CSC: To Whom do you credit your success in Civil Services Examination?
Deepa S. Mudhol: Myself Deepa S. Mudhol and I give credit to my family and Abhay Thakur
Sir (Synchronous IAS) for his valuable guidance on General Studies, Essay and Interview.
CSC: What is the Secret of your success?
Deepa S. Mudhol: My father is Public Servant, his motivation tend me to choose IAS as a
career.
CSC: What about time management? How many hours should one devote for preparation,
on regular basis?
Deepa S. Mudhol: Effective reading for 10-12 hours on regular basis would be enough.
CSC: After your success in the preliminary examination, do you feel you could have scored
better by introducing some changes in your method of preparation?
Deepa S. Mudhol: No. In both the attempts, I had much above the Cut-off score.
CSC: How can one score well in Essay. GS and interview?
Deepa S. Mudhol: Better “analytical skills” would help in getting good score in Essay, G.S.
and Interview. Essay doesn’t need special preparation.
CSC: Besides textbooks which newspapers, magazines and books of general interest should
one read? How one should read newspaper?
Deepa S. Mudhol: One should regularly read “The Hindu” and ‘The Economic Times’. As far
as magazine is concerned, Civil Services Chronicle is the best magazine around. Further,
while reading newspapers one should identify the ongoing issues and capture the points
that are relevant for exam. Don’t spend much time on the politics of the issues. Correct
guidance would save time and energy both, as in my case Sir (Abhay Thakur) was always
available.
CSC: What, in your opinion, should be the qualities of a good magazine for CSE?
Deepa S. Mudhol: A good magazine should reduce the burden on the aspirants. It should get
the pulse of UPSC.
CSC: In your opinion at which level of education should one start preparing for civil services
and what should be minimum period of time required to prepare for CSE?
Deepa S. Mudhol: Depending on his/her economic background, support from family and
his/her preparedness he/she can start preparation anytime after graduation. 2 yrs of time
for preparation should be minimum. In any case I started my preparation just after the
graduation.
CSC: What is the importance of medium of expression in the exams like CSE?
Deepa S. Mudhol: Medium of expression plays key role in both mains and interview.
Especially in interview if the translator doesn’t do the job well, it will have effect on the
interview score (when medium is other than English).
CSC: Does the educational, financial and demographic status of the family of an aspirant
have any impact on his/her preparations?
Deepa S. Mudhol: Since the CSE exam requires some support from coaching institutes,
financial status of aspirant will have direct effect on the preparation. Supportive
environment is essential during the preparation.
CSC: Did you join any coaching institute at any stage of your preparation? What is your
opinion about the role of coaching institutes in the preparation for Civil Services
Examination?
Deepa S. Mudhol: In the changing trends of this exam, coaching institutes may play a
significant role. In my case, Synchronous Institute (Abhay Thakur Sir), where I attended the
classroom programme helped me a lot in achieving 30 th Rank. Consistent guidance from
Abhay Thakur Sir on General Studies, Essay and Interview made me comfortable.
CSC: What is more important for this exam, intelligence or hard work?
Deepa S. Mudhol: Correct mix of both is essential for this exam. Intelligence would help the
candidate to achieve his/her goal with less number of attempts.
CSC: What is the importance of G.S.?
Deepa S. Mudhol: G.S. directly covers 600 marks, while indirectly it covers around 1100
marks. So one cannot afford to lose such a huge impact.
CSC: Now from 2011, UPSC has done some structural changes in the pattern of Preliminary
Exam. What do you suggest to the future aspirants in this regard?
Deepa S. Mudhol: Nothing is impossible, The word itself contains I M possible, and I strongly
recommend Synchronous IAS for G.S. preparation.
