Abraham and Mary Lincoln:
A House Divided
In 1882 Mary Todd Lincoln
was an old woman living on a
hill on the outskirts of Springfield,
Illinois. She kept the curtains
drawn, never went outside,
never received visitors. Neighborhood
children pointed up at
her window and hurried past
frightened by “the crazy lady”
in the upstairs room.
Forty years before in the parlor
of the same house, Mary had
married a tall, awkward lawyer;
she still wore his ring, inscribed
with the words, “Love is eternal.” At the time, she was an aristocratic
southerner and the daughter of a Kentucky slave owner, he a
backwoods politician. She had once said of her future husband: “He
is to be president of the United States some day; if I had not thought
so I never would have married him, for you can see he is not pretty.”
More has been written about Abraham Lincoln than any other
American, and yet the wife who helped him rise to power and complicated
his life once he got there remains little known. “Abraham
and Mary Lincoln: A House Divided,” a six-part series on American
Experience, is the first film to focus on their marriage. It follows
the couple from their strikingly different childhoods to their
years in the White House. It paints a vivid picture of a troubled marriage,
of a couple who loved each other passionately, who quarreled
intensely, and who frequently mourned. And it describes the impact
of Lincoln’s brutal assassination on the sanity of his wife.
“Abraham and Mary Lincoln: A House Divided” on American
Experience can be seen Mondays at 8:00 p.m. beginning June 20th.
It repeats Sundays at 9:30 p.m. beginning June 26th.
BAD BLOOD:
A Cautionary Tale
What if your life-saving medicine contained
deadly viruses—and the drug manufacturers, the
government, and your own doctors knew but failed
to warn you? Bad Blood: A Cautionary Tale
chronicles how a “miracle” treatment for hemophilia
became an agent of death for 10,000 Americans.
Hemophilia is a rare genetic blood clotting disorder,
most often passed from mother to son, resulting
in severe crippling and often death. But in the
1960s, Factor concentrates, a revolutionary new
treatment derived from human blood, was processed, bottled, and
offered for sale by drug companies, to be injected by the patients
themselves at home. The medicine transformed hemophilia from a
fatal disease to a chronic condition and the patients were now able
to lead nearly normal lives. This “miracle” product was considered
so beneficial that it was approved by the FDA despite known risks
of viral contamination, including the near-certainty of infection with
hepatitis.
Because of its manufacturing process, each dose of Factor concentrate
was made by pooling 60,000 individual blood donations,
opening these vulnerable patients to an enormous contamination
risk. At the time, pharmaceutical companies, government regulators,
and even doctors considered hepatitis an “acceptable risk” for
these patients. The patients themselves were rarely warned.
In the early 1980s, a deadly, unknown virus began to affect homosexual
men—and quickly spread to the hemophilia community,
raising concern that the virus was in the nation’s blood supply. Yet
even as HIV was identified, hemophiliacs dependent on multiple
doses of Factor concentrate were advised by their doctors to keep
using them. By the time the medication was pulled from the market in
1985, 10,000 hemophiliacs had been infected with HIV, and 15,000
with hepatitis C, causing the worst medical disaster in U.S. history.
Bad Blood: A Cautionary Tale will be broadcast Tuesday,
June 14th at 7:00 p.m. and Monday, June 20th at 9:00 p.m.
MYSTIC VOICES:
The Pequot War was a pivotal event in early American history
that set the stage for the ultimate domination of all Native Americans
by Europeans. Mystic Voices: The Story of the Pequot War,
a two-part series, presents a balanced view of events, underlying
causes, and legacy of the first declared war in American history.
It was a moonlit pre-dawn in May 1637. English Puritans from
Massachusetts Bay Colony and Connecticut Colony, with Mohegan
and Narragansett allies, surround a fortified Pequot village at a place
called Missituck (Mystic). In the village, the Pequots sleep. Suddenly,
a dog barks. The awakened Pequots shout Owanux! Owanux!
(Englishmen! Englishmen!) and mount a valiant defense. But within
an hour, 400-700 men, women, and children are put to the sword
or burned to death as the English torch the village. Unfamiliar with
war targeted at civilians, Native Tribes experience for the first time
the total devastating effects of warfare practiced by Europeans.
Over the next few months, the Puritan justification for the action
4
The Story of the Pequot War
is simply stated by Captain
Underhill: “It may be demanded,
Why should you
be so furious? Should not Christians have more mercy and compassion?
Sometimes the Scripture declareth women and children must
perish with their parents. Sometimes the case alters, but we will not
dispute it now. We had sufficient light from the word of God for
our proceedings.”
Although the Pequot War was a small-scale conflict, the celebration
of victory over Indians as the triumph of light over darkness,
civilization over savagery (for many generations our central historical
myth) finds its earliest full expression in the contemporary
chronicles of this little war.
Mystic Voices: The Story of the Pequot War will be broadcast
(Pt. 1) Wednesday, June 22nd at 9:00 p.m. and (Pt. 2) Wednesday,
June 29th at 9:00 p.m.

like vanilla, avocado, and chorizo to the
mysterious grains used by the Aztecs.
More than four thousand Americans each
day are diagnosed with diabetes. The
SWEET LIFE WITH CHRIS XAVER is
not a diabetic food program, but instead focuses
on figuring out how to make those
foods we know and love healthier by reducing
sugar, substituting healthier fats, and
choosing better carbohydrates. Unless the
cook “kisses and tells,” family and friends
will feel as though they are indulging.
FLY TYING: THE ANGLER’S ART
offers expert instruction on the art and craft
of tying flies for fishing. With decades of
fly-tying experience and fly-fishing success
stories to share, professional fly-tiers LeRoy
Hyatt and Carolyn Sells demonstrate tying
three to four fly patterns per episode.
In WOODCARVING WITH RICK
BÜTZ, the Adirondack woodcarver shares
tales of the Adirondack Mountains as he
demonstrates how to carve a wide variety of
subjects, including a horse, an American
eagle, a folk art-style cat, a family coat-ofarms,
Chef Pati Jinich
The Metropolitan Opera’s production of “La
Fanciulla del West,” commemorating the 100th
anniversary of the opera’s world premiere at the
Met, airs on Great Performances at the Met.
The debut of La Fanciulla del West on December
10th, 1910 was the first-ever world premiere
presented by the Met. It earned nineteen curtain
calls for Puccini, stars Emmy Destinn and Enrico
Caruso, and conductor Arturo Toscanini.
Set in a mining camp during the California
Gold Rush, saloon owner Minnie (Deborah
Voigt) has her sights set on the mysterious Dick
Johnson (Marcello Giordani), the disguised bandit
Ramerrez, and nothing—not horses, hangmen, nor a high-stakes poker
game—can keep her from finding true love. Lucio Gallo stars as the villainous
sheriff Jack Rance. San Francisco Opera Music Director Nicola Luisotti
conducts the work, which the composer told The New York Times in 1910 he
considered “the best of [his] operas.”
“La Fanciulla del West” on Great Performances at the Met will be broadcast
Wednesday, June 1st at 8:00 p.m.
authentic giants.
Looking back at creative milestones since his 1971
how Levine’s unparalleled musicianship and singular
teaching and performance styles make his relationship
with the company unique in today’s music world. It’s
Met—created and sustained one of the greatest orchestras
the world has ever known.
KENW-TV is Now on Both DirecTV and Dish Network Satellite
Both Dish Network and DirecTV Satellite services are now carrying KENW-TV in the
Albuquerque-Santa Fe Designated Market Area (DMA). This DMA includes all counties
in New Mexico except Roosevelt, Curry, Quay, Union, and Dona Ana. DirecTV is carrying
the KENW-TV High Definitions Channel (HD 3-1) on its HD channel 3 and the KENW-
TV Standard Definition (SD 3-2) on channel 3. Dish Network is carrying the KENW-TV
SD signal on its channel 3.
The Nielsen Company decides which counties go into the various DMAs. At the present
time, there are 210 DMAs in the United States. In population size, the Albuquerque-Santa
Fe DMA is the 45th largest in the U.S. because it takes in most of the State of New Mexico.
Nielsen determines the counties in a DMA by which television stations the viewers in that
county are watching.
By Nielsen rules, DirecTV and Dish Network subscribers in Union, Quay, Curry, and
Roosevelt counties will receive the Amarillo PBS station. In all other counties of New
Mexico, except for Dona Ana, subscribers will receive PBS from KENW-TV (Portales)
and KNME-TV (Albuquerque). Dona Ana is in the El Paso DMA, and those subscribers
will receive PBS from KRWG-TV (Las Cruces) and KCOS-TV (El Paso).

KENW/KMTH-FM DRIVE
Good News and Not So Good News
The good news is that KENW-FM raised more than $25,000 during our recent
Spring Quiet Drive and we are especially grateful to our many listeners who pledged
their support. A very special “thank you” also goes out to the following Challenge Grant
Donors who very generously offered dollar-for-dollar matching grants to all pledges
that came in from their communities:
*Meg and Randy Milligan of Carlsbad, NM – $1100 grant
*Dr. Dan Jones & Dr. Suzanne Schmidt of Cloudcroft, NM – $500 grant
We also want to thank our volunteers who donated their valuable time and talents
both on-air and behind-the-scenes. And another thanks goes out to Daylight Donuts
of Portales, who provided delicious snacks for our volunteers throughout the drive.
The “not-so-good” news is that our main FM transmitting antenna failed in late
December and it cost over $40,000 to have it repaired. Unfortunately, this unexpected
expense requires that we have another short FM pledge drive this month to raise money
to help pay for this repair. We hope you will bear with us as we ask for support from
those who have not yet donated. We will keep the drive very short. Thanks so much!
A donation was made in honor of
Darwin M. Sprouls by Jim Sprouls.
