Welcome to Riverpoint
In early 1941, approximately 100 acres of “highland” in Norfolk was
deeded to the Riverpoint Corporation for development as a residential
subdivision. It is bound on the east by Granby Street and on the west
and south by the Lafayette River.
The waterfront lots are located on each of six peninsulas. The lots surround
cul-de-sacs which serve to increase circulation of water breezes
between the interior of the neighborhood and the Lafayette River. A large
center area was proposed as a park and playground, which became the
Riverpoint Park.
By the end of WWII, about six houses had been built; and in the late
40’s and early 50’s, homes began to fill the 230 lots. Through the years,
the civic minded residents of Riverpoint have been physicians, business
owners, lawyers, educators, and members of the military.
In support of CHKD, a former resident initiated and chaired for three
years the Duck Tape Regatta fundraiser; and recently, a neighbor spearheaded
Shop From the Heart, a fundraiser at MacArthur Mall. Our
neighbors participate in many city activities and its cultural events. In
order to show our appreciation and to raise money for the needs and care
given to the children in Hampton Roads at CHKD, we welcome you to
the Tour de Cuisine in Riverpoint.

Welcome to the 8th Annual Tour de Cuisine, a unique home and culinary
experience!
It has been very exciting to work on this year’s event. I have had the
opportunity to meet many new people who share my heartfelt enthusiasm and
support of the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters.
This year we have introduced several new aspects to the Tour de Cuisine that
I hope will enhance your total experience. We have added the talent of five
well-recognized local artists who will display their works of art in the homes.
We have also added a beer garden that will provide a relaxing place to linger,
socialize, and listen to live music. As always, we are extremely fortunate to have
the sponsors who contribute to our event; the homeowners who graciously
open their homes; the restaurants who showcase their culinary gifts; and the
florists and artists who add beauty and artistic talent to the day. With all of
this support, I know the Tour de Cuisine will once again be the talk of the
town, and will benefit the region’s premiere and only children’s hospital.
My sincere thanks to all who have worked so hard to make this event possible.
Thank you for your support and for spending your afternoon with us.
Bon Appetit! ‘
The King’s Daughters
are the founders of Children’s Hospital
of The King’s Daughters. We have
more than 120 years of fascinating
history of caring for children beginning with hiring a
bicycle nurse, to opening a clinic, to building a modern
stand-alone pediatric hospital. We have been making
a difference in the lives of children in Hampton Roads
since 1896.
The King’s Daughters’ membership
is organized into Circles (Adult and
Junior) that are located throughout
Hampton Roads. Each Circle elects its
own leaders, organizes its own events,
contributes hand-sewn items and
donates time and money to CHKD.
Members also chair and serve on The King’s Daughters’ major fundraising
project committees throughout the year. A Board of Directors, which governs
the organization, is elected annually by the membership and is supported by a
dedicated staff.
CHKD Health System
(CHS) is dedicated exclusively
to meeting the unique medical
and surgical needs of children,
both inpatient and outpatient,
throughout Virginia and
northeastern North Carolina.
Facilities include the Children’s
Hospital of The King’s Daughters
as well as a comprehensive
network of pediatric providers
who work in locations
throughout our community.
417 Ridgeley Road
Babbi & Brad Bangel
This contemporary home, built in
the early 1950s, has been renovated
to take advantage of magnificent
riverfront vistas. With a
repositioning of the entrance and
the moving of walls, the rooms
now incorporate the striking outdoor
landscape with a wonderful
sense of space. The entrance hall
and dining room feature floors
inlaid with granite. A distinctive brushed stainless-steel chandelier adorns the large
burled-ash dining table, nest to an attractive custom buffet and serving area. The
kitchen is fully open to a large great room that overlooks a delightful water garden
and live oak trees, some reputed to be 250 years old. Granite countertops blend
with handsome cherry kitchen cabinets, and small windows above the cook-top
repeat the shape of those in the entry, original to the house. An unusual barkedged,
custom-shaped glass-top breakfast table was made to adapt to the curvature
of an exterior wall. Fabrics in the great room reflect the colors of an exotic area
rug. The powder room features copper and burgundy rag-painted walls, accented
with a bowl sink set on a limestone countertop and a delightful beaded shade at
the window. Of note are contemporary painting by Sokol Hohne and Carment
Lagos.
6075 River Crescent
Emily Munn & Jeff Silverman
The land for our home was purchased in late 1940 by Daniel Hofheimer, the son
of the owners of the original Hofheimer Shoe company. The lots were subdivided
in 1940 by the Riverpoint Corporation with significant regulations as to construction
of fences and outbuildings. The “Hofheimer house” then became lovingly known
as the “Konikoff house” beginning in 1986 when David Konikoff purchased the
residence and did significant renovations and additions to accommodate his family.
The home is 8300 square feet and has 6 bedrooms, 6 full bathrooms, and 2 half
baths. The garage doors on the right side of the house originally led to a standard
two-car garage but now are decorative, as the garage area was remodeled into a
two-story workout facility with sauna, steam room, and storage areas.
6071 River Crescent was the first
house in Riverpoint built on the water
by Jeff and Eleanor Hofheimer
in 1941. Their daughter Eleanor
Lawrence and her husband Billy
lived here until 1998, raising two
daughters. Now Susie and Joe Folk
have made it their home.
6071 River Crescent
Susan & Joseph Folk
The house was remodeled in 1998 by Covington Contracting. Built Right Inc.
converted the screened-in porch to a sunroom in 2001 and added a first-floor
bedroom and new kitchen in 2011. Nor’easters and other storms have tested the
home. In the 1950’s a boat on sawhorses on the beach was tossed through the
dining room window, and Hurricane Irene demolished the pier in 2011.
If there is one continuous theme of 6071 River Crescent in her 71 years of service,
it is hospitality. There is a verse in the book of Hebrews, “Let brotherly love
continue. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing, some have unwittingly
entertained angels.” Some of the many gatherings have undoubtedly included
angels. The home has hosted weddings, receptions, showers, anniversaries,
graduations, church gatherings, Navy chaplains, children of all ages and assorted
odd-fellow groups.
Susie and Joe Folk consider it a great privilege to host a function for The King’s
Daughters to benefit CHKD, knowing that Children’s Hospital of The King’s
Daughters has angels in abundance among its patients, employees and volunteers.
6016 S. River Road
Vince and Susan Pilato
The 1955 mid century home
was designed by the Norfolk
architect Konikoff. There are
two others in our neighborhood
that he designed that
have similar characteristics.
The extension on the back of
the house that houses the master
bedroom and two lower
bedrooms was added in 1963.
This is one of the few trilevel
homes in Norfolk with a
sunken outdoor patio and a retaining brick wall. After the addition, Dr. and Mrs. Kaplan
bought the home from the Bain’s in 1967 and lived there until we bought it in 2007. We
renovated the home with a remodel of the kitchen, master bedroom/bathroom, the lower
bar area and the addition of wood floors in the main level and addition of lighting. All
the bathrooms had some extent of remodeling done as well. All the exterior doors were
custom designed and are made of African Mahogany with glass panels to add natural
lighting to the interior.
FUN FACTS: The terrazzo flooring in the main level and what we call the “Dean
Martin” room (which is the lower bar area) is original and has mother of pearl accents.
Very unusual for that time period. The open design with the roof line also called for a
built up roof with marble chip, which is not a typical roof for residences. The peninsula
that is at the extent of the back yard was created by dredge material from the river, when
a neighbor decided to keep his seaplane at his home next door many decades ago and
dredge a slip for his plane. The glass house in the backyard once housed Dr. Kaplan’s
beautiful orchids, which now can be seen at the conservatory at ODU. Dr. and Mrs.
Kaplan worked hard to fund raise for this incredible facility at ODU and not only donated
their terrific orchid collection by made a substantial personal donation as well. The special
finishes on the walls in the brick foyer, main level and upper level were all done by local
artist, Reese Lusk of Lusk Studios. Until 2007, the kitchen had been closed off to the rest
of the house by walls and doors. Now it is open to view the water and for entertaining
purposes.
6044 Newport Crescent
Cookie & Joel Mason
The Mason’s has always been
a comfortable and welcoming
family home. Built in 1954, it was
originally a two story traditional
colonial home with three
bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Today, the house has five
bedrooms and five bathrooms after
several renovations. The Masons
purchased the home in 1972, and
added 1,500 square feet to the back of the house in 1973, as well as a deck over
the great room (the size of a platform tennis court) which is now the master suite.
A second renovation of 2,400 square feet resulted from a simple design change
of the front door. In 1985 a pool was put in, 65ft long with two lanes, the place
where many a family gathering takes place. Their granddaughter’s name, Sarah, is
embedded in the concrete in the back yard; she visits with them every summer.
In order to better enjoy their waterfront, a dock was built in 2000.
The house has been struck by lightning twice – the first time a house fire caused
them to move out for four months. The second time was after their daughter’s
wedding in the back yard.
The Masons home has been host to many; from friends convalescing to their
children’s friends who considered it their second home.
