“When I left
KidsPeace, I didn’t
feel like I was
leaving a program.
I felt like I was
leaving a family.”
– Katrina Hughes
Woman credits KidsPeace with helping her address mental
illness, turn life around
By: Bevin Theodore
Before Katrina Hughes came to KidsPeace, instability and loneliness were all
she knew.
Abandoned by her mother when she was 6, she lived with her grandmother,
who she described as mentally abusive. When a brother to whom she was very
close died in 1996, she could no longer cope with her shaky upbringing and
repeatedly ran away from her grandmother’s home until she was finally taken
away.
From the time she was 12, she bounced around from one program to another,
spending time in 18 hospitals and four residential programs before landing
at KidsPeace when she was 15. Her bipolar disorder, coupled with severe
depression and PTSD about her brother’s death, had led to her being kicked
out of other programs because she would get angry and lash out in an attempt
to get ousted. She struggled with drug abuse and self-injury, but once she
realized the staff at KidsPeace wasn’t going to let her continue to harm herself,
her life started to shift. Hughes graduated from the program in 2006 when she
was 16. She thought she was “cured,” but soon realized she hadn’t addressed
everything she needed to at that time, and she lacked the skills to make it on
her own.
“When I left KidsPeace, I didn’t feel like I was leaving a program. I felt like I was
leaving a family,” she said.
Now Hughes, 22, lives in Toms River, N.J., and wants to give back. Her ultimate
plan is to return to school to become a social worker, but until she can iron out
the finances needed to achieve that dream, she’s dedicating time volunteering
as a counselor to teens and helping multiple times a week with a therapy group
from which she graduated.
“I love helping people. Even when I had my problems, I tried to chase away my
problems by helping someone else,” she said. “I know how it feels to be 17 and
be misunderstood. I know how it feels to be 13, and people think you’re acting
out for attention.”
Hughes has learned how to control some of her triggers. She finally stopped
cutting herself for good when she was 19 and began taking kickboxing classes.
She also shed her drug addiction, and realized that a lot of what she was taught
at KidsPeace, especially regarding order and a structured routine, was precisely
what she needed to help control her mental illness.
“People look at you like you’re crazy when you’re not crazy,” she said. “I had an
illness. It was bad enough my family didn’t understand.”
She realizes she will likely need to remain on medication forever, but it’s a
small sacrifice to be in charge of her life. Now that she’s gotten the help she
desperately needed, she wants to ensure others battling mental illness realize
it doesn’t have to be the only defining factor of their lives. Above all, she says,
people need to take care of themselves and realize they don’t have to do
everything alone.
“When you have the help in front of you, don’t run from it. Take it, treasure it,”
she said. “Love yourself. You only live once. Life is crazy. Life is a challenge. Life
is great. You just have to go out there and get it.”
Dear Friends of KidsPeace,
In 2012, KidsPeace celebrated a major milestone –
130 years of providing a lifeline to children, families
and communities. We had the opportunity to reflect
on our beginnings as an orphanage for children
orphaned by the smallpox epidemic through the
many changes that occurred to make KidsPeace
what it is today – a thriving organization focused
on meeting critical mental and behavioral health
needs of children, teenagers and young adults. By
providing top-notch care to those in crisis, we are starting a positive ripple effect
as our clients are better able to assimilate into their families and communities.
We are seeing increased acuity in our clients across the board – from residential
to foster care to community programs. We realize KidsPeace is a microcosm of
the mental health arena, and we continue to push for greater awareness of and
resources for appropriate preventative services. The tragedy in Newtown, Conn.,
in December was yet another example of the need to remove the stigma that
too often hangs over mental illness. KidsPeace remains committed not only to
providing the best possible care to our clients but to educating others about the
mental health field through news interviews, articles and speaking engagements.
In the spirit of awareness, KidsPeace is proud to provide a free, online forum
where teenagers can find answers to tough questions. This year, we celebrate 15
years since the launch of TeenCentral.Net. This site has garnered international
attention for the information it provides on topics such as anti-bullying, alcohol
awareness, domestic and dating violence and weight issues. The multi-awardwinning
site is a font of information and advice, and the best part of all is that it
is completely anonymous and free for all users. As we look ahead to the next 15
years of helping teenagers, we are focused on reaching a wider audience, with
new sections planned on religion, teens in foster care and children of military
personnel. This new information will also be available through ParentCentral.Net,
our complementary platform that since 2011 has been providing parents with the
same outlet as their teens to share experiences and receive advice.
As we move through 2013, we look forward to another year of serving children,
families and communities. Please visit www.kidspeace.org to learn about more
upcoming events on our campuses and in the community.
Thank you for your ongoing support of the work we do every day to give
kids peace.
Transformation
The KidsPeace Transformation is a continual process of redefining the way
we provide support and treatment to the children, young adults and families
in our care, evolving into a better integrated multidisciplinary approach and
incorporating the highest levels of performance in safety, customer service,
initiative, staff competency, structure and communication.
Principles supporting our Transformation:
Safety
Safety is a primary need and fundamental right of each person.
Dignity
Each person is unique and has worth and value.
Relationships & Belonging
People grow in the context of supportive relationships.
Character
People learn by making decisions and taking action based upon values.
Empowerment
Each person has powerful potential.
These principles are in line with the KidsPeace Model of Care. The KidsPeace
Model of Care guides our organization in all that we do. It is the cornerstone
of our programs and services and is the basis of our philosophy. We share the
tenets of the Model of Care with the children and families we serve and ask
them to rate the care they receive based on the six components of the Model.
The graph below presents the results of that survey for 2012.
Demographics
KidsPeace has helped more than 200,000 clients since it opened in 1882. What
had its origins as a home for children orphaned by a smallpox epidemic has
evolved into an organization that serves children, families and communities
across the nation. Our Continuum of Care provides stability and continuity
as our clients transition to various levels of care within KidsPeace, assured of
consistency of philosophy and treatment at all facilities, programs and offices.
The KidsPeace Psychiatric Hospital serves children and young adults from 5
to 21 years of age. Our four residential facilities offer various levels of care to
clients ages 10-21 in Pennsylvania, Maine, Georgia and Minnesota. We offer
foster care from Maine to North Carolina and Pennsylvania to Nevada, matching
foster children to families to ensure caring environments that allow families to
thrive. KidsPeace also offers outpatient services at several locations.
With such a variety of services, we reach many ages, races and diagnoses. The
demographics below show that we touch the lives of many people in need.
In 2012, KidsPeace served 10,557 clients in our programs, 7,413 of whom
were new admissions.
referrals they make to residential treatment in their own states, and out-of-state
referrals are reserved for very special cases.
3,712 clients admitted in 2012
KidsPeace provides community-based outpatient services to children, families
and communities in Pennsylvania, Georgia and Maine, as well as from foster
care offices across the country. Services include acute partial hospitalization,
several autism programs, targeted case management, family and individual
counseling, diagnostic services, medication management, nutritional
assessments, pediatric evaluations and many more. The KidsPeace Family
Center at our Bethlehem, Pa., campus provides an array of services for children
and their families in one centralized location.
Hospital
KidsPeace Psychiatric Hospital
2,323 admissions during 2012
The KidsPeace Psychiatric Hospital is a freestanding, 96-bed facility that serves
community members ages 5-21 in age-appropriate units. The Hospital is
located on a beautiful wooded campus in Orefield, Pa., and provides care for
young people in serious crisis and also now offers direct admissions.
Magellan of Lehigh and Northampton Counties, Pa., selected KidsPeace
Hospital to participate in their Rewards for Quality (R4Q) initiative. The R4Q
initiative provides financial incentives to providers of different levels of care
based on their performance in several key areas. The KidsPeace Hospital was
the only inpatient provider selected by Lehigh/Northampton Magellan for
inclusion in this program.
In 2012, the Hospital received performance-based financial incentives in all four
quarters. We have consistently met the “Silver” standard on one indicator, which
measures how many of our discharged clients have kept their ambulatory
follow-up appointments within seven days. We have also consistently met
either the “Gold” or “Silver” standard level on another indicator, which measures
the percentage of our discharged clients who are referred to community-based
services. These are important indicators, which reflect both treatment success
at the KidsPeace Hospital as well as our commitment to work with our payors to
contain costs.
Our widest array of services is offered on our Orchard Hills Campus in Orefield,
Pa. Treatment is comprised of a combination of clinical, recreational and
educational services. Comprehensive treatment plans include evaluations and
assessments; behavior modification; individual, group and family therapy and
emergency crisis stabilization to an intensive residential program for clients
with histories of severe symptoms or repeated placements, who require more
one-on-one attention. There is a special sexual issues treatment program, and
our behavior disorder treatment program is designed to help clients take responsibility
for inappropriate behavior, increase social sensitivity and empathy
and learn self-discipline. KidsHope is an intensive treatment program for clients
Tri-Care
The KidsPeace Hospital and two of our residential houses are certified to accept
Tri-Care, the insurance for active military personnel and their families. Tri-Care
has different standards than other insurance companies, requiring providers to
offer additional individual and family therapy sessions, typically over the course
of a 150-day stay. To make it easier for families who live out of state or even
overseas, KidsPeace participates in geographic family therapy. This allows the
client’s family to work with a Tri-Care clinician near home and also participate in
phone therapy while the child is being treated at KidsPeace.
2012 Epiphany Project
The Epiphany Project, held on the Orchard Hills Campus in Pennsylvania, is a
program that facilitates positive change through experiential education and
adventure. The program combines adventure-based learning such as hikes
and a ropes course, with discussions, journaling and other artistic activities. The
intended outcomes include: increased self-esteem and control and improved
goal-setting, communication, problem-solving, conflict-resolution and
leadership skills.
Residential
Our Graham Lake Campus in Ellsworth, Maine, provides highly structured
psychiatric care, social skills training and educational and recreational services
for clients who would not be able to function appropriately in less restrictive
settings. Clients’ needs range from depression and substance abuse to sexual
abuse to family problems and abandonment issues. This campus also has a
specialized Autism Spectrum Disorder Program. This highly structured therapeutic
program teaches participants how to manage mental health symptoms
to improve their overall quality of life. Family involvement is encouraged as
clients undergo therapy, participate in skills groups and recreational activities
and receive special education services. The goal of treatment, which is based
on Applied Behavior Analysis, is to prepare each client for a productive life in a
family or community setting by focusing on self-care, behavior reduction, life
skills and communication.
Georgia Residential Treatment
76 admissions in 2012
Our rural campus in Bowdon, Ga., provides the perfect setting for children and
teenagers who need a secure place to heal so they can be reunited with their
families. Services include assessments; individual, group and family therapy;
substance abuse treatment and community support services. There is a
specialized sexual disorders unit for males in need of more intensive services
than are available in the community. All clients attend our on-campus school,
but also learn through skill-building groups, career and technical training,
independent living skills training and a variety of recreational activities on
campus and in the community, such as ropes and equine therapy. KidsPeace
works with clients and their families to establish aftercare plans to ensure an
107 admissions in 2012
Mesabi Academy in Buhl, Minn., is KidsPeace’s sole juvenile justice facility, offering
services to delinquent and non-delinquent males whose poor impulse
control, lack of coping mechanisms or aggression make them a risk to the community
or themselves. Clients typically have a history of elopement from home
or other treatment programs and are struggling with issues such as chronic
truancy, fire-setting, weapons offenses, assaults or robberies. Many of these
boys and young men have drug and alcohol addictions, anti-social personality
traits, poor social or problem-solving skills or criminal histories. Specialized
groups include Thinking for a Change, Trauma Recovery and Empowerment
and Aggression Replacement Training.
In 2012, Mesabi opened a chemical dependency unit called “Compass.” The
treatment program is built around the 12-step values, and participants must
reach at least the third step to successfully complete the program. Mesabi also
now has a short-term, high-impact secure program, designed for clients who
have committed offenses or probation violations, but do not need long-term
treatment. The program is nine to 15 days long and occurs within the physically
secure unit.
Over the summer, Mesabi Academy underwent its second Correctional Program
Checklist (CPC) assessment and received a “highly effective” rating. The purpose
of the CPC is to evaluate how closely correctional programs meet the principles
of effective intervention. It has been validated in studies involving 40,000 juvenile
offenders and more than 400 correctional programs.
KidsPeace provides foster care services to children across the country, from
Maine to North Carolina and New York to Nevada. We are successful because
we recruit and train the most skilled and dedicated families to take our children
into their homes and become active participants in the children’s healing. We
carefully match children to families then keep in constant contact to ensure the
placements are working and the children are doing well.
We provide many of our older foster teens with life skills training to help
them prepare for independent living. We are always available to help children
and parents deal with any issues that arise, and we are champions of finding
permanency for the children in our program.
KidsPeace is committed to applying the Resiliency Theory to our Foster Care
Model of Care. We screen our staff and foster parents to ensure they effectively
support the model then develop training and evaluation systems that provide
strong ongoing support.
Together Facing the Challenge
KidsPeace has partnered with Duke University and Penn State University to
research and develop the Together Facing the Challenge training and treatment
curriculum. This evidence-based approach* to providing treatment to youth in
foster care provides practical direction about how to:
}Build therapeutic relationships, perform and teach cooperation skills,
implement effective parenting techniques, prepare youth for their future by
teaching independence skills and provide ongoing assessment of effective
foster parent use of the interventions trained, as well as provide ongoing
training and coaching for needed improvement.
KidsPeace has always addressed the above and has recognized that its foster
families are partners who are integral members of the treatment team. So, “what
is different?”:
}Cohesiveness – Foster parents, recruiters/trainers, casework staff and
supervisors are all working from the same proven playbook as the language,
orientation and framework are the same across the board.
}Consistency – All homes use a set of therapeutic interventions that support
our Model of Care and have demonstrated proven results.
}Evidence-Based Practice – Together Facing the Challenge has been given
a Level 2 rating for Research Evidence and a Level 1 rating for Child Welfare
Relevance from the California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare.
Education
822 students admitted in 2012
An integral component of the care we provide to our clients involves education.
All youth in residential treatment attend on-campus classes, and every effort
is made to keep each client current with his or her homework. KidsPeace
coordinates with home schools to ensure that we are meeting Individualized
Education Plan (IEP) needs as closely as possible. Frequent communication
between home schools and KidsPeace prevents students from falling behind
and, in many cases, the smaller classes and individualized attention they receive
allows them to catch up and even surpass the progress they had been making
in their home schools.
Using the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement (KTEA) for individualized
math testing, we test each new client at admission and six months later.
Many of these students are three to four years behind academically. While
at KidsPeace, these students experience an overall 63 percent gain in the
academic area of mathematics, gaining 1.2 years of learning for every year in
our school system. We also test our students’ reading skill with the Woodcock-
Johnson III Diagnostic Reading Battery at admission and discharge, and 75.2
percent of students tested showed improvement from 2012 to 2013. Academic
Amanda Seyfried is the
national spokesperson
for TeenCentral.Net. The
site also has support from
several Miss Pennsylvania
winners.
In the 90s the Internet was just beginning to
evolve and there were many hopes and dreams
developing around this new and exciting venue.
KidsPeace had its own ideas and visions on how
we would develop an intervention/prevention
message. Always looking forward, it was decided
to put our hopes in this new arena and create a
website that would enable teens to get free, safe
and anonymous professional help.
Foundations like UPS, Ronald McDonald
House, Heinz and many others offered the
funding necessary to get this underway. (Our
intervention/prevention effort was born as
TeenCentral.Net.) On Sept. 8, 1998, KidsPeace
unveiled this new and innovative website before
Congress in Washington D.C., with celebrities
such as Kirstin Dunst, Tia and Tamara Mowry and
‘N Sync at our side. The National spokesperson
for TeenCentral.Net is actress Amanda Seyfried.
Now celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2013,
the site has grown to more than 509,500
members, more than 210,000 stories and more
than 220,000 responses. We welcome teens and
counselors from all over the world. Over the
past 15 years we have worked with interns from
UCLA, University of Budapest, Lehigh University,
Muhlenberg College, Penn State, Liberty Bible
College and many others. We have had a
presence in the curriculum of Lehigh University,
Cedar Crest Collage and Lehigh Carbon
Community College.
14
In 1998 TeenCentral.Net had two administrators and eight
counselors. Today, TeenCentral.Net has one director, three
administrators, more than 60 counselors and 18 interns.
There are more than 509,500 registered
members on TeenCentral.Net.
In 1998 TeenCentral.Net received
approximately eight to 10 stories
per month. Today TeenCentral.Net
receives more than 300 per month.
During our first 15 years, we inspired a book, “I’ve Got This Friend Who….” and developed
working partnerships with prominent organizations such as Simon Schuster Books’ teen division.
TeenCentral.Net won a Bronze Award for its “Anti-Bullying Section” and a Silver Award for its work on
Weight Awareness from the Web Health Awards. In January 2011, ParentCentral.Net was introduced
to avail parents of the same kind of help teens receive from TeenCentral.Net. It won a Meritorious
Award from the Web Health Awards during its first year.
Resources and Expenditures
Maintaining exceptional quality of care for the children KidsPeace serves
requires a significant amount of money. As a nonprofit organization, the
majority of our income originates from fees paid by state and federal agencies
and private insurers. We are fortunate to receive assistance in the form of
generous donations from foundations, corporate sponsors, individuals and
grants. Our expenditures are primarily for the provision of care and treatment
to our clients, with a small percentage funding administration, marketing,
contributions to the community and fundraising events.
KidsPeace expenditures are primarily focused on salaries and related benefits
for our highly trained associates who provide direct and indirect services to our
children. In 2012, 80 percent of our expenses were for labor, while 14 percent
covered other expenses and 6 percent met depreciation and interests costs.
KidsPeace lost a tireless champion with the passing of Inez Donley in January. She served on our
Board of Directors from 1976 to 1990 and remained an honorary director until her death. Donley and
her husband, Edward, were major supporters of KidsPeace, donating more than $1.47 million to our
organization to help children and teenagers with behavioral and mental health challenges. In 2009,
KidsPeace created the Donley Society to honor our strongest annual financial supporters.
Associates
Longevity is the hallmark of the dedicated KidsPeace
team of associates. In fact, almost 27 percent of our associates
have been working at KidsPeace for 10 years
or more. This says a great deal about the environment
KidsPeace provides for its associates and the culture
that prevails in our organization. Our associates find
their work at KidsPeace rewarding and meaningful,
and the continuing education and training they
receive provide enrichment in children’s mental and
behavioral health. Management and supervision, Life
Space Crisis Intervention, the Sanctuary Model, CPR
and First Aid are some ancillary subjects that also help
them grow personally and professionally.
Crisis Intervention
KidsPeace has always been proactive in responding to crises and tragedies
that occur in the community or the world. In Pennsylvania, we have a crisis
response team that mobilizes when an event is causing fear, stress, grief or
trauma in a group of students. Whether a student suicide, a shooting or other
act of violence, a fatal accident, the death of a beloved teacher or other event,
the KidsPeace Critical Incident Response Team sets up in the school, church or
other venue and offers free counseling to students and teachers to help them
get through the crisis. We stay at the site as long as the school or group needs
us and make ourselves available for future contact if a youth or adult feels the
need to talk about the event. On a national scale, KidsPeace keeps a finger on
the pulse of the events of the nation and world and offers expert advice to the
public through news interviews, press releases and articles to put citizens at
ease. KidsPeace also assists with preventive measures such as walking on behalf
of suicide prevention, offering free tips on parenting, speaking at public events
and providing relevant information on prevention and intervention through
Public Awareness
Media outlets throughout the United States and Canada interviewed KidsPeace
experts during 2012. Help and advice were offered to thousands of parents
and young people on such topics as teen bullying, self-esteem, teen pregnancy
and mental health awareness. Our experts provided an abundance of helpful
information in the aftermath of the Newton, Conn., shootings. We ran public
service announcements in Pennsylvania on alcohol awareness. In Maryland,
Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter and his wife, Angela, are vocal
KidsPeace champions.
Kidspeace.org contains an incredible amount of information, not only about
KidsPeace and all we offer from all of our sites, but also educational articles,
brochures and mental health information that’s free to all users. We archive
articles from Healing Magazine ® and offer helpful resources for parents, teachers,
counselors, foster parents, clinicians and other adults who need information
and guidance.
TeenCentral.Net ®
out to teens around the world and provides sound information and guidance.
ParentCentral.Net TM
In early 2011, KidsPeace launched a new free website. ParentCentral.Net is
a special site where parents can communicate with counselors and other
parenting professionals and receive answers to questions within 24 hours.
18
Prevention and Intervention
Similar to TeenCentral.Net, the award-winning KidsPeace website that has
been providing advice and information to teens since 1998, parents can write
about issues that are bothering them and receive advice from a Master’s or
Ph.D-level counselor. The questions and answers are posted on the website so
the information can help others. This site is dedicated to helping parents who
are dealing with some of life’s more difficult challenges. It contains parenting
information and helpline phone numbers, and it educates, encourages and assists
parents in dealing with parenting issues. ParentCentral.Net has various topic areas
and podcasts on subjects like: The Family Meal, Suicide Prevention and How to
Speak with Your Son/Daughter about Relationships.
The Sanctuary Model®
KidsPeace Pennsylvania residential centers, education and support departments
continue the commitment to incorporate the Sanctuary Model, a whole systems
approach to culture change for an organization using trauma-informed care
theories. The aim is to provide healthy and healing environments for our clients
and associates to provide high-quality services.
During the last year, our implementation process has evolved from using one
large core team and steering committee to multiple sub-core teams working
toward growth and change. Currently, one “main” core team consists of associates
on a variety of levels from mental health technicians to executive leadership, who
work closely to help guide the overall implementation of the model. Six sub-core
teams are a representation of the four Pennsylvania residential centers, education
and support departments. The sub-core teams, consisting of more than 80
associates, enable staff from all programs and departments to be involved in the
decisions and future of the organization. We continue to train and implement the
tools of Sanctuary with our associates and clients. This year alone, we have held
120 Sanctuary training modules for associates, incorporated community meetings
and safety plans into our programs, and developed a “Non-Violence” committee
to create solutions using the Sanctuary Model concepts.
Seven commitments outline the way associates agree to operate:
They are commitment to non-violence, commitment to emotional intelligence,
commitment to social learning, commitment to open communication, commitment
to social responsibility, commitment to democracy and commitment to
growth and change. These seven commitments help guide our decisions, actions
and interactions on a daily basis and drive our progress to create a positive, productive
and healing community for our organization.
Since 1948, the KidsPeace Auxiliary has been raising funds to support the work of providing hope, help and healing to children, families
and communities. Originally founded as the Wiley House Ladies Auxiliary, the KidsPeace Auxiliary has assisted thousands of children.
From providing birthday and holiday presents to every child in our care, to supporting larger projects such as the new facilities on
our Broadway Campus, the KidsPeace Auxiliary has been tireless in its commitment to bettering the lives of children who come to
KidsPeace. A largely independent group of more than 100 volunteers, the Auxiliary sponsors many events each year that directly
benefit KidsPeace, allowing us to serve more children and families every day.
KidsPeace children have a special place in the hearts of the members of the Auxiliary. Likewise, the Auxiliary is the heart of the
KidsPeace family, providing funds, goodwill and more than 60 years of caring for kids.
