“New Circle by the Bay”
The majority of the circle members
are from the Church Point and
Chick’s Beach neighborhoods in
Virginia Beach, and their leader,
Debbie Grell, knows first-hand how
important CHKD is to our community.
Debbie’s daughter, Caroline, born
2 ½ months prematurely, weighed
just 2 pounds, 1 ounce, had to be
rushed to CHKD. Thanks to the
doctors and nurses, Caroline is now a
healthy teenager.
Circle by the Bay has been busy
planning numerous community
activities with its first fundraiser slated
to coincide with the annual Church
Point community yard sale taking
place May 9, 2009, from 8:00a.m.
until 1:00 p.m. Two houses
have been designated as “King’s
Daughters’ Houses” with 100% of the
profits from the sales being donated
to CHKD.

KD Kudos - Nancy Nusbaum
skirt! magazine profiles women thematically
each month. For the Shero (she+ hero= Shero)
issue that will run this June, readers were
asked to write, in 50 words or less, about
someone who has accomplished something that
places them in high esteem in the eyes of the
nominator. Nancy Nusbaum, former president
of
The King’s Daughters, was nominated by a fellow
Circle member who happens to work with Nancy
on the Tour de Cuisine Committee, which Nancy
has chaired for the last two years. Nancy was
nominated for many reasons including her volunteer and fundraising
service to The Kings Daughters and Physicians for Peace. During
Nancy’s tenure as president of The King’s Daughters we were successful
in donating over $850,000 in the 2007-08 fiscal year. This was the
highest cash gift ever given in a single year by the KDs Nancy was a
shero winner amongst three other nominees who were highlighted for a
variety of reasons including, a severe stroke survivor; a faithful neighbor
who continually bakes for others in need; and an immigrant mother who
sacrificed everything to achieve the American Dream for her children.
skirt! magazine will celebrate Nancy and the other 3 “sheros”, at the first
Shero skirt! Party on June 11th at The Rotunda in Norfolk from 5:30-7:30
pm. The ad stating specifics for the party will run in the June issue of skirt!
We Need You!
We have many volunteer positions open for our Major projects. Most
don’t require attending meetings each month, but simply working the
day of the event. We would love to have volunteers from each circle!!
Look for a sign up sheet at your next circle meeting. ** For all events,
volunteers do not have to buy a ticket if they are just working a shift. If
they plan in attending the event, they will be required to buy a ticket.
