Welcome!
For you, for me and for everyone who works at Lakewood, a guitar is something special: a friend, a lover,
occasionally demanding and not always easy. Yet we continue to be drawn to this magical instrument.
We just can’t put it down and so the guitar becomes part of our lives.
Let us take you along on a journey into the world of Lakewood Guitars and show you all the different instruments we have
dreamed up for you. You can find out exactly which materials make up the guitars. You can see the various models and custom
options. You can make comparisons and see your guitar from close up.
When we decided to make our very first Signature Guitar, it was clear from the start that it would be dedicated to fingerstyle
specialist Ulli Boegershausen. You might be surprised to learn that every single guitar will be played in personally by Ulli,
but then again, you have always expected the best from Lakewood!
Perhaps you haven’t found exactely ‘your’ guitar yet? The Lakewood Customshop can make a unique
one-off instrument just for you. We can offer advice or perhaps you prefer to make your own ‘voyage of discovery’ in
this catalogue or on the Lakewood website.
With warmest greetings,
Martin Seeliger
The Natural Series
Precious woods, pure and untreated, display their natural beauty: the most direct path from the material to the eye of the
beholder, reduced to the absolute basics. No more, but no less either, since every guitar in the Natural Series is built
to the same high standards of guitar artistry shared by all Lakewood instruments.
The language of form allows the materials to speak for themselves.
Each instrument is made up of finely tuned elements - a series where less is definitely more.
Your guitar is something very special to you. - It is to us, too.
The Deluxe Series
The traditional Lakewood body shapes interpreted in a classic wood selection of spruce and rosewood. The carefully considered
construction of our guitars guarantees a big and transparent sound that really projects.
The various body shapes of the instruments that make up the Deluxe series offer subtle varieties of sound
that lend themselves to different styles of playing from fingerpicking to bluegrass.
The luxurious finishes speak to the senses. Fine wood, mother-of-pearl inlays and high-gloss varnished soundboards
set the tone for this series.
The feeling for the perfect piece of wood. Experience that cannot be learned from a book.
Ulli Bögershausen Signature Guitar
This guitar is quite different than one would expect and is like no other instrument you have ever held
in your hands. Ulli Bögershausen’s sonic and visual ideas were a major contribution to the concept of
this extraordinary guitar.
Uniquely, each individual instrument will be played in by Ulli in person. Thus the subtle shades of its
character will already be influenced, ready for you to carry on the story of your guitar yourself. Now
Basic body shapes and measurements
Appointments
Body size and shape have a major influence on the sound of a guitar. At Lakewood we offer four basic body shapes: Grand Concert, Dreadnought,
Auditorium and Jumbo. Each of these four shapes has its own special elements that give the guitar its own character and sound. Before you begin to
make your dream a reality, you will need to decide which type of guitar you need. What kind of music will you mostly be playing? What expectations do
you have from the point of view of sound and ergonomics of the instrument? Will you be playing alone or in a group?
The following descriptions are intended to help you in making your decisions.
Soundboards
Back & sides
Neck
Grand Concert (M)
Dreadnought (D) Auditorium (A) Jumbo (J)
A traditional body shape with an even bass
treble ratio. Combined with a slightly wider
neck, it is a perfect fingerstyle guitar with quick
response.
Measurements of the guitar models
A heavier bass response from a slightly bigger
instrument with less waist. Combined with a
somewhat narrower neck it‘s a good strumming
guitar, for instance for a singer-songwriter.
A small body with the body-neck-joint at the
12 th fret. Very fast response with great projection
and clarity. Perfect for flat-picking, for
example bluegrass.
Large body with a dominant sound. A deeper
shape and a larger soundboard make for fine
bass response and resonance. Perfectly suited to
solo performers.
in the wood chart (pages 44 & 45).
What do the style numbers mean?
Each guitar is named according to its most important
characteristics. The letter preceding the guitar
name represents the shape. This is followed by the
style code, representing the kind of wood used for
the back and sides. After this the word ‘custom’
denotes that it is a special one-off design.
So, for instance, an M-22 custom is a Grand
Concert guitar with walnut back and sides, built
according to special customer wishes.
Incidentally, the same system is used for our standard
guitar series, without the word ‘custom’.
A slotted headstock comes from the classical
concert instrument and works particularly well
in combination with the Lakewood Auditorium
model, though it can be striking when used with
other styles just as well. In contrast to a flat headstock,
a slotted traditional style headstock requires a
little more practice when changing strings.
The two variations have no impact on sound
quality, sustain or stability.
There are various alternative names for the
soundhole rosette: soundhole inlay, soundhole
decoration or simply rosette.
Abalone looks good
against lighter
headstock veneers, while
white mother-of-pearl
contrasts well with
darker woods.
The choice of wood for the headstock veneer is
entirely a matter of individual taste. Rosewood
and ebony work well for most guitars as they blend
well in the overall appearance of the guitar. For
custom guitars it can be interesting to use the same
wood for the headstock veneer that has been selected
for back & sides.
What is purfling?
Instrument makers use this description for the small additional inlays that grace the outside edges of the guitar. They provide a suitable contrast when, for
instance, two equally dark woods have been used together. The style and mounting of the purfling cannot be altered in the Lakewood Customshop, nor can they
be left out on the body binding, since we consider them a necessity for the visual harmony of the instrument. Purfling at the edge of the fingerboard or headstock
are however optional. Abalone inlays come under the category of purfling and can be added, if desired, to decorate the body of the guitar or the fingerboard and
headstock.
The pickguard is there mostly for
functional reasons. It protects
the soundboard from scratches caused
by plectrum use.
Depending upon the way you play
guitar you might consider using a
pickguard in order to protect your
instrument.
The decision to choose a tinted soundboard or sunburst finish for your
custom guitar is entirely up to your personal taste. A sunburst finish
gives the guitar a so-called ‘vintage look’, akin to many of the older American
guitars. A honey-coloured finish helps tint lighter woods (for example European
spruce) and gives a ready-made and naturally ‘used’ look to a new instrument.
Tinted cedar soundboards, incidentally, also look wonderful.
Having an open-pored satin finish means that spruce and cedar tops are however filled-grain finished, since the delicate structures of evergreen woods require
this method of lacquering.
Will such a finish protect your guitar just as well?
The answer is ‘Yes’, because the finish only leaves the pores with the appearance of being open. Since filling the pores is carefully avoided during the varnishing
process, the structure of the outside layer of the wood remains visible, although the wood is still well protected by the four full layers of varnish we apply. You will
even be able to wipe off the surface with a damp cloth and simply rub it dry.
What are the advantages of a high-gloss finish?
First of all the visual aspect. High-gloss brings out the beauty of the wood even more. The colours gain an even deeper and richer glow, almost as if one is looking
into a three-dimensional piece of wood. Exotic woods too, or those with particularly unusual grain are equally enhanced by high-gloss varnish.
By the way, satin finish and high-gloss varnishes are of an almost identical thickness.
