Occupied: Behind Barbed 

Wire - Exhibition 

An exhibition of artwork and artefacts 

made by those deported whilst in their 

internment camps, including items 

recycled from Red Cross parcels, such as 

the cardboard, the string, the cellophane 

packing material, the tins themselves and 

the wooden parcel crates. These were all 

turned into a variety of objects. Unless 

we tell the story while the last of these 

deportees are alive all the unique, 

moving and sometimes beautiful stories 

would be lost, as would all of the 

personal collections in people's attics - 

crucially, these items tell the story of 

internment. They speak of the 

experience of deportation and 

internment of these 2,200 people 

deported from the Channel Islands 

during World War II.

The Queen by Chris Levine 

This year Jersey Heritage joins the 

Island's Jubilee celebrations with an 

exhibition called The Queen by Chris 

Levine. Well known in England for his 

striking holographic portraits and 

abstractions, in 2004 Chris Levine was 

commissioned to make a portrait of the 

Queen as part of Jersey's 

celebrations of its 800-year old 

relationship with the monarchy. The 

resulting pictures – both traditional and 

lenticular - have revolutionized the art of 

royal portraiture, taking it into a visual, 

technological, and psychological realm 

never before attempted. The Queen by 

Chris Levine is a display of some of those 

images and 3-D data sets of Her 

Majesty.

1781 The Battle of Jersey 

- Exhibition 

On display for the first time in Jersey is 

the famous painting by Copley, 

The Death of Major Peirson, which 

normally hangs at the Tate Britain. The 

most important painting to the history of 

the Island, Copley’s work represents the 

spirit of the Battle of Jersey, a pivotal 

point in the Island’s history. In 2012 we 

have a chance to bring the painting to its 

spiritual home and exhibit it with 

artefacts from the event itself, including: 

a bullet fired during the battle and an 

actual drum that is shown in the painting.

The Past Unravels – 

Exhibition 

This unique exhibition transforms the 

Merchant’s House into an exciting space, 

as artist Karen Le Roy Harris brings to life 

the house, its history and the people who 

lived there in the 1860's. This exhibition 

will interpret all the family members that 

once lived in the house as well as the 

function of each of their different rooms 

on display, giving every nook and cranny 

a personality.

TB Davis - The Only Sailor 

in the Fleet - Exhibition 

Between 1922 and 1940, in the era 

of hunger marches, the Wall Street 

Crash and the Great Depression, 

Jersey-born Thomas Benjamin Davis 

gave away an estimated million 

pounds to what he deemed to be 

good causes. The greatest 

philanthropist the Island has ever 

known, Davis was born in poverty, 

yet when he died 75 years later, he 

was a multi-millionaire. This semipermanent 

exhibition tells his story, 

from humble beginnings as a 13 year 

old fisherman to becoming a qualified 

extra master under sail. His history 

will be traced through the years 

when he made his fortune in 

Southern Africa to the glory of 

owning the racing schooner 

Westward.

Exhibition of Paintings 

Browse the art on display, upstairs, at

Philippe d'Auvergne, the 

Prince Behind the Tower 

- Exhibition 

Jerseyman Philippe d'Auvergne, 

(1754-1816) was an explorer, 

scientist, artist, naval officer, 

administrator, spymaster and ruler, 

albeit briefly, of a small European 

state. During the French Revolution 

he was an honorary French aristocrat 

and an officer in the Royal Navy 

serving the British Crown. His 

interests were those of a wealthy 

country gentleman of the period and 

here at La Hougue Bie he built a 

Gothic folly - the Prince’s Tower. This 

is his story.

The atmosphere at Jersey Live

Heavy Machine-Gun 

Turret Bunker 

One of the few surviving examples, 

named sechsschartentürme bunkers 

(literally “six-shooting turret”), once 

proliferated along the Atlantic Wall. It 

is possible to access the interior of 

the cupola, equipped with a 

deactivated MG34 machine-gun, 

and peer through the optics to see a 

landscape viewed as a potential 

invasion point by the German 

garrison.

The Sunday Cycle 

Take this opportunity to see, smell 

and hear what the motorists miss. 

Enjoy a short cycle ride with Blue 

Badge Guide Arthur Lamy and 

discover the heart of the island. This 

route passes the Jersey War Tunnels, 

Morel Farm, St Lawrence Church and 

the Parish Hall, before an easy 

freewheel through one of Jersey’s 

prettiest valleys back to the beach 

side cycle track. Utilising the island’s 

cycle-friendly 15mph Green Lanes, 

this tour gives a great insight into 

local farming, the Occupation and the 

Jersey way of life. Each tour has 

several stops to enjoy the island’s 

history and culture, and usually a 

refreshment stop if time allows.

Coastal Defence Gun 

Casemate 

This is the only coastal defence 

bunker in the St Ouen’s Bay area to 

retain its original gun, and is 

practically complete. The gun had a 

range of 10 – 12km and was part of 

a network of similar weapons along 

the coast.

Jersey Motorcycle Rally 

2012 

All motorcycles are invited to come 

along and circumnavigate the island 

with stops at St Catherine's Breakwater 

and Le Braye. The purpose of the rally is 

not to have the fastest time around the 

Island but to safely complete the 

predetermined route. Starting and 

finishing at Weighbridge Place, St Helier

An exhibition of artwork and artefacts 

made by those deported whilst in their 

internment camps, including items 

recycled from Red Cross parcels, such as 

the cardboard, the string, the cellophane 

packing material, the tins themselves and 

the wooden parcel crates. These were all 

turned into a variety of objects. Unless 

we tell the story while the last of these 

deportees are alive all the unique, 

moving and sometimes beautiful stories 

would be lost, as would all of the 

personal collections in people's attics - 

crucially, these items tell the story of 

internment. They speak of the 

experience of deportation and 

internment of these 2,200 people 

deported from the Channel Islands 

during World War II.

The Queen by Chris Levine 

This year Jersey Heritage joins the 

Island's Jubilee celebrations with an 

exhibition called The Queen by Chris 

Levine. Well known in England for his 

striking holographic portraits and 

abstractions, in 2004 Chris Levine was 

commissioned to make a portrait of the 

Queen as part of Jersey's 

celebrations of its 800-year old 

relationship with the monarchy. The 

resulting pictures – both traditional and 

lenticular - have revolutionized the art of 

royal portraiture, taking it into a visual, 

technological, and psychological realm 

never before attempted. The Queen by 

Chris Levine is a display of some of those 

images and 3-D data sets of Her 

Majesty.

On display for the first time in Jersey is 

the famous painting by Copley, 

The Death of Major Peirson, which 

normally hangs at the Tate Britain. The 

most important painting to the history of 

the Island, Copley’s work represents the 

spirit of the Battle of Jersey, a pivotal 

point in the Island’s history. In 2012 we 

have a chance to bring the painting to its 

spiritual home and exhibit it with 

artefacts from the event itself, including: 

a bullet fired during the battle and an 

actual drum that is shown in the painting.

TB Davis - The Only Sailor 

in the Fleet - Exhibition 

Between 1922 and 1940, in the era 

of hunger marches, the Wall Street 

Crash and the Great Depression, 

Jersey-born Thomas Benjamin Davis 

gave away an estimated million 

pounds to what he deemed to be 

good causes. The greatest 

philanthropist the Island has ever 

known, Davis was born in poverty, 

yet when he died 75 years later, he 

was a multi-millionaire. This semipermanent 

exhibition tells his story, 

from humble beginnings as a 13 year 

old fisherman to becoming a qualified 

extra master under sail. His history 

will be traced through the years 

when he made his fortune in 

Southern Africa to the glory of 

owning the racing schooner 

Westward.

Philippe d'Auvergne, the 

Prince Behind the Tower 

- Exhibition 

Jerseyman Philippe d'Auvergne, 

(1754-1816) was an explorer, 

scientist, artist, naval officer, 

administrator, spymaster and ruler, 

albeit briefly, of a small European 

state. During the French Revolution 

he was an honorary French aristocrat 

and an officer in the Royal Navy 

serving the British Crown. His 

interests were those of a wealthy 

country gentleman of the period and 

here at La Hougue Bie he built a 

Gothic folly - the Prince’s Tower. This 

is his story.

Stepping Out

National Trust for Jersey - 

Birds on the edge 

The cliff tops along the Island’s north 

coast are amongst the most 

spectacular scenery in the Channel 

Islands. These rugged cliffs are home to 

seabirds at their base as well as 

songbirds inhabiting the land at their 

tops. Sadly, following the abandonment 

of farming along much of this wild area, 

the diversity of wildlife has dramatically 

decreased. Join Dr. Glyn Young, 

Conservation Biologist at Durrell, to 

walk along the cliff path to see those 

birds that survive and learn about 

exciting plans to restore the area and 

return the formerly resident Red-billed 

chough.

Areas of Natural Interest 

La Lande de Ouest 

Part of the dry coastal heathland lying 

above the cliffs along the greater part of 

the south-west coast. A designated Site 

of Special Interest (SSI) and rich in flora 

and fauna, this area is an important part 

of theisland’s landscape, and biodiversity. 

A great area for walking and bird watching.

Le Noir Pré 

Often known simply as “The Orchid 

Field”, this unique site actually consists 

of two distinct but adjoining wet 

meadows. Le Noir Pré and the smaller 

Le Clos du Seigneur. The site is one of 

the last remaining strongholds of the 

Jersey Orchid or loose-flowered 

Orchid (Orchis Laxiflora). Orchid 

flowering season May and June.

Le Blanches Banques 

The sand dune system at the southern 

end of St Ouen’s Bay is recognised as 

an SSI and more than 400 plantspecies 

have been recorded here. It also provides 

home to the super Jersey Green Lizard.

Les Landes 

This coastal heathland is the most 

spectacular aspect of Jersey’s wild 

environments. Les Landes is Jersey’s 

largest single expanse of maritime 

heathland covering 160 hectares and 

bound by 3 km of high granite cliffs.

Portelet Common 

With a mixture of dramatic sea views and 

a habitat typical of an area subjected to 

the prevailing south-westerly wind, the 

common has thick gorse cover, dwarf 

shrub heathland and lichen-rich grassland. 

Peaking at one sixty one metres above 

sea level and covering thirty one 

hectares this scenery is not to be missed.

Ramsar Sites 

These are areas listed on the Ramstar 

List of Westland’s of International 

Importance which concerns the 

conservation and wise use of wetlands 

and their resources. Jersey has four! 

These magnificent sites are; the 

south-east coast of Jersey, Le 

Minquiers, Les Ècréhous, and Les 

Dirouilles, and Les Pierres de lecq (The 

Paternosters). These sites are truly 

unique and worth a visit; however, 

three of these sites are offshore reefs 

and require a trip by boat. Check out 

the “Activities” section of the 

operators who can take you on a short 

boat trip to see these sites. The south 

coast area can be walked around and 

guided walks are available (contact 

Jersey Walk Adventures – see 

“Activities”). Important! If you wish to 

walk around the area independently 

please seek advice first as the tide rises 

rapidly and you can become stranded if 

unprepared. Knowledge of the tides is 

essentially. Jersey Tourism can provide 

advice if necessary but recommends 

that you employ a guide. See “Walking” 

section of this guide.

Reservoirs 

There are several reservoirs within 

the island which can be walked 

around. These include Queen’s Valley 

and Val de la Mare. Other reservoirs 

include Millbrook, Grands Vaux, 

Handois, Mourier Valley and 

Dannemarche.

St Catherine’s Woods 

Also known as Rozel Woods, this 

woodland is set in a deep-cut, 

steep-sided valley. A stream running 

through the valley floor has helped 

develop a wide range of habitats 

within the woodland.

St Ouen’s Pond 

(La Mare au Seigneur). 

Probably the most significant wetland 

in Jersey, it is a dedicated nature 

reserve with open water, reed beds 

and a marshy perimeter providing 

habitats for fish, insects, flowers and 

birds, including the Marsh Harrier 

which can often be seen gliding 

above the pond.

Built on a rocky islet in St Aubin's 

Bay, Elizabeth Castle defended 

Jersey for more than 300 years. 

The castle is accessible at low 

tide by foot or the castle ferry 

which will transport you across 

the bay to and from the castle. 

Elizabeth Castle is a perfect place 

to spend a day exploring Jersey's 

history. Work began on the 

castle in the 1590s and it was 

home to Sir Walter Raleigh while 

he was Governor of Jersey and 

the future King Charles II sought 

refuge at Elizabeth Castle during 

the English Civil War. During the 

German Occupation the castle 

was refortified and used as one of 

the stongpoints commanding the 

sea approaches to St Helier. Climb 

the battlements, explore the 

turrets and bunkers and discover 

the Hermitage where St Helier is 

thought to have lived around 500 

A.D. Visit the exhibitions which 

explain the role of the castle in 

Jersey’s history and share the 

experience of the soldiers who 

were garrisoned here.

Le Don Hilton, or La Caumine a Marie 

Best as it is also known, is an old 

guard house beside the beach in St 

Ouen’s Bay. It is also called the “white 

house” due to its distinctive whitewashed

thrift in Spring and sea lavender in 

summer, this fabulous site can be 

hired from the National Trust for 

Jersey on a minimum 3 day basis. The

Garden Treasure 

Everyone loves a garden! Whether you are a novice, 

an experienced enthusiast or simply an armchair 

gardener, you will find lots to interest you in Samarès 

Manor’s richly planted gardens; they contain a 

multitude of environmental conditions and design 

styles and are aptly set in the tranquil grounds of one 

of Jersey’s foremost stately homes. 

Originally created in the 1920s by millionaire 

shipping magnate and philanthropist, Sir James 

Knott, the gardens have, in recent years, seen 

significant developments and the introduction of 

major new areas of planting. The exuberant exotics 

garden, the Mediterranean style drought garden, the 

rose and lavender garden and conservation areas are 

good examples. This strategy takes the gardens 

further down the road to creating Jersey’s Kew. 

However, much of the original design still remains 

including the Japanese Garden, built using limestone 

from the north of England, numerous ponds, islands, 

water gardens and camellia plantations. 

Many of the culinary herbs are used in the Herb 

Garden Café, adding flavour and attractive garnish to 

delicious home-made dishes. The chef’s garden is an 

exceptionally fertile area where culinary delicacies 

are grown. 

Education and Family 

Learn about the wildlife and plants that abound at 

Samarès with the family nature quiz or explore the 

living willow labyrinth, the jungle path and 

woodland walks. Those interested in history and 

heritage can tour the manor house or visit the Rural

Samarés Manor’s Herb Garden 

Take a bird’s eye view of Samarès Manor’s spectacular 

walled herb garden, one of the most comprehensive 

in Europe. The viewing platform, high above the 

walls, adds an extra dimension to this unique 

collection of herbs. The formal planting scheme is the 

work of internationally renowned garden designer, 

John Brookes. The garden is a venue for popular talks 

on herbs and their uses.

Since the Jersey Pearl family started the business 

27 years ago, the pearl industry has seen huge 

developments both in terms of its levels of production, 

as well as the styles and colours now available on the 

market. 

Freshwater pearls, which are grown in large mussels, are 

naturally found in shades ranging from warm white 

through to blush pink and 

pale purple, nowadays 

however these natural gems 

are also being dyed after 

harvesting to create the most 

fantastic range of rainbow 

colours, from peppermint 

green and midnight blue 

through to hot fuchsia pink 

and honey yellow. 

Within the last decade there 

has also been expansion 

within the shape of the 

freshwater pearl- traditionally 

round, oval or pear-drop

Jersey’s Home of Jewellery 

Before moving to the spacious surroundings 

of Lion Park, Jersey Goldsmiths opened on 

the 21st July 1986 on the Five Mile Road. 

They took over what used to be ‘Clumps’ 

nightclub, equipped with two swimming pools 

and a revolving bar! 

2003 saw Jersey Goldsmiths relocate to their 

St. Lawrence site; Lion Park, which has recently 

undergone an elegant refurbishment. Still 

managed by a local family, now with four 

generations involved, their commitment to 

beautiful Jersey jewellery, a memorable shopping 

experience and education is stronger than ever. 

Their 25th anniversary celebrated recently was 

dedicated to all aspects of their jewellery world. 

Their expertise in creativity, design and jewellery 

care was highlighted throughout the year. Visit 

their showroom in 2012 to learn all about gold, 

silver and gemstones from around the world. Be 

inspired by their collections and the wonderful 

ideas behind them, including ‘Roseanna’ 

a collection designed by a local art and design 

student to mark their 25th anniversary year.

History of Gold 

Since the beginning of civilisation man has 

placed great value upon gold. Over the centuries 

it has taken many forms, from gold nuggets, 

ingots and coins, even as far back as 4,000BC 

to the Egyptians using it to adorn themselves 

and decorate the tombs and temples of the 

Egyptian empire. 

Gold mining countries are mainly Australia, 

U.S.A, China, Peru and Russia, but the world 

leaders are South Africa. They have been 

mining in this region for over 100 years, 

although the largest gold nugget was discovered 

in Australia in 1869 weighing a massive 

72 kilograms, a replica is now displayed at 

Jersey Goldsmiths. 

The founder’s grand-daughter Julia Williams, 

now manager at Jersey Goldsmiths, says 

“We have, over the years, welcomed 7.5 million 

visitors to Jersey Goldsmiths and I feel that 

we are ambassadors for Jersey. Our visitors 

leave with a beautiful piece of Jersey jewellery 

and a keepsake of their holiday which is very 

special to me.” 

In the last 25 years we have sold 3,484,500 

inches of chain which is 217,787 necklaces - the 

equivalent or 55 miles of chain, more than the 

length of Jersey’s coastline.

Driving & Parking 

Speed limits 

Jersey roads and country lanes are 

narrow and winding so please drive 

with care and observe the 

40mph/64km all island maximum 

speed limit. In addition to the 

above general speed limit, you 

should also be aware of slower limits 

on certain stretches of road, such as 

20/30mph/32/48km in built up 

areas and 15mph/24km in Green 

Lanes. 

Seatbelts 

Drivers and adults must wear seat 

belts in both front and rear seats. 

Children must wear seat belts or a 

suitable child/infant restraint, in 

both front and rear seats. 

Your duty in case 

of accidents 

If involved in an accident stop. 

You must: Contact the Police who 

will advise the correct course of 

action. Failure to do so is a criminal 

offence. 

Call the Police 

If damage is caused to any 

unattended vehicle or property 

Even if your vehicle is damaged and is 

the only one involved or, If any injury 

is caused to any person or animal. 

In any other case you must, if 

required, exchange personal details

What are Paycards? 

Paycards are used to 

pay for parking 

throughout Jersey. 

They have to be used: 

MONDAY TO SATURDAY 

(INCLUSIVE) 8.00 am to 5.00 pm 

There are also a number of on-street 

and residents parking zones where 

parking is chargeable after 5.00pm 

and on Sundays. Please carefully 

check parking signs for details. 

You must use them whenever you 

park on-street (RED and YELLOW) 

zones and in all car parks where you 

see the above sign: 

The charge for parking on-street is 

1 Unit per stay. This would be 20 

minutes in a YELLOW zone and 1 

hour in a RED zone. 

In car parks the charge is variable – 

see the notice boards at the 

entrance and within each car park 

for details of the tariff. 

You can buy books of Paycards 

wherever you see a sign similar to 

the one above displayed in shops, 

garages, hotels, your hire-car 

company, the car ferry, the Tourist 

Information Office or the Car Park 

Administration Office in Sand Street. 

They are available in three 

denominations – 1 Unit, 2 Units and 

4 Units. There are 10 Paycards in 

each book, but you can buy them 

singly. 

Upon arrival at the parking place: 

Decide how long you intend to stay 

(remember on-street parking and 

some car parks are limited to 

short-stay). 

Calculate the cost from the notice 

board (on-street parking is 1 Unit 

per visit). 

Scratch off five panels – MONTH, 

DAY, DATE, HOUR AND MINUTE 

(to next 5 minutes) to show the 

time of your arrival or the start of 

the next charging period if parking 

during a non chargeable period 

(overnight or Sunday). 

When using more than one Paycard 

it is important to scratch off each 

one identically. 

Display the validated Paycards by 

placing them face-up on the 

dashboard so that all the details on 

each card displayed can be clearly 

seen from outside the vehicle. You 

will also find instructions of the 

reverse of each Paycard.

Limited Parking 

A team of professional lifeguards patrol key beaches from mid May to the end of 

September. Look out for the red and yellow flags which indicate the patrolled 

areas for swimming. Swim within the flags, but note that when a red flag is flying 

the conditions are dangerous and unsuitable for swimming. Jersey has some of 

the largest tidal flows in the world so take care when bathing or exploring the 

seashore. The beach lifeguard team is only too happy to advise swimmers 

regarding beach safety, please ask.
