November 2009
Principal’s Newsletter
Dear Parents
This is the final newsletter for 2009! The year has raced by far too quickly.
We had a large number of parents present at Senior Prize giving. Thank you for
joining us to celebrate the many successes of our young women. What an amazing
number of scholarships our girls won! It was a pleasure and an honour to
welcome Judge Ida Malosi to Senior prize giving. Her family donated the Ida Malosi Cup
for the top Pacific Nation Academic Student.
Senior External examinations began on 6 November. Senior students wishing to study at
school must sign in at the Student Centre. B6 and the Library are available for their use.
Junior Examinations were held this week. We have also completed the end of year Asttle
literacy and Numeracy testing of Year 9 and 10. From Monday 30 November teachers will
focus on Year 10 and 11 class work for our Year 9 and 10 students. It is important that your
daughter continues to attend school each day. We have a series of lunch time competitions
operating which will earn house points for each House. The form class earning the most
house points will earn an afternoon off school. I wish to thank parents for their cooperation
which enabled us to hold two very productive professional development afternoons for
teachers on the New Zealand Curriculum. The new Curriculum begins in 2010.
I am looking for volunteer parents who have an email address. In 2010 I would like to occasionally
email you for your thoughts on education and related activities at our school.
Probably you would be asked to respond once a term. If you are interested, please email
ppa@kelstongirls.school.nz with your name, your daughter’s name and her year level.
I wish to thank all of you for your support for Kelston Girls’ College this year. I thank all
Kelston Girls’ Staff, teachers and support staff for their work on behalf of our young
women. I thank the Kelston Girls College Board of Trustees for their generous donation of
time and energy to support our school and to support me.
I wish you all a happy time with family and friends in this festive season and a safe
summer holiday. See you next year.
Linda Fox
PRINCIPAL
Congratulations
Congratulations to Nazhat Saleem—winner of a First Foundation Scholarship with New Zealand
Post. Nazhat will receive mentoring and tertiary fees in future years with NZ Post.
Well done Nazhat.
Congratulations to the Senior Tennis Team. The following students won the Senior West Interschool
Competition, 2009: Anwitee Udayan, Neha Karan, Malini Narain, Cassandra Mensah,
Lyan Mensah, Malia Sinisa, Ruksaar Ali.

From the Board of Trustees
Dear Parents
Another year and what a year! Thank you for attending the Senior Academic Prize giving to celebrate the successes
of our young women. In sport , culture and academia, our girls have excelled themselves this year.
Music Scholarships
The Board Music Scholarships are available again for next year. Two are available for year 8 students who
will attend our school next year and two are available for Year 10 students who is moving into Year 11 next
year. Applicants are asked to write to the Principal outlining their music experience. A condition of the Scholarship
is that the student joins the Kelston Girls’ College Chamber Group.
Fundraising
There has been frequent mention in the media this year of the financial difficulties schools face in this time of
recession. Many parents at our school have struggled to pay the school donation and the swine flu epidemic
meant we had fewer international students studying at Kelston Girls’ College. Interest rates have also been
down. This has meant that although we have managed to stay within budget, we are struggling to find enough
money to cover sport and ICT expenses in 2010. We wish to start a Fund raising Committee of parents and
Board members. It you are interested in joining the committee please ring me, James Prescott or the Principal
Mrs Fox on 827 9622 or email ppa@kelstongirls.school.nz with your name and contact details. We will call
our first meeting early in the New Year.
Board Elections
If you are thinking about volunteering to be on the Board next year, please ring me on 09 827 9622
Or email on ppa@kelstongirls.school.nz. We are looking for new Board members. Elections are on 7th May
2010.
I wish to thank my Board for their commitment and support this year. I thank Principal Fox for her continued
focus on learning success for every young woman. I thank the teachers and support staff for their energy and
support for Kelston Girls.
I wish you all a happy festive season and a safe summer vacation.
James Prescott
BOT Chairman
Kelston Girls’ College BOT Design a Flag Competition
Students are asked to design a flag for Kelston Girls’ College that reflects what
our school represents. The winning design will be flown at the front of the
school.
Closing date: 19 February 2010
TSUNAMI TYPHOON APPEAL – $2,380.50 RAISED!
Talofa lava! When Samoa and Tonga was hit by the Tsunami, and the
Philippines and Indonesia suffered a typhoon, there was an overwhelming
response from the staff and students of Kelston Girls’ College to help. The
Student Council were unanimous in their support for the appeal. There
have been a number of fundraising events organised and run by our
school. We have sold cakes, island food, bracelets and drinks at lunchtime;
we have held a lunchtime concert featuring our own students and
outside guests like Matt Luatua and SaraJane Elika; the Indians and Muslims
helped out by donating all the proceeds for their Diwali concert to the
Tsunami Appeal; Whaea Parehuia Nepe, the Auhia Kia Mohio Kia Rangatira class and the Marae
Committee generously gave proceeds of the mufti day; we held our own mufti day and a junior social
and a walkathon. Our goal was to reach $2,000.00. Under the leadership of our junior student volunteers,
we managed to raise a Grand Total of $2,380.50!! Robin Greig, Red Cross President of
the Howick and Bucklands Beach branches will be joining us at our
assembly on Friday 20 November 2009 to receive our donation. We
are pleased to report that Red Cross will be using 100% of our donation
for the appeal fund.
A sincere thanks to all the staff, students and our wider community for
donating generously to help rebuild the countries affected by natural
disasters this year. We are confident that your contributions will be
greatly appreciated. Fa’afetai, fa’afetai lava
FROM THE HAUORA CENTRE ON TOOTH DECAY
What is tooth decay?
Also known as dental caries or cavities it is due to poor teeth cleaning habits. The
decay begins on the outer surface of the tooth and moves in to the deeper layers of
the tooth. The kinds of foods we eat can affect acid levels in our mouths. This acid
which is in the plaque attacks tooth enamel causing decay.
The causes of tooth decay:
· Poor brushing and not brushing teeth often enough. Not rinsing mouth after meals. Increased
intake of starch and sugary diet. (e.g. sweet foods and drinks like lollies, cakes and biscuits, fruit
juice and fizzy drinks. The more often you eat these the more likely you will get holes in your
teeth.
· Smoking also contributes to tooth decay.
· It is safer to limit food and drinks with added sugar to meal times rather than having many sweet
treats throughout the day.
· Water is best for you. Cut down on the fizzy drinks.
You don’t have to try anything fancy to maintain good oral hygiene.
Brush the teeth two times per day.
Floss your teeth at least once every alternative day.
Regular dental check ups by the dentist.
The dental caravan visits the school 2 times per year to check your teeth at Kelston Girls.
Dental care is free across the road for under 18 year olds and if you come to see the nurse if you
have any concerns with your teeth we can book an appointment for you.
Health and Safety
The Youth 2000 and Youth 2007 surveys are the most comprehensive surveys done on the health of
New Zealand Adolescents.
This summary of the findings of the most recent survey make interesting reading for teachers and
parents alike. (see over page)
FIRST DENTAL Phone 8372260
If your child is aged from13years to 18years old they should attend annual appointments at the dentist for a free check up, x
rays and a clean any other treatment needed is free, whether they have left school, at university, doing a course, or not.
First Dental is encouraging all parents to do something about it these school holidays. That is why we are going to reward
every child aged between 13yrs to 18years old a FREE movie pass once they have visited us for their check up and treatment.
In addition, while the kids are at the movies Mum and Dad can take advantage of our special offer, for only $99.00, you too
