CCR2 <strong>and</strong> CXCR2 (Heesen et al, 1996b). Other<br />
studies con®rmed that CXCR4 is expressed by<br />
microglia <strong>in</strong> human <strong>and</strong> mouse bra<strong>in</strong> (He et al,<br />
1996). The s<strong>in</strong>gle unequivocal demonstration that<br />
<strong>chemok<strong>in</strong>e</strong> <strong>receptors</strong> are important for developmental<br />
neural pattern<strong>in</strong>g comes from the ®nd<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that CXCR4 knockout mice exhibit abnormal<br />

formation of the <strong>CNS</strong> (Littman, 1998). Two alternatively<br />
spliced forms of mouse CXCR4 have been<br />
identi®ed both of which are expressed by cultured<br />
astrocytes <strong>and</strong> microglia (Heesen et al, 1997).<br />
Several orphan <strong>chemok<strong>in</strong>e</strong> receptor-like prote<strong>in</strong>s<br />
were detected <strong>in</strong> the <strong>CNS</strong>. They have structure<br />
similar to <strong>chemok<strong>in</strong>e</strong> <strong>receptors</strong> but their lig<strong>and</strong>s<br />
