stands were torn down so crews could begin working on the<br />

underground base of the scoreboard. That work began in April<br />

with an expected completion date of early August <strong>for</strong> all of<br />

Phase II.<br />

To help celebrate all of the hard work that has gone into<br />

making both phases of the Dix Stadium renovations a reality,<br />

<strong>Kent</strong> <strong>State</strong> will unveil the completed project at the football<br />

team’s home opener against Delaware <strong>State</strong> on Sept. 13. The<br />

game will serve as Heroes Day, Band Day and Parents’ Day,<br />

and will showcase a post-game fireworks d<strong>is</strong>play.<br />

The stadium improvement <strong>is</strong> one of many recent projects<br />

that have significantly upgraded <strong>Kent</strong> <strong>State</strong>’s athletic facilities,<br />

including the construction of Murphy-Mell<strong>is</strong> Field <strong>for</strong> field<br />

hockey and the renovation of baseball’s Schoonover Stadium<br />

with a new turf field, new dugouts and the addition of a<br />

clubhouse.<br />

Since 2000, the department has maintained “excellence<br />

in action” through such projects as the $2.2 million Ferrara<br />

and Page Golf Training and Learning Center; upgraded<br />

locker facilities <strong>for</strong> wrestling, men’s and women’s basketball,<br />

volleyball and football; and new turf <strong>for</strong> both Dix Stadium and<br />

the Field House. In addition, the track inside the Field House<br />

will be replaced in May.<br />

annual Patriot Bowl<br />

As the <strong>Kent</strong> <strong>State</strong> football team<br />

gets ready to begin its 2008 season,<br />

excitement <strong>is</strong> building <strong>for</strong> the Golden<br />

Flashes’ season opener against Boston<br />

College on Aug. 30, and not just because they will be going<br />

up against a team that fin<strong>is</strong>hed the 2007 season 11-3 and No.<br />

10 in the final AP poll.<br />

The Flashes and Eagles will battle at Cleveland Browns<br />

Stadium in the FirstMerit Patriot Bowl (www.patriotbowl.<br />

com), organized in conjunction with the Greater Cleveland<br />

Sports Comm<strong>is</strong>sion (GCSC).<br />

“We’re happy to work with the Sports Comm<strong>is</strong>sion<br />

on an event that will bring a marquee Div<strong>is</strong>ion I football<br />

opponent to Cleveland,” <strong>Kent</strong> <strong>State</strong> Athletic Director Laing<br />

Kennedy says. “We’re proud that our game will be the<br />

continuation of an annual event.”<br />

The match-up will mark the second year of the Patriot<br />

Bowl at Cleveland Browns Stadium. A portion of proceeds<br />

will be donated to benefit military-related charities.<br />
