1963 Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta Lusso to Competizione spec
Coachwork by Pininfarina
Chassis no. 5587GT Engine no. 5587GT Price ?250,000
The gorgeous Ferrari 250GT B e r l i n e t t a Lusso is generally regarded as having been the most exquisitely
proportioned and most beautiful of all the Pininfarina styling creations upon the legendary front-engined Fe r r a r i
2 5 0 GT chassis. These were classical high-performance G r a n t u r i s m o cars with a difference, for they combined
power and speed with the highest contemporary levels of elegance and comfortable accommodation for two,
plus their luggage. If ever there was a Ferrari for lovers this was it, and the motoring-minded public loved the
Lusso and everything it represented.
Chassis ‘5587GT’ left the Maranello works in May 1964,
finished in silver with black leather upholstery and
destined for the US showrooms of renowned American
importer Luigi Chinetti. It remained Stateside for the next
16 years until acquired from a San Francisco dealer,
together with a 275GT S, by cosmopolitan Italian racing
driver and dealer Giorgio Schon, heir to the Mila Schon
fashion house. Dr Schon did not, however, keep the car
for long, selling it to a Milanese financier soon after
importation to Italy in 1980.
The new owner of ‘5587GT’ embarked upon a noe
x p e n s e-spared programme of race preparation, with
coachwork entrusted to former Scaglietti foreman Egidio
Brandoli of Montale, near Modena. The entire outer skin
was recrafted in thin gauge aluminium, as on Fe r r a r i ’ s
contemporary racing GTs, with bumpers and trim
removed in order to save further weight, plus a roll bar
and quick release outside filler cap and safely fuel tank.
Mechanical upgrading was the responsibility of Livio
Guarnieri of Milan, whose work included fitting six GTO
type Weber carburetors to the original Ti p o 168 engine
(the internal number of which has been recently verified),
together with racing cams, straight-through side exhaust,
a limited slip differential and an array of other FIA
approved tweaks.

Soon afterwards ‘5587GT’ took to the track, looking to repeat the success of privately prepared Lussos some two
decades earlier. At Monza in 1982 it was first in class, beginning a series of excellent placings leading up to its
final Targa Florio outing in 1990, by which time the car had become so valuable as to give its owner second
thoughts about racing it. In 23 events, chassis ‘5587GT’ won its class no fewer than 11 times, coming within the
first four places overall nine times. Competition came from a wide variety of cars including heavily modified E-
Type Jaguars, TZ Alfas and of course a fleet of well prepared Competition 250SWB Fe r r a r i s .
Since 1990 this red-liveried Ferrari 250GT Lusso has been carefully stored and rarely driven. Now in the
ownership of the previous owner’s son, it is offered for sale with Italian registration and two large albums of racing
history and photographs. It would make the perfect thoroughbred mount for historic racing or could equally be
returned to road configuration for slightly more sedate high speed Grand To u r i n g, and represents excellent value
in an appreciating market.
