Nursing Director of the Year Award
Sunni Herman, Executive Vice President, Jewish Home at Rockleigh
The Jewish Home at Rockleigh is very proud to announce that Director of Nursing,
Ericson Riguerra has received the prestigious “Director of Nursing of the Year
Award” from the New Jersey Association Directors of Nursing Administration
(NJADONA) at a presentation on April 15, 2013 in Atlantic City. The NJADONA is
a non-profit association for long-term care facilities’ nursing administrators that
concerns itself with legislation, standards of care, communication, continuing
education, and scholarships.
This is the highest award a nurse in a long-term care facility can receive from the
State and is testament to Eric’s tremendous ability. Eric is one of the youngest ever
to be honored. The honoree is chosen
by a committee from nominations of
peers, family members, and staff.
Eric started as a nurse in 1998 at the
Jewish Home & Rehabilitation Center
in River Vale after completing his
RN training at Bergen Community
College. When the Jewish Home at
Rockleigh (JHR) opened in 2001, he
became a charge nurse and, over
time, moved up the ladder, becoming
a Clinical Nurse Manager, Assistant
Director of Nursing in 2006, and then
Director three years later. Eric has a
pivotal role in ensuring the highest
quality of care provided to JHR’s residents.
His job is not 9 to 5. He often
comes in on weekends and off-shifts
to provide appropriate supervision of staff and to speak with family members. His
keen intuition and clinical knowledge help ensure the well-being of the residents.
After receiving a standing ovation from over 500 attendees, Eric said, “it’s very
flattering and an honor to receive this award. It has a lot of meaning to me.
However, the award is for the entire staff in the building and the facility as well.
I would not have received this award without the help of the staff—from the certified
nursing assistants to the administrative nurses. In order to be a successful
nurse, it’s important to show empathy and care for our residents and treat the staff
with respect.”
Eric came to the United States from the
Philippines and received his training as
a registered nurse in this country.
Married to Lori, who is also a nurse,
Eric is a resident of Bergenfield.
On hand for the presentation were
Chuck Berkowitz, President and CEO
of the Jewish Home Family; Sunni
Herman, Executive Vice President of
the Jewish Home at Rockleigh; Kathy
Joven, JHR Assistant Director of
Nursing; as well as many family members
and friends.
The Jewish Home is proud to call someone
of Eric’s caliber one of their own.
Congratulations Eric!
Photo Collection at Rockleigh and River Vale Draws Onlookers to a World Away
Iris Rosendahl, Public Relations Coordinator, Jewish Home Foundation
When the Jewish Home at Rockleigh opened its
doors in 2001, it was a state-of-the-art facility in
every way, including its outstanding collection of
photographs. These photographs were contributed
by some gifted photographers who filled JHR’s
hallways with beautiful and interesting examples
of their work.
“During the construction stage, we had discussions
as to how we should go about creating art work for
the facility,” said now President and CEO of the
Jewish Home Family, Chuck Berkowitz. “We talked
to Julian Hyman, M.D., the late Irving Swire, and
Gordon Rapp. Each one, a very skilled photographer,
offered me the opportunity to look at their
collections. It was love at first sight! These wonderful
photographers formed an Art Committee. They
contributed their photos for the benefit of the
residents and collaborated with us to choose individual
photographs. They also worked with JHR’s
engineers to correctly hang the photos.” The committee
expanded to include Elaine Hyman, Julian’s
wife and a talented sculptor, Roz Swire, Gail Bokor,
and the late Syril Rubin.
The Art Committee met every few weeks. At every
meeting, Julian Hyman, Irving Swire, and Gordon
Rapp each brought slides of their favorite photos
taken on many local trips and during vacations to
various countries. In order for a photo to be chosen
for what became galleries on each floor of JHR, “all
three members of the committee had to approve the
choice,” said Dr. Hyman. Over a six month period,
the group came up with the collection of photographs
that still grace the walls of JHR and bring
pleasure to residents and visitors alike.
“We tried to make it as if you’ve traveled around
the world,” said Julian Hyman, with photographs
taken during visits each photographer had made all
over the United States and to foreign countries.
“We also set up a number of photos that were logically
grouped together, such as animals, scenery,
and people. It was decided to make all the prints
20” x 30.” They had to be enlarged by someone very
capable,” he added. So the committee turned to Fuji
Film which had a small outdoor kiosk in
Hackensack where they enlarge prints taken from
slides. “Unfortunately Fuji closed down the kiosk
because it was unprofitable,” Dr. Hyman explained.
The committee then hired the Tenafly Camera Shop
and Avigail Umanzor who complete the project.
Dr. Hyman became interested in photography as a
child when his folks bought him a small camera. “I
Dr. Julian Hyman
always took pictures,” he said, noting that his love
of photography continued when he went to Korea
during the war as an Army surgeon. Soon after his
arrival, an officer ordered him to go to Pusan, located
on the southernmost tip of the Korean
Peninsula. He caught a flight on a DC3 where there
was no place to sit other than the floor. However
uncomfortable that trip was, his travels around
Korea underscored his love of photography, which
he has kept up to the present day.
“My wife and I filled the walls of our house in
Teaneck with our art for 50 years,” Julian said.
“Elaine was a professional sculptor and we saved
ten or so of her works as well as my photographs
for display at our home.” In addition, the Hymans
had exhibits of their work at galleries in New York
City. “One gallery did a show of both our works—
my wife’s in the front and mine in the back.”
When the Jewish Home Assisted Living in River
Vale opened in 2007, “we went back to the original
group and asked if they would repeat the process,”
said Chuck Berkowitz. “They were very enthusiastic.
Over the years, we’ve gotten rave reviews on
the quality of the photos and the opportunity to see
pictures of places you may never travel to.”
“The photographs have really transformed JHAL
from a health care facility to a homelike place,” said
JHAL’s Executive Director, Lauren Levant. At the
same time, “many visitors have said that coming to
JHAL and seeing this collection is like visiting a
museum.”

2013 Strategic Planning
Charles P. Berkowitz, President & CEO, Jewish Home Family
The Jewish Home Family has formed a strategic planning committee to look forward
as the Jewish Home had done many times over its 98 year history in an attempt to
stay ahead of the curve in meeting the changing needs of the elderly in our catchment
area. The committee consists of both members of our Boards of Directors and the
executive leadership of each of our agencies. We are very pleased with those who
have volunteered from the Boards of Directors and the committee is well balanced
so that all of our entities are represented. The committee has met on two occasions
and recommended to the Jewish Home Family Board of Directors that a consultant
be retained to help us explore the many alternatives which lend themselves to the
changing health care scene and to the unmet needs of the elderly in our community.
At the April 25, 2013 meeting of the Jewish Home Family, this recommendation was
approved and a search is now underway to identify those professionals who could
assist in accomplishing this initiative. We have identified a number of outstanding
candidates with the help of the committee members and if you have a suggestion, we
are open to it.
The last strategic planning committee in the 1990’s was responsible for laying the
tracks for the accomplishment of developing, planning and overseeing the building
of the Jewish Home at Rockleigh in 2001 and the Jewish Home Assisted Living in
2005. That process started over 10 years before and consisted of working with the
community to ascertain their insight as to the needs in Bergen County. The longterm
care community of the Jewish Federation of NNJ played a role in this process.
Members of that committee traveled with me to see a number of other facilities which
were state-of-the-art at the time. We traveled west, south and north to see these so
that we were in a better position to move forward. They were also involved in the
sale of the Jersey City facilities.
During these two committee meetings a number of ideas were discussed as potential
projects that ranged from housing, a Continuing Care Retirement Community and/or
independent living for both low and moderate income units; a vocational/special
needs facility; additional long-term care beds; expanded outpatient rehabilitation
services; or infrastructure/office space for the Jewish Home Family, Finance Office,
Jewish Home Foundation of NNJ and the Jewish Home at Home services. Other
thoughts ranged from a research center for geriatrics, a restaurant for those living in
housing, or housing for staff.
It is anticipated that after picking a consultant and refining exactly which services we
determine would provide the greatest benefit for the community, that members of
the committee will again explore those services through some travel to see the leaders
in the field.
In addition to looking at services which will require the construction of new infrastructure,
we will explore services such as the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the
Elderly (PACE). This program is national and provides comprehensive long-term
care services for Medicaid and Medicare recipients that enable them to remain in
their own home. The common theme in most of these programs is to create a way for
the Jewish Home Family and its constituent agencies to enable the elderly to remain
in their own home.
We know that you will join the Jewish Home in these endeavors as you have always
done in the past and look forward to your support of our meeting the needs of the
elderly in our community.
Training Therapy Dog as Bat Mitzvah Project
Iris Rosendahl, Public Relations Coordinator, Jewish Home
Foundation
Sophie Winters, who lives with her
family in Demarest, NJ, decided to do
her bat mitzvah project as a volunteer
at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh. She
trained her black Labrador “Sam,”
short for Samson, as a therapy dog
and visited residents at JHR on a
regular basis, usually on Sunday
mornings. In addition, Sophie decided
to ask those who attended her bat
mitzvah on March 9th at Temple
Emanu-El in Closter to
contribute to one of
three organizations
rather than give her a
gift. The three groups
are: Jewish Home at
Rockleigh; Hackensack
University Medical
Center, in memory of
her father’s father; or
the Pat Summitt
Foundation, in honor
of the head coach of
the University of Tennessee basketball
team who has been diagnosed with
early Alzheimer’s disease, and in
memory of Sophie’s great grandmother,
Goldie who suffered from the
same affliction. “I had a specific reason
for each one. It was closely related
to me or a family member,” Sophie
said. More than $3,000 has been
donated to the JHR on her behalf.
“Training Sam took six months,“
Sophie said. She and her dog had to
pass a test given by Therapy Dog
International to be certified. The test
consisted of 15 tasks that had to be
successfully completed. “Thirteen
were easy, but two were tough and I
wasn’t sure we were going to pass the
test. Training Sam required a lot of
repetition. It didn’t happen overnight
because he didn’t follow commands
right away. But it was worth it. I’m
still enjoying it,” Sophie explained.
Her mother Nancy adds that “she has
seen several residents
regularly and they
look forward to seeing
Sophie. Sophie enjoys
seeing how happy it
makes them and she’s
sad when she has to
leave.”
Asked what satisfaction
she gets from her
visits, Sophie says “I
love animals. I love
being around my dog. It’s something I
have combined with something that
helps other people.”
Pet therapy is a regular part of the
Recreation Therapy Program at the
JHR, as well as at the Jewish Home
Assisted Living in River Vale. JHR’s
Director of Recreation, Tracey
Couliboly said, “there are therapeutic
benefits to holding pets. It can help
lower blood pressure and reduce agitation.
Great value can be found in the
connection made between residents
and pets.”
As reality shows have become a significant part of
“Pop Culture,” cooking shows appear on all the major
television networks. JHAL recently combined Hell’s
Kitchen and Master Chef and held its first Mystery Box
Cookoff.
The contestants included JHAL’s own Jean Duroseau,
Director of Food Services and JHR’s Dominic
Ackerman, Executive Chef. As a surprise to the
contestants, JHAL was able to secure a celebrity chef.
Chef Dana Cohen, third runner up of Hell’s Kitchen
Season 10, was the Master of Ceremonies. Dana, a
native of the town of River Vale was honored to be a
part of this unique experience. The judges were two
residents currently residing in JHAL, Joe Leeds and
Helen Goldberg.
Prior to the event, JHAL staff met with Dana Cohen
and created a two-course competition. Neither of the
contestants were aware of the ingredients until the
Mystery Box was revealed. The contestants had 20
minutes to create an original first course (appetizer).
There were 5 ingredients that were required to be
used: salmon, wonton wrappers, honey roasted
peanuts, avocados, and mangos. In the final preparation
stage, Dana added a sixth ingredient that had to
be utilized, which was blood oranges. After completion,
the two JHAL residents tasted both creations and
then voted on the winning dish.
For the next stage, each contestant had 30 minutes to
create an entrée. The required ingredients included
duck, challah, endive, pataki mushrooms, carrots, and
Dr. Brown’s Cherry soda. Of course, with both dishes,
the contestants had a pantry filled with staple items.
During both parts of the competion, Dana Cohen was
interviewing the chefs trying to find out what they
were creating and what unique techniques they were
using. She also interviewed the resident judges and the
other residents in the audience. The dining room was
filled with delicious aromas that each chef brought to
their creation.
In the end, JHAL resident judges awarded Jean
Duroseau the “Master Chef” winner.
A special thank you to JHR’s Lisa Segelbacher and
Jonathan Fox for their assistance in providing the
necessary ingredients to ensure a true Mystery Box
competition. Additionally our hats off to Dominic for
being a great contestant filled with lots of personality.
