Descendants of <strong>Nicholas</strong> <strong>Reuther</strong><br />

1-<strong>Nicholas</strong> <strong>Reuther</strong>, son of Unknown <strong>Reuther</strong>, was born about 1819 in Trogen, Oberfranken<br />

District, Bavaria, Germany 1 and died about Sep 1876 in Probably Clinton County, Pennsylvania 2<br />

about age 57.<br />

General Notes: According to Hilda Zimmerman Jeffries, Adam and <strong>Nicholas</strong> <strong>Reuther</strong> were<br />

brothers. Hilda was a daughter of Jacob and Matilda Laura Amm Zimmerman. Matilda was the<br />

daughter of Frederick and Caroline <strong>Reuther</strong> Amm, and granddaughter of Adam <strong>Reuther</strong>. [Mary<br />

Lamey Hoffer, 2004]<br />

Nicol. <strong>Reuther</strong> and his son Herm. immigrated in 1870. They arrived in New York City on 30<br />

July 1870 on the ship Union from Bremen, Germany. <strong>Nicholas</strong> was 51 years old, and from the<br />

city of Hof (in Bavaria). [1]<br />

On 9 February 1874, <strong>Nicholas</strong> declared his intention to be<strong>com</strong>e a US citizen. The clerk<br />

recorded his name as <strong>Nicholas</strong> Reuter, and <strong>Nicholas</strong> signed the document Nicolis <strong>Reuther</strong>. He<br />

was 54 years old, born in Trogen, Bavaria, and immigrated at New York 2 Aug 1870. <strong>Nicholas</strong><br />

was sworn in as a US citizen on 14 February 1876. He signed the citizenship document Nikol<br />

<strong>Reuther</strong>.<br />

On 30 January 1875, <strong>Nicholas</strong> purchased 16+ acres from John and Hulda Rarig in Greene<br />

township, Clinton County, PA, for $244.<br />

<strong>Nicholas</strong> died about September 1876, probably in Clinton County, Pennsylvania, where his<br />

estate was probated. A notice dated 4 October 1876 in the newspaper refers to Letters of<br />

Administration being granted on the estate of <strong>Nicholas</strong> <strong>Reuther</strong>, deceased. [2]<br />

refers to the land as that which <strong>Nicholas</strong> purchased in 1875, and that passed to his son Herman<br />

were born, or in the city of Hof, Bavaria, where he and his father immigrated from.<br />

Herm. <strong>Reuther</strong> immigrated with his father Nicol. <strong>Reuther</strong> in 1870. They arrived in New<br />

York City on 30 July 1870 on the ship Union from Bremen, Germany. Herman was 9 years<br />

old, and from the city of Hof (in Bavaria). [note 1; 1910 Census]<br />

Herman was about 16 years old when his father died about September 1876, just six years<br />

after they arrived in the United States.<br />

On the 1880 Census, Herman J <strong>Reuther</strong> is living in Greene Township, Clinton County,<br />

Pennsylvania, with Frederick Amm (Aunn) and his family. He is 19 years old, born in<br />

Bayern/Bavaria, and is a farm laborer. He is a cousin of Frederick's wife Caroline.<br />

On the 1900 Census, Herman J <strong>Reuther</strong> is living in Greene Township. He is 39 years old, a<br />

day laborer, and was born in Germany. Herman immigrated in 1870, has been living in the<br />

US 30 years, and is a naturalized citizen. Living with him are his wife Sophia G, 34, born in<br />

Pennsylvania, and their children Jesse D, 11, and Della M, 9. Herman and Sophia have been<br />

married 17 years. She has had 4 children, 2 are living.<br />

In the 1910 Census, Herman J <strong>Reuther</strong> is living in Greene Township. He is 49 years old, a<br />

farmer, and was born in Germany. He lists his year of immigration as 1870, and he is a<br />

naturalized citizen. Living with Herman are his wife Sophia, 44, and their children Jesse, 21,<br />

and Della M, 18. Jesse is a laborer doing odd farm jobs. Herman and Sophia have been<br />

married 27 years. She has given birth to four children, and two are living.<br />

In the 1920 Census (Feb 1-2), Herman J <strong>Reuther</strong> is living in Greene Township. He is 59<br />

years old, retired farmer, and was born in Bavaria. He immigrated in 1870 and is not a<br />

citizen. Living with him his wife Sophie G, 50?, and son Jesse D, 33.<br />

Herman J <strong>Reuther</strong> died February 22, 1920. His wife Sophia was the administrator for his<br />

estate. [2]<br />

Herman W <strong>Reuther</strong> died at his home in one and a half miles east of Carrol of pneumonia.<br />

He was engaged in lumbering and operated a cider mill. Herman was born in Bavaria in<br />

1860. He was survived by his wife, daughter Mrs E W Lamey of Loganton, and son Jesse,<br />

who lives at home. [4]<br />

Pennsylvania 12 at age 80, and was buried in Brungard's Cemetery, Greene Twp, Clinton<br />

County, Pennsylvania. 11 They had four children: Irena, Jacob, Jesse David, and Della<br />

Gertrude.<br />

General Notes: Sophia Zimmerman was born at Tea Springs Lodge in Sugar Valley and<br />

lived there all her life. Her parents were among the first settlers of Tea Springs Lodge. [2]<br />

Sophia's brother Jacob married Matilda Amm, Sophia's husband's 1st cousin once removed.<br />

In the 1930 Census, Sophia G <strong>Reuther</strong> is living in Greene township, Clinton Co,<br />

Pennsylvania, with her son Jesse. She is 64 years old and a widow.<br />

Sophia died in 3 November 1945 at the Jersey Shore Hospital. She was admitted a few days<br />

previously in a serious condition. Sophia was 80. [1, 2]<br />

the most consistent with the censuses.<br />

In the 1910 Census, Jesse is living with his parents and sister in Green Township,<br />

Clinton County, Pennsylvania. He is 21 years old and a laborer doing odd farm jobs. He<br />

was out of work 8 weeks in 1909.<br />

In 1917 Jesse David <strong>Reuther</strong> is living in Clinton County (Loganton RFD). He is<br />

farming for his [father] Herman J <strong>Reuther</strong> in Carroll. Jesse is single, supporting his<br />

parents, born 21 March 1889 in Greene township, and has poor eyes. [5]<br />

In the 1920 Census, Jesse D <strong>Reuther</strong> is 33 years old and living with his parents in<br />

Greene township, Clinton County.<br />

In the 1930 Census, Jesse D <strong>Reuther</strong> is living in Greene township. He is 41 years old<br />

and a farmer. Living with his is his mother Sophia.<br />

In 1942 Jesse David <strong>Reuther</strong> is living in Greene township in Clinton County. He is<br />

working for the Department of Highways in Loganton. Jesse's sister Mrs Ellis Lamey<br />

is listed as his closest contact. Jessee was born 21 March 1889 in Clinton County. [3]<br />

Jesse D <strong>Reuther</strong>, of Loganton RD, died January 24, 1950, at Jersey Shore Hospital,<br />

where he was admitted on January 21. Jesse had been employed by the State Highway<br />

Glenn was a former board member of the former Commonwealth Bank &<br />

Trust; a member of the LaBelle Vallee Masonic Lodge #232, Jaffa Shrine in<br />

S. Williamsport and the BPOE#1057.<br />

He was also on the Jersey Shore School Board, the board of PA Tourist and<br />

was the Porter Township Supervisor. [1]<br />

He enjoyed Florida, his motor home and boating. [1]<br />

Glenn H. Hiller, of Jersey Shore, passed away 10 December 2007, possibly of<br />

Alzheimers. (The family requested contributions in his memory.) [1]<br />

In addition to his three children, all of Jersey Shore, Glenn was survived by<br />

grandchildren Steven, Heather, J.T., Tyler & Melissa; great-grandchildren<br />

Lane, Brennan, Madison, Kollen & Bella. [1]<br />

Lamey of Loganton, attended the nurses training school of Williamsport [PA]<br />

Hospital. [1]<br />

In May 1958 Mrs Violet Lamey Helmrick [Helmrich] of Williamsport attended the<br />

20th reunion of the nurses' class of 1938. [2]<br />

Mrs. Violet L. Helmrich, 90, of 1316 Watson St., Williamsport, died Thursday,<br />

July 17, 2008, at The Gatehouse Hospice of Divine Providence Hospital,<br />

Williamsport. She was born August 27, 1917 at Loganton, Clinton County, she<br />

was the daughter of the late Ellis and Della <strong>Reuther</strong> Lamey.<br />

Mrs. Helmrich was the widow of the late Charles V. Helmrich, Sr., who preceded<br />

her in death on January 2, 1983. They were married on August 30, 1940.<br />

Violet was a graduate of the Sugar Valley High School, Class of 1934 and a<br />

graduate of the Class of 1938 of the former Williamsport Hospital School of<br />

Nursing. She had been employed by The Williamsport Hospital as a registered<br />

nurse, and had also worked as a private duty nurse for many years.<br />

Surviving are her two daughters, Mrs. Susanne and her husband, Dr. Raymond A.<br />

Lukas of Montoursville and Mrs. Diana Lynn and her husband, Charles DeFanti<br />

of Macungie, her two sons, Charles Victor, Jr., and his wife, Joan Helmrich of<br />

Herndon, VA, and Robert S., and his wife, Joan Helmrich of South Williamsport,<br />

eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.<br />

In addition to her late parents and her late husband, Violet was also preceded in<br />

death by her late sister, Josephine Slaterbeck and her late three brothers, Howard<br />

Lamey, George Lamey, and Glenn Lamey. [3]<br />

Glenn helped operate the Old Lamey's Service Station in Loganton, and was<br />

employed by Piper Aircraft in Lock Haven for over 35 years. He was a member of<br />

Rote United Methodist Church, Ridge Runners Square Dance club and the<br />

National Square Dance Association. He enjoyed camping and traveling. [2]<br />

When Glenn died in March 2008, he was survived by his wife Irene, three sons,<br />

nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and sister Violet. [2]<br />

George served in the Army veteran during the Korean War.<br />

He worked at Piper for 38 years and, since 1986, had worked for R.W. Bird doing<br />

farm pickups and deliveries to New Jersey. He was a member of Albright United<br />

Methodist Church in Loganton, the Sugar Valley Volunteer Fire Company and the<br />

Sugar Valley Social Club.<br />

George was survived by his wife, three daughters, Cindy Smith of Spring Mills,<br />

and Sheryl Kerstetter and Melanie Tressler, both of Loganton; a son, Daniel W. of<br />

Loganton; two sisters, Josephine Slaterbeck of Lock Haven and Violet Helmrich<br />

of Williamsport; a brother, Glenn Lamey of Mill Hall; 10 grandchildren; and five<br />

great-grandchildren. A brother preceded him in death. [2]<br />

General Notes: Jean's sister Mary Lamey Hoffer provided much information on<br />

the <strong>Reuther</strong> family in Clinton County, Pennsylvania, in 2004.<br />

M. Jean Lamey, 73, of 12 Wood St., Loganton, passed away on Thursday, July 10,<br />

2008, at Williamsport Hospital.<br />

Jean was born November 28, 1934 in Loganton, a daughter of the late Harry E.<br />

and Edna E. (Kleckner) Lamey.<br />

She was married to George F. Lamey on December 15, 1951. He preceded her in<br />

death on March 22, 2000.<br />

Jean was formerly employed by Susque-View Home during the 1970s. She was a<br />

school bus driver for over 30 years for Kephart's, Schrack's and Susquehanna<br />

Transit. She was also a cook for the Pepper Run Hunting Club for many years.<br />

Jean also loved sitting on her front porch and "gossiping" with friends. She was<br />

also a fine seamstress and avid quilter.<br />

Jean also served on the election board and zoning-hearing board for many years<br />

and belonged to the Sugar Valley Vol. Fire Co. #13, ladies auxiliary.<br />

Jean is survived by three daughters, Cindy (Danny) Smith of Spring Mills; Sheryl<br />

(Bill) Kerstetter; and Melanie (Mike) Kerchner, both of Loganton, a son, Dan<br />

(Lynn) Lamey of Loganton, a sister, Mary (Dean) Hoffer Munro of Jersey Shore<br />

and a brother, Harold (Sharon) Lamey of Ranchtown.<br />

Jean was also blessed by 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and six step<br />

great-grandchildren. [1]<br />
