan Family 

Cancer Patient Advocacy Program, Early Childhood Literacy Intervention Program, Good Samaritan Fund, 

and many more. We enabled more than 4,000 in-need women to receive mammography screenings through 

our Mobile Mammography Unit, and we also provided $750,000 in donated laboratory work. 

As you review the long list of Community Benefit programs, it is clear that lives are changed because of 

the generosity of so many. Those words, “Generosity of Spirit,” are part of the Mission of St. Vincent’s

Distributions For The Physicians Giving Societies 

St. Vincent’s Riverside and St. Vincent’s Southside Physicians Giving Societies are physician-directed endowed funds 

that provide financial support for programs that improve patient care at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside and 

St. Vincent’s Medical Center Southside. At each hospital, a physician-appointed steering committee, made up of members of the 

Society, review proposals and select which programs to support. The funds are held by St. Vincent’s HealthCare Foundation and invested 

for long term growth. The Physicians Giving Societies are proud to announce program distributions and grants in the amount of $73,100. 

St. Vincent’s Riverside Physicians Giving Society 

Adult Cystic Fibrosis: $2,500 for education for nurses to attend the national conference 

Body and Soul: $11,000 for the art and music therapy program designed for patients to enjoy during their stay at

St. Healing 

Restoring Patients To Active Lifestyles Above Their Expectations 

The orthopedic team at St. Vincent’s Orthopedic Center of Excellence shares a passion for restoring patients back to full, happy, and active lifestyles. They know that as 

we age, mobility is the single most important function of good health because it strengthens our muscles, heart, and lungs. That’s why St. Vincent’s Orthopedic Center 

of Excellence Medical Director, R. David Heekin, M.D. FACS, has helped lead a multidisciplinary, comprehensive program designed exclusively for patients undergoing 

orthopedic surgeries or procedures such as: total joint replacement; knee, hip, and shoulder arthroscopy; hand, foot, and ankle surgery; limb salvage; or fracture care. 

Proving that health mobility is important at any age, John Muilenburg was 97 years old when he needed to have his left knee 

replaced. He missed playing golf, a sport he had loved for more than 20 years. “He was an incredibly healthy, active 97 year 

old who appeared in many ways younger than his age. He had a really bad knee and it was clear to me that if I fixed it, I could 

improve his quality of life,” said Dr. Heekin. Sure enough, Mr. Muilenburg was chasing that little white ball around the Penney 

Farms 9-hole golf course one month after surgery! Three years later, in November 2011, St. Vincent’s Riverside campus hosted 

the 1st Annual HIOR Joint Replacement Fun Walk benefiting the Jacksonville chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and the 

Heekin Institute for Orthopedic Research. More than 250 participants attended the Walk, raising more than $8,000. “Seeing 

a large group of our patients and other joint replacement recipients all walking together in one place was truly gratifying,” 

said Gavan Duffy, M.D., one of Heekin Orthopedic’s joint replacement surgeons. It also warmed Dr. Heekin’s heart to see the 

100 year old Mr. Muilenburg cross the finish line. “When I saw that he was participating in the Walk, I was so happy, and of 

course very proud of his finish,” said Dr. Heekin.

Committed to providing the highest-quality care possible, St. Vincent’s offers a complete patient-centered experience focused 

on holistic healing of the body, mind, and spirit at both St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside and St. Vincent’s Medical Center 

Southside. St. Vincent’s Riverside is currently reconstructing the Orthopedic Center of Excellence which will provide world-class 

compassionate care, education, and healing. The new state-of-the-art patient rooms will be outfitted with private bathrooms 

specifically designed for patients recovering from orthopedic surgery. This Center will also have educational and family-oriented 

solariums, as well as monitoring equipment with the latest technology. St. Vincent’s new home for its Orthopedic Center of 

Excellence will be a place of hope, education, and healing. Dr. Heekin says, “St. Vincent’s has chosen to become a leader in this 

field and will continue to be the destination for those in the region who need these surgeries and who want to receive them in a 

caring environment by recognized experts.”

FAST FACTS ABOUT ST. VINCENT’S ORTHOPEDIC CENTER OF EXCELLENCE 

• St. Vincent’s Orthopedic Center of Excellence is the first program in the region to receive the Joint Commission’s stamp of approval. 

Joint Commission is the nation’s premier healthcare accreditation entity. 

• St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside’s Joint Replacement Program is the first hospital in Northeast Florida with the Disease Specific 

Certification designation by Joint Commission. 

• In 2010, St. Vincent’s Joint Replacement Program performed a total of 2,078 hip and knee replacements — more than the total amount of 

primary joint replacements performed at any other hospital throughout the state of Florida. 

• St. Vincent’s HealthCare is the first hospital in Northeast Florida to offer pre-operative Joint Replacement classes. Dubbed “Pre-hab”, this 

class is designed to educate patients and their families about the actual joint replacement surgery as well as guide them on the transition 

back to their home environment.

Nursing Care That Goes Beyond 

Employees at St. Vincent’s HealthCare consider a patient’s care their calling. Our doctors, nurses, staff members, and 

volunteers believe in our mission and are inspired to live it every day. Doing your job is expected no matter where you 

work, but at St. Vincent’s HealthCare, our employees go above and beyond simply because it’s part of who they are. Our 

nurses are on the front line of care each day, listening, calming, encouraging, guiding, praising, and helping their patients. One 

of many examples of how our nurses exceed the expectations of not only their patients, but also their peers, is St. Vincent’s 

Medical Center Southside nurse Jessie Haury, BSN, RN, CNOR.

Since the beginning of her career as an Operating Room (OR) nurse, Jessie personifies the definition of a guardian angel. “I tell my patients that I will be there with them 

before, during and after their surgery,” says Jessie. “I tell them that I will pray for them during surgery and watch over them while they are asleep.” Her steady calmness, 

compassionate nature, and kind words have brought comfort and hope to many. Jessie has also been recognized by one of her patients through St. Vincent’s Foundation’s 

Guardian Angel Program (see box), thanking her for showing such care and empathy. 

This past year, while working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Jessie looked after a patient named Lisa who was left quadriplegic after an automobile accident and is 

unable to move from her neck down. Lisa missed holding her daily devotional book, so the staff read out loud to Lisa each day, bringing her comfort and peace. Jessie 

and Lisa looked forward to these moments of reflection and prayer together, especially since the devotionals seemed to be speaking to Jessie. “We would read a verse 

from her book and I would look up and say ‘Lisa, this verse applies to me! I was just talking to you about this issue, and here is a devotional about it!’” remembers 

Jessie. “Lisa would just look at me with this all-knowing smile. That’s when I understood that God was talking to me through Lisa, through her devotionals, giving me 

the strength I needed to adjust from the OR to the high emotions involved in caring for patients in the ICU.”

The Guardian Angel program gives patients 

and family members the opportunity 

to make gifts in honor of a clinical or 

nonclinical staff member for a job welldone. 

The person who is honored receives 

a note of appreciation as well as a customcrafted 

lapel pin to wear on their ID badge.

Each day, Jessie goes above and beyond for her 

patients—even coming in on her day off to celebrate 

Lisa’s birthday, bringing balloons, party hats, and 

presents. Jessie’s co-workers saw her dedication, 

so they nominated her for the 2011 Carol Wilder 

Pitman Nursing Recognition Society where she was 

one of three honorees to receive the award (see page 

13). Recognizing a rising star when they see one, 

the administrators at St. Vincent’s Medical Center 

Southside recently promoted Jessie to her current 

position as Assistant Nurse Manager in the OR. 

Our employees go the extra mile to provide expert 

care, exceeding expectations every day. Jessie has 

even traveled to Africa as a volunteer OR nurse for 

Mercy Ships where she lived for two weeks aboard a 

499-foot “floating hospital,” helping doctors perform 

surgeries for those without access to healthcare. The 

unwavering compassion of employees like Jessie Haury 

is what keeps St. Vincent’s HealthCare the heart of our 

community.

St. Family 

Because To Us…You Are Family 

When we think of family, we think of Mary Virginia Terry. The gifts of love, trust, time, and support that 

family gives freely to each other are the gifts Mary Virginia gives to our community through St. Vincent’s. 

Her generous gifts include a Conference Center and state-of-the-art Cancer Center at St. Vincent’s Medical Center 

Riverside and, most recently, The C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry Women & Infants Pavilion at St. Vincent’s 

Medical Center Southside campus. This Center of Excellence is dedicated to taking care of women and newborns. 

Focused solely on the specific medical needs of women, the Pavilion includes: a 10-bed Level II Neonatal Intensive 

Care Unit (NICU) with private rooms for each infant; The Family Birth Place, Jacksonville’s only 5-Star maternity 

hospital; and the Women’s Surgical Unit, a separate women’s floor that provides women with the most comfortable 

accommodations to recover following procedures and surgeries. 

We want every woman patient to feel as though they are cared for by their very own family. Just ask the Mallard 

family what this means to them. After having an emergency Cesarean section, Edric and Debra Mallard’s baby 

boy, EJ, was born at The Family Birth Place inside The C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry Women & Infants 

Pavilion. Two months premature and weighing only 2 pounds, 7 ounces, EJ lost several more ounces and had to be 

placed on a respirator. Under the steady, caring leadership of Jonathan Schwartz, M.D., Director of Neonatology, 

the nurses, staff, and other team members worked hand-in-hand with EJ and his parents, embracing the Mallard 

family as one of their own.

The New Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in 

The C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry 

Women & Infants Pavilion 

The new Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in The C. Herman and 

Mary Virginia Terry Women & Infants Pavilion is the first in Northeast Florida to 

offer single-family NICU rooms. These individual rooms mean that, like the adult 

patients in the Intensive Care Unit, premature babies will each have their own 

rooms, tailored to their specific needs. The rooms provide minimal stimulation 

for babies, therefore lowering their stress and encouraging healing. Private NICU 

rooms also enable parents to bond with their infant anytime, 24-hours a day. 

The private suites in our new 10-bed NICU include: 

• The latest technology and monitoring systems including state-of-the-art 

Giraffe NICU beds that promote comfort and warmth, as well as easy access 

to the infant 

• Special natural lighting that promotes development of premature babies 

• Lactation consultation, refrigeration, breast milk pumps and warmers… 

everything the new mother may need 

During EJ’s two months in the NICU, the team quickly fell in love 

with their little patient who fought his way from a NICU bed to the 

smiling, thriving six month old boy he is today. “Stories like EJ’s

Healthcare That Works 

St. Vincent’s HealthCare has been dedicated to quality, 

compassionate, patient-centered care for almost 100 years, and is 

currently in the process of expanding its ministry into Clay County. 

Patients at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Clay County campus will 

have access to a full range of hospital-based services, including 

outpatient services and emergency care. 

Scheduled to open in October 2013, services will include: 

• Outpatient Services for Pediatrics and Adults 

• Emergency Services 

• Surgery Center with kid-friendly design 

• Imaging Center for children and adults 

• Cardiac Care Services 

• Orthopedics

Healthcare That Leaves No One Behind 

According to recent surveys, Clay County is now the 9th fastest growing county in the State of Florida. With 18% of its residents on 

Medicaid, building a hospital in Clay County and serving the community’s needs spoke right to the heart of St. Vincent’s mission: providing 

access to comprehensive medical care to a currently underserved population. The site of the new hospital will provide children and adults 

in this region readily available medical care, close to the nurturing support of their loved ones.

MARY LOU DAVIS ENDOWMENT FOR ST. VINCENT’S WOMEN’S 

HEART INITIATIVE – $717,747 

Earnings from this endowment are used for the Women’s Heart Initiative 

as part of the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside Cardiovascular 

Program. In 2010–2011, $45,257 was used to provide diagnostic 

screenings, cardiac education, and support the “Ladies Night Out” event 

at the St. Johns Town Center, focusing on fighting heart disease. 

ELOISE AND BILL GAY, SR. 

DESIGNATED FUND FOR CARDIAC EDUCATION – $113,259 

Earnings from this fund are used to provide cardiac care education to 

clinical staff. In 2010–2011, $3,867 was used to provide training using 

best-practices and to perform clinical trials in the area of cardiac care. 

EULA GIVENS ENDOWMENT – $14,671 

This annual endowment award recognizes an associate of St. Catherine 

Labouré Manor who practices the core value of dedication when caring 

for patients. The associate goes above and beyond a patient’s expectations, 

displaying a compassionate and nurturing manner and an untiring 

commitment to the mission of St. Vincent’s. This year, 23 nominations 

were submitted for employees who exceeded their patient’s expectations. 

PETER AND MAXINE KROLL 

ENDOWED CHAIR FOR WELLNESS EDUCATION – $72,908 

Earnings from this fund support wellness education and overall health 

awareness in the Jacksonville community. During 2010–2011, $11,058 

was used for educating the community about various health and wellness 

issues, including breast cancer and obesity.

NURSERY ENDOWMENT – $149,628 

Earnings from this endowment are used to provide on-going support to 

underprivileged mothers and their infants. During 2010–2011, $6,225 

from this endowment provided forty-eight women with new car seats for 

their infants, as well as clothes, blankets and basic necessities to care for 

their babies upon discharge from St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside. 

JOHN AND EDNA LENNON ENDOWMENT – $449,717 

During 2010–2011, $17,933 from this endowment was used to benefit 

sick, elderly, and infirm patients at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside 

and St. Catherine Labouré Manor. 

BETSY LOVETT FUND FOR THE ADVANCEMENT 

OF SURGERY AND MEDICINE – $229,637 

Earnings from this fund are put toward research, technology, education, 

and training for surgeons and operating room staff at St. Vincent’s 

Medical Center Riverside. During 2010–2011, $7,449 was used towards 

the purchase of an i-STAT Point of Care device that provides real-time, 

lab-quality results within minutes to accelerate the patient care decisionmaking 

process in the operating room suites.

NURSING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 

ENDOWMENT – $527,332 

Each year, earnings from this endowment provide ten $2,000 

scholarships for nurses at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside and 

St. Vincent’s Medical Center Southside to further their education by 

attaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Master of Science in 

Nursing. This program’s purpose is to provide better patient care at our 

family of hospitals. 

CAROL WILDER PITMAN NURSING RECOGNITION 

SOCIETY ENDOWMENT FUND – $214,711 

Each year, this nursing recognition society honors three direct care nurses 

that exemplify St. Vincent’s core values by providing compassionate 

nursing care. Nurses must practice patient-centered care, lead by 

example, have a positive spirit, consistently meet patient and family needs 

through integration of skills, knowledge, professionalism, compassion, 

and tenderness, and overcome challenges through a positive, caring and 

nurturing attitude for the benefit of others. This year, 43 nominations 

were submitted for exceptional nurses, all who went above and beyond 

for their patients. 

ELEANOR JONES SANDEL 

NURSING EDUCATION DESIGNATED FUND – $646,513 

Earnings from this fund enable St. Vincent’s HealthCare to recruit and 

maintain skilled nursing staff by offering programs that promote clinical 

excellence resulting in the best patient outcomes. In 2010–2011, $26,883 

was used for programs to emphasize team training in nursing education, 

enhance support of nursing orientation, provide for in-service and 

continuing education, and create nursing career ladders commensurate 

with educational level and experience. 

MARY B. WINSTON 

SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT – $134,434 

Each year, earnings from this endowment provide five $1,000 scholarships 

in Radiologic Technology, Ultrasound Technology, Radiation Therapy, 

and Nuclear Medicine. The purpose of this program is to provide a handson 

career-education while meeting the staffing needs of these vital areas. 

HEART AND LUNG DESIGNATED FUND – $1,025,384 

Earnings from this fund support research, education, and program needs 

of St. Vincent’s HealthCare’s pulmonary and cardiology programs. During 

2010–2011, $42,839 provided 26 cardiology and pulmonary nurses with 

on-going training and continuing education. 

ST. VINCENT’S HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION 

ENDOWMENT – $7,503,306 

These permanently restricted funds allow for an annual distribution for 

any need in keeping with the mission of St. Vincent’s HealthCare and 

approved by the Board of Directors, including subsidizing operating 

costs of the Foundation. During 2010–2011, $184,746 was distributed 

to community outreach programs.
