Commencement Ceremony
The Kean University Commencement ceremony will take place on
Thursday, May 16, 2013, at the Prudential Center, 165 Mulberry
Street, Newark, N.J. Please arrive no later than 7 a.m. with your
cap, gown and reader card and proceed to the Lafayette Tower
entrance to prepare for your processional lineup. The procession
will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m.
Your 2013 commencement exercises will include graduates from
January and candidates who have filed for graduation in May and
August. Commencement is a celebration of your achievements. It is a
formal event planned with you, your family and the Kean faculty in
mind. The instructions in this newsletter should provide all necessary
information and answer many of your questions. Please pay particular
attention to these instructions, as many past practices will no longer
apply. The success of commencement will depend upon your individual
cooperation.
Honorary Degree Recipients and Commencement Speaker
The commencement speaker and the names of the honorary degree
recipients have not yet been announced. Please check the graduation
Web site at www.kean.edu/commencement, where the names will be
posted at a later date.
Graduate Entrance
All students must enter the Lafayette Tower located at the
Southeast corner of the building at Lafayette St. and Mulberry St.
Please refer to the map on page 7.
Graduate Arrival Time
Please arrive at the Prudential Center no later than 7 a.m. with
your cap, gown and reader card for robing and proceed to the
Lafayette Tower entrance for the processional lineup. You will robe
and gather with your fellow graduates in your assigned areas. There,
you will be directed by the Kean University commencement marshals,
who will be wearing blue robes. They will direct the lineup, which
will begin at 7 a.m. The procession will follow promptly at 8:30 a.m.
No guests will be allowed in the lineup area.
Academic Attire
Please arrive with your caps and gowns; they will not be available on
site. GOWNS SHOULD BE PRESSED! The cap is worn level on the
head, slightly forward, never tilted, with the tassel on the front-right.
Gowns should be approximately 8 inches from the floor (a temporary
hem can be sewn if needed). Please read the information about ordering
caps and gowns on page 4. As part of the procession will include
walking down stairs, we recommend that you wear flat, comfortable
shoes.
Robing Area
There will be designated stations in the Lafayette Tower for those students
needing assistance with their robes.
Line-up Procedure
Please be dressed and ready to form the processional line promptly at
7 a.m. You will line up according to college and major as instructed
by the marshals. Please review the list on page 8 to determine
which college your program is in.
Procession
You will follow bagpipers, platform guests and faculty down a short
corridor and enter the arena. At that point, the marshals will direct
you where to sit. Please follow their instructions.
Awarding of Degrees
You will be asked to stand up with your fellow students as your program
of study is announced. Your name will then be called individually.
You will walk across the stage, where your dean will congratulate
you and shake your hand. If you have any restrictions regarding this
process, please alert the Commencement Committee at
mwuethri@kean.edu or 908-737-7161. Your diploma cover will then
be presented to you.
Photo Opportunities
We understand that this is an important day to be remembered in
photographs. Professional photographers from Island Photography
will be on hand to capture the moment when graduates march in to
the main ceremony and receive their diploma covers.
These photos are taken without obligation, and you will be contacted by
Island Photography within 48 hours of the ceremony to view and order
your photos. At that time, you may place orders or obtain answers to
questions by calling 1-800-869-0908.
This is also an excellent opportunity for friends and family to take pictures,
but guests will not be permitted to approach the student-seating
area or stage to take photos during the ceremony. The use of cameras and
video cameras are allowed for personal use only.
Recessional
There will not be a recessional at the conclusion of the main ceremony.
Please exit slowly in an orderly fashion as directed by the marshals.
