Nursing Director of the Year Award<br />

Sunni Herman, Executive Vice President, <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> at Rockleigh<br />

The <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> at Rockleigh is very proud to announce that Director of Nursing,<br />

Ericson Riguerra has received the prestigious “Director of Nursing of the Year<br />

Award” from the New Jersey Association Directors of Nursing Administration<br />

(NJADONA) at a presentation on April 15, <strong>2013</strong> in Atlantic City. The NJADONA is<br />

a non-profit association for long-term care facilities’ nursing administrators that<br />

concerns itself with legislation, standards of care, communication, continuing<br />

education, and scholarships.<br />

This is the highest award a nurse in a long-term care facility can receive from the<br />

State and is testament to Eric’s tremendous ability. Eric is one of the youngest ever<br />

to be honored. The honoree is chosen<br />

by a committee from nominations of<br />

peers, family members, and staff.<br />

Eric started as a nurse in 1998 at the<br />

<strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> & Rehabilitation Center<br />

in River Vale after completing his<br />

RN training at Bergen Community<br />

College. When the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> at<br />

Rockleigh (JHR) opened in 2001, he<br />

became a charge nurse and, over<br />

time, moved up the ladder, becoming<br />

a Clinical Nurse Manager, Assistant<br />

Director of Nursing in 2006, and then<br />

Director three years later. Eric has a<br />

pivotal role in ensuring the highest<br />

quality of care provided to JHR’s residents.<br />

His job is not 9 to 5. He often<br />

comes in on weekends and off-shifts<br />

to provide appropriate supervision of staff and to speak with family members. His<br />

keen intuition and clinical knowledge help ensure the well-being of the residents.<br />

After receiving a standing ovation from over 500 attendees, Eric said, “it’s very<br />

flattering and an honor to receive this award. It has a lot of meaning to me.<br />

However, the award is for the entire staff in the building and the facility as well.<br />

I would not have received this award without the help of the staff—from the certified<br />

nursing assistants to the administrative nurses. In order to be a successful<br />

nurse, it’s important to show empathy and care for our residents and treat the staff<br />

with respect.”<br />

Eric came to the United States from the<br />

Philippines and received his training as<br />

a registered nurse in this country.<br />

Married to Lori, who is also a nurse,<br />

Eric is a resident of Bergenfield.<br />

When the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> at Rockleigh opened its<br />

doors in 2001, it was a state-of-the-art facility in<br />

every way, including its outstanding collection of<br />

photographs. These photographs were contributed<br />

by some gifted photographers who filled JHR’s<br />

hallways with beautiful and interesting examples<br />

of their work.<br />

“During the construction stage, we had discussions<br />

as to how we should go about creating art work for<br />

the facility,” said now President and CEO of the<br />

<strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> Family, Chuck Berkowitz. “We talked<br />

to Julian Hyman, M.D., the late Irving Swire, and<br />

Gordon Rapp. Each one, a very skilled photographer,<br />

offered me the opportunity to look at their<br />

collections. It was love at first sight! These wonderful<br />

photographers formed an Art Committee. They<br />

contributed their photos for the benefit of the<br />

residents and collaborated with us to choose individual<br />

photographs. They also worked with JHR’s<br />

engineers to correctly hang the photos.” The committee<br />

expanded to include Elaine Hyman, Julian’s<br />

wife and a talented sculptor, Roz Swire, Gail Bokor,<br />

and the late Syril Rubin.<br />

The Art Committee met every few weeks. At every<br />

meeting, Julian Hyman, Irving Swire, and Gordon<br />

Rapp each brought slides of their favorite photos<br />

taken on many local trips and during vacations to<br />

various countries. In order for a photo to be chosen<br />

for what became galleries on each floor of JHR, “all<br />

three members of the committee had to approve the<br />

choice,” said Dr. Hyman. Over a six month period,<br />

the group came up with the collection of photographs<br />

that still grace the walls of JHR and bring<br />

pleasure to residents and visitors alike.<br />

“We tried to make it as if you’ve traveled around<br />

the world,” said Julian Hyman, with photographs<br />

taken during visits each photographer had made all<br />

over the United States and to foreign countries.<br />

“We also set up a number of photos that were logically<br />

grouped together, such as animals, scenery,<br />

and people. It was decided to make all the prints<br />

20” x 30.” They had to be enlarged by someone very<br />

capable,” he added. So the committee turned to Fuji<br />

Film which had a small outdoor kiosk in<br />

Hackensack where they enlarge prints taken from<br />

slides. “Unfortunately Fuji closed down the kiosk<br />

because it was unprofitable,” Dr. Hyman explained.<br />

The committee then hired the Tenafly Camera Shop<br />

and Avigail Umanzor who complete the project.<br />

Dr. Hyman became interested in photography as a<br />

child when his folks bought him a small camera. “I<br />

always took pictures,” he said, noting that his love<br />

of photography continued when he went to Korea<br />

during the war as an Army surgeon. Soon after his<br />

arrival, an officer ordered him to go to Pusan, located<br />

on the southernmost tip of the Korean<br />

Peninsula. He caught a flight on a DC3 where there<br />

was no place to sit other than the floor. However<br />

uncomfortable that trip was, his travels around<br />

Korea underscored his love of photography, which<br />

he has kept up to the present day.<br />

“My wife and I filled the walls of our house in<br />

Teaneck with our art for 50 years,” Julian said.<br />

“Elaine was a professional sculptor and we saved<br />

ten or so of her works as well as my photographs<br />

for display at our home.” In addition, the Hymans<br />

had exhibits of their work at galleries in New York<br />

City. “One gallery did a show of both our works—<br />

my wife’s in the front and mine in the back.”<br />

When the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> <strong>Assisted</strong> <strong>Living</strong> in River<br />

Vale opened in 2007, “we went back to the original<br />

group and asked if they would repeat the process,”<br />

said Chuck Berkowitz. “They were very enthusiastic.<br />

Over the years, we’ve gotten rave reviews on<br />

the quality of the photos and the opportunity to see<br />

pictures of places you may never travel to.”<br />

“The photographs have really transformed JHAL<br />

from a health care facility to a homelike place,” said<br />

JHAL’s Executive Director, Lauren Levant. At the<br />

same time, “many visitors have said that coming to<br />

JHAL and seeing this collection is like visiting a<br />

museum.”

<strong>2013</strong> Strategic Planning<br />

Charles P. Berkowitz, President & CEO, <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> Family<br />

The <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> Family has formed a strategic planning committee to look forward<br />

as the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> had done many times over its 98 year history in an attempt to<br />

stay ahead of the curve in meeting the changing needs of the elderly in our catchment<br />

area. The committee consists of both members of our Boards of Directors and the<br />

executive leadership of each of our agencies. We are very pleased with those who<br />

have volunteered from the Boards of Directors and the committee is well balanced<br />

so that all of our entities are represented. The committee has met on two occasions<br />

and recommended to the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> Family Board of Directors that a consultant<br />

be retained to help us explore the many alternatives which lend themselves to the<br />

changing health care scene and to the unmet needs of the elderly in our community.<br />

At the April 25, <strong>2013</strong> meeting of the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> Family, this recommendation was<br />

approved and a search is now underway to identify those professionals who could<br />

assist in accomplishing this initiative. We have identified a number of outstanding<br />

candidates with the help of the committee members and if you have a suggestion, we<br />

are open to it.<br />

The last strategic planning committee in the 1990’s was responsible for laying the<br />

tracks for the accomplishment of developing, planning and overseeing the building<br />

of the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> at Rockleigh in 2001 and the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> <strong>Assisted</strong> <strong>Living</strong> in<br />

2005. That process started over 10 years before and consisted of working with the<br />

community to ascertain their insight as to the needs in Bergen County. The longterm<br />

care community of the <strong>Jewish</strong> Federation of NNJ played a role in this process.<br />

Members of that committee traveled with me to see a number of other facilities which<br />

were state-of-the-art at the time. We traveled west, south and north to see these so<br />

that we were in a better position to move forward. They were also involved in the<br />

sale of the Jersey City facilities.<br />

During these two committee meetings a number of ideas were discussed as potential<br />

projects that ranged from housing, a Continuing Care Retirement Community and/or<br />

independent living for both low and moderate income units; a vocational/special<br />

needs facility; additional long-term care beds; expanded outpatient rehabilitation<br />

services; or infrastructure/office space for the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> Family, Finance Office,<br />

<strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> Foundation of NNJ and the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> at <strong>Home</strong> services. Other<br />

thoughts ranged from a research center for geriatrics, a restaurant for those living in<br />

housing, or housing for staff.<br />

It is anticipated that after picking a consultant and refining exactly which services we<br />

determine would provide the greatest benefit for the community, that members of<br />

the committee will again explore those services through some travel to see the leaders<br />

in the field.<br />

In addition to looking at services which will require the construction of new infrastructure,<br />

we will explore services such as the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the<br />

Elderly (PACE). This program is national and provides comprehensive long-term<br />

care services for Medicaid and Medicare recipients that enable them to remain in<br />

their own home. The common theme in most of these programs is to create a way for<br />

the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> Family and its constituent agencies to enable the elderly to remain<br />

in their own home.<br />

We know that you will join the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> in these endeavors as you have always<br />

done in the past and look forward to your support of our meeting the needs of the<br />

elderly in our community.<br />

Sophie Winters, who lives with her<br />

family in Demarest, NJ, decided to do<br />

her bat mitzvah project as a volunteer<br />

at the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> at Rockleigh. She<br />

trained her black Labrador “Sam,”<br />

short for Samson, as a therapy dog<br />

and visited residents at JHR on a<br />

regular basis, usually on Sunday<br />

mornings. In addition, Sophie decided<br />

to ask those who attended her bat<br />

mitzvah on March 9th at Temple<br />

Emanu-El in Closter to<br />

contribute to one of<br />

three organizations<br />

rather than give her a<br />

gift. The three groups<br />

are: <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> at<br />

Rockleigh; Hackensack<br />

University Medical<br />

Center, in memory of<br />

her father’s father; or<br />

the Pat Summitt<br />

Foundation, in honor<br />

of the head coach of<br />

the University of Tennessee basketball<br />

team who has been diagnosed with<br />

early Alzheimer’s disease, and in<br />

memory of Sophie’s great grandmother,<br />

Goldie who suffered from the<br />

same affliction. “I had a specific reason<br />

for each one. It was closely related<br />

to me or a family member,” Sophie<br />

said. More than $3,000 has been<br />

donated to the JHR on her behalf.<br />

International to be certified. The test<br />

consisted of 15 tasks that had to be<br />

successfully completed. “Thirteen<br />

were easy, but two were tough and I<br />

wasn’t sure we were going to pass the<br />

test. Training Sam required a lot of<br />

repetition. It didn’t happen overnight<br />

because he didn’t follow commands<br />

right away. But it was worth it. I’m<br />

still enjoying it,” Sophie explained.<br />

Her mother Nancy adds that “she has<br />

seen several residents<br />

regularly and they<br />

look forward to seeing<br />

Sophie. Sophie enjoys<br />

seeing how happy it<br />

makes them and she’s<br />

sad when she has to<br />

leave.”<br />

Asked what satisfaction<br />

she gets from her<br />

visits, Sophie says “I<br />

love animals. I love<br />

being around my dog. It’s something I<br />

have combined with something that<br />

helps other people.”<br />

Pet therapy is a regular part of the<br />

Recreation Therapy Program at the<br />

JHR, as well as at the <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong><br />

<strong>Assisted</strong> <strong>Living</strong> in River Vale. JHR’s<br />

Director of Recreation, Tracey<br />

Couliboly said, “there are therapeutic<br />

benefits to holding pets. It can help<br />

lower blood pressure and reduce agitation.<br />

Master Chef Comes to <strong>Jewish</strong> <strong>Home</strong> <strong>Assisted</strong> <strong>Living</strong><br />

As reality shows have become a significant part of<br />

“Pop Culture,” cooking shows appear on all the major<br />

television networks. JHAL recently combined Hell’s<br />

Kitchen and Master Chef and held its first Mystery Box<br />

Cookoff.<br />

The contestants included JHAL’s own Jean Duroseau,<br />

Director of Food Services and JHR’s Dominic<br />

Ackerman, Executive Chef. As a surprise to the<br />

contestants, JHAL was able to secure a celebrity chef.<br />

Chef Dana Cohen, third runner up of Hell’s Kitchen<br />

Season 10, was the Master of Ceremonies. Dana, a<br />

native of the town of River Vale was honored to be a<br />

part of this unique experience. The judges were two<br />

residents currently residing in JHAL, Joe Leeds and<br />

Helen Goldberg.<br />

Prior to the event, JHAL staff met with Dana Cohen<br />

and created a two-course competition. Neither of the<br />

contestants were aware of the ingredients until the<br />

Mystery Box was revealed. The contestants had 20<br />

minutes to create an original first course (appetizer).<br />

There were 5 ingredients that were required to be<br />

used: salmon, wonton wrappers, honey roasted<br />

peanuts, avocados, and mangos. In the final preparation<br />

stage, Dana added a sixth ingredient that had to<br />

be utilized, which was blood oranges. After completion,<br />

the two JHAL residents tasted both creations and<br />

then voted on the winning dish.<br />

For the next stage, each contestant had 30 minutes to<br />

create an entrée. The required ingredients included<br />

duck, challah, endive, pataki mushrooms, carrots, and<br />

Dr. Brown’s Cherry soda. Of course, with both dishes,<br />

the contestants had a pantry filled with staple items.<br />

During both parts of the competion, Dana Cohen was<br />

interviewing the chefs trying to find out what they<br />

were creating and what unique techniques they were<br />

using. She also interviewed the resident judges and the<br />

other residents in the audience. The dining room was<br />

filled with delicious aromas that each chef brought to<br />

their creation.<br />

In the end, JHAL resident judges awarded Jean<br />

Duroseau the “Master Chef” winner.<br />

A special thank you to JHR’s Lisa Segelbacher and<br />

Jonathan Fox for their assistance in providing the<br />

necessary ingredients to ensure a true Mystery Box<br />

competition. Additionally our hats off to Dominic for<br />

being a great contestant filled with lots of personality.<br />
