Remember the Journey
FHE lesson plan Jon the plan of salvation
Opening Discussion:
Ask the members of your family to think of and share a time when they forgot something important. Have some examples of things
that are really bad to forget (such as forgetting to turn off the bathtub and having it overflow, forgetting an important appointment, forgetting
to take the cookies out of the oven, etc.) Talk about possible consequences of forgetting these things.
Then ask the members of your family to think of the very worst thing a person could forget in this life. Explain to them that while there
are a lot of things we could forget, the worst thing we could forget is why we are here on this earth and what we are supposed to be
doing. Give an overview of the plan of salvation, or ask a family member to explain it.
Read or have a family member read the following:
“Every one of us prepared for this mortal journey for ages before we were born. What greater tragedy could there be than to forget
the journey we are on and fail this test after we prepared for and anticipated it for ages. Too many have forgotten why we are here.
With the knowledge that we have, we should always be found moving forward on His pathway, and we should always be leading others
to understand and to remember. This journey is all about coming to know the Savior and striving to be like Him. ”
Play the Song: “Remember the Journey” from the Jenny Phillips CD Remember the Journey.
*To keep young children’s attention during the song, you could give them crayons and a paper and ask them to draw a picture of our
mortal world we are living in during the song.
Read or have a family member read the following:
The scriptures are full of invitations to “remember.” In one chapter of the Book of Mormon, Helaman uses the word “remember” 11
times. Before we began this mortal journey, every one of us knew our Heavenly Father and the Savior Jesus Christ personally. Every
one of us was taught the plan of salvation that we are now living. However, our mortal eyes and minds cannot remember. But God
has not left us without a way to remember these things. In John 14:26 Jesus said that the: “. . . Holy Ghost . . . shall teach you all
things, and bring all things to your remembrance.”
Discussion:
Ask and discuss the following questions:
1. What and how does the spirit help us remember about this life?
2. How does living in obedience help us to remember our purpose on earth?
3. What things in our lives and in the world can distract us from focusing on our purpose here on earth?
You may choose to read the following during this question:
The Book of Mormon explains how a people can get off course on the journey. It reads: “They were slothful, and forgot to exercise
their faith and diligence . . . and they did not progress in their journey; therefore, they tarried in the wilderness, or did not travel a direct
course, and were afflicted with hunger and thirst.” (Alma 37:41-42)
4. How does reading the scriptures every day help us stay focused on our journey?
Object Lesson Game:
1. Print out the two game boards on the following pages. (Works best to print out in color).
2. Gather one game piece (such as a penny or a bean), a stop watch (http://www.online-stopwatch.com/ works well if you have a
computer close by), and a dice.
3. Put out the game “The Journey” and put the game piece on start. Give each member of the family 70 seconds to try to make it from
start to finish (only 1 person at a time plays the game). Point out that we only have a certain amount of time in this life to make it to
our destination (being worthy of the Celestial Kingdom). To play, the person rolls the dice and moves that many spaces. You must follow
the directions on the circle you land on. If you land on a blank spot, you roll again. The player continues until the time is reached.
No one will be able to make it in 70 seconds.
4. Put out the game “The Journey II.” Explain that this board does not have “distractions” and “wrong choices” that will slow them
down. Give each member of the family 70 seconds to try to make it from start to finish. Everyone, if playing at a normal speed, will
make it in 70 seconds.
5. After the game talk with your family about how we can be slowed down in our journey, and that if we choose the right, read our
scriptures, and do all the things we are taught, that we will be able to progress faster on our journey.
