2. MINUTES OF THE LAST A.G.M. HELD 3rd DECEMBER 2011
The minutes of the previous meeting were agreed and signed.
3. MATTERS ARISING FROM THE LAST MEETING
None.
4. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Highlight of the year was the Brewery Tap – which was a huge success and arrangements are all in
place for this year. Cambridge Dinner went back to its usual format, and was hosted at Christ’s
College by undergraduate OP Andrew Aistrup. Select but very pleasant company. 2013 Dinner will be
hosted by OP Laura Russell at Newnham College.
Informal after-works drinks in London was attended by a small group, but it was an enjoyable evening.
Need to consider ways of possibly increasing interest for 2013.
In August, some 70 OPs chatted under the OPA Banner over the course of Thursday evening. TE
would like to thank PI for his help.
The reunion event planned for September was cancelled due to poor ticket sales. TE thanked HB and
SG for all their efforts. A small group did still meet up at The Bull Hotel, which TE attended and he met
with FS, along with Caroline Lamb who are both interested in joining The OPA Committee.
Carol Castle and Sheridan Gaunt represented the OPA at the PSA Christmas Fayre yesterday.
Sue Lovell left the role of OPA Administrator due to additional school commitments. Carol Castle took
over the role in September.
Kevin Julian tendered his resignation from the Committee. TE to thank KJ in writing, especially for his
generous sponsorship, success with the Invicti Reunion and his legal assistance with the Consititution.
The Petriburgian was good this year, in terms of the content and quality; sadly, School was
disappointed that it did not break even this year. Also, it arrived in school later than usual. SG and CC
are assisting the School in its production and plans for 2013 are already underway.
There was a poor response from the London Branch to the Annual London Dinner, which was
cancelled for the 4 th year running and a decision has been made not to arrange and future dinners in
London, but to encourage attendance at the Informal after-work drinks in May. The London Branch
may be disbanded. TE to pass on thanks them all for their support over the years.
5. TREASURER’S REPORT
RD reported that her second year as Treasurer was not a busy one. Surplus of £1006.24 compared to
268.10 last year, thanks to donations including sponsoring of runners in the Great Eastern Run. No
other costs to reports. RD thanked CGJW for his assistance with banking.
£10,000 to be moved to a deposit account. TE and RD have been investigating best accounts. Original
idea of using the same bank as the School’s account did not prove to offer the best return following a
drop in interest rates. Most favourable seems to be Santander 12-month deposit account, offering
2.75% interest. RD to seek Committee members details as required by Building Society to proceed
and report back at next meeting.
See Appendix A for audited accounts.
Membership Secretary's Report 2012
Since this report is made in December, some items reported in the Magazine don’t get
mentioned.
This year I was invited to attend the Sixth Form Lecture given by Rt Hon David Lammy PC
MP, one-time Head Chorister and Head Boy. Looking at the Sixth Formers and members of
staff who had been present when he was a pupil, he knew he was amongst friends.
Welcomed and introduced, he took his audience down memory lane, reminding us of the past
50 years and how changing administrations have shaped our lives, bringing us to the present
and just where as a nation we are today - he ups and downs, how situations were dealt with
for good or ill, and the problems facing us today. What would these young minds and the odd
'oldie' have done in a free and fair society? With a charming smile he said he would think
about it with us. What a challenge for the Sixth Form! How will we cope with the advance of
electronic communication and a method of creating work for all?
With much pleasure, I noted that a grand Old Petriburgian, Jim Deboo (90) had been
nominated by City church leaders for the rare honour of receiving Maundy Money from the
Queen at a service at York Minister on 12 April 2012. Dr Jim Deboo OBE was one of 86 men
and women to receive the red and white leather purse containing the specially minted coins
at the Royal Maundy Service, which was also attended by the Duke of Edinburgh and
Princess Beatrice of York. He was able to tell Her Majesty it was a great honour to represent
Peterborough. This honour was in recognition of his life-long contribution to the City. To list
but a few, he led the Peterborough Civic Society, Peterborough Museums’ Society and
Westwood Musical Society. He founded the nationally-recognised School of Apprentices. In
1984 at Buckingham Palace the Queen appointed him OBE and Loughborough University
awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Technology. Until 2011 he had been a Governor at The
King’s School.
Lastly mention of a much younger Old Petriburgian, Old Chorister Alex Spires. In an effort to
raise funds for a Cathedral Choir tour, he entered the Great Eastern Run. With the backing of
Barclays Bank, matching him pound for pound, up to £750, he raised £1713 - not bad! His
average speed was 7.56 mph!
This year I have met members of the Sixth Form, last year’s and this year’s Head Boy and
Head Girl at the 2 Schola Regia Ladies’ Festivals and have been privileged to be asked to
present the prizes at the School’s Sailing Regatta.
Being Membership Secretary can be fun!
Social Secretary’s Report 2012
As you all know, due to family illness I was unable to be as active in my role as Social
Secretary as I had hoped . I would like to officially thank Mr Chairman for allowing me to slot
back into my role as and when I was ready too.
I am pleased to report that we have made huge inroads with The Brewery Tap for the Annual
Reunion to be held on 27th December. I have met with Jessica Looke, General Manager and
secured a £100 cash donation, along with £140 worth of vouchers to be spent on either food
or drink. I have also secured 3 crates of beer and 3 T-shirts from Adrian Posnett, MD of
Oakham Ales. Mr Chairman is in receipt of the cash and vouchers. The beer and T-shirts are
to be delivered to The Brewery Tap in the next week. The lost banner has returned too, in fact
it never left the Brewery Tap! It has been found in their loft, so that will stay there until the
Reunion, and then return to School. I propose that the voucher and beer etc are used at the
event and we talk through the ideas that HB and I have to ensure we capture as many people
as we can coming through the doors for the raffle, which if managed correctly should run
more smoothly than previous years.
I think that where we may have faltered in the past is that maybe we have not communicated
the actual purpose of the OPA? It would seem that once third parties are aware of how the
OPA can be called upon and benefit students, whose families may experience financial
hardship, people and companies are far more willing to support our Association.
There are no scheduled events currently for Peterborough in 2013 other than the Beer
Festival and Annual Informal Reunion at the Brewery Tap.
