Best Buddies
Making connections with peers is important for
anybody at any age, and students in Suzanne
Dwyer’s Special Education class at Kings Junior
High are no exception.
To get her students interacting with their peers Mrs.
Dwyer started a Best Buddies group, a global volunteer
movement designed to create one-to-one
friendships for people with intellectual and developmental
disabilities (www.bestbuddies.org/bestbuddies).
Josh Reading, a 2012 Kings graduate, said being a volunteer in the Best Buddies program when he was at
KJH helped shape his future. Josh is now a Freshman at Miami University Middletown. He is studying to become
a Special Education teacher. To read the rest of this story please click here.
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Visits Kings Mills Elementary
The sweet sounds of a string quintet filled the science lab at Kings
Mills Elementary on Monday, Feb. 4, when members of the Cincinnati
Symphony Orchestra performed music by Antonin Dvorak.
The Quintet was at KME in conjunction with the Young People’s Concert—a
field trip to Music Hall February 19.
The musicians talked to students about their instruments—age, construction,
sound, history—and played two pieces. Some of the instruments
were more than 150 years old!
Students were able to ask many questions. They also talked about
how the music made them feel. One student commented that the
music made her feel like she was in a dream, while another said she
felt like she was being chased.
The musicians also talked about the importance of being a good audience.
When listening to acoustic performances it’s important to be as still and as silent as possible, so you can hear all of the music.
The students were excellent audience members!
Ziggy Illustrator
Visit J.F.
Burns Elementary
Ziggy is quiet
and unassuming.
“I wanted
him to be cuddly
like your
favorite teddy
bear,” Illustrator Tom Wilson told students in Stephanie
Marchal’s class at J.F. Burns Elementary.
Mr. Wilson is Ziggy’s illustrator. Syndicated in 1971, Mr. Wilson
and Ziggy have been making people laugh for more than 40
years.
The comic started with Mr. Wilson’s dad, also named Tom. Mr.
Wilson , who lives in Loveland, took over about 20 years ago.
On Tuesday, Feb. 5, he visited JFB where his niece and nephew
go to school. After drawing a few pictures Mr. Wilson talked to
the students about illustrating. His dad always told him to use
the second idea you come up with.
Students were then given an illustration of Ziggy about to walk
into a hole. They had to figure out a way to help Ziggy. Max
Aselage drew a tornado to fill in the hole. Ella Hampton drew
herself into the picture. She is grabbing Ziggy to keep him from
falling in the hole.
Mr. Wilson encouraged students to keep using their imagination
and drawing.
Rain Barrel
For the past several weeks, Kings High School Art
Club members Ali Hill and Kelly Madison, and KHS
Art Teacher Carrie Cooke have been hard at work
designing and painting a rain barrel for the public
art project “Saving Rain For a Sunny Day.” This art
project was created by the Regional Storm Water
Collaborative in an effort to inspire water conservation.
Ali, Kelly, and Carrie worked together to create the design for their rain barrel. They have
spent the last three weeks sanding, priming, sketching, and painting the barrel. The painted
rain barrels will be unveiled at a Fundraiser Gala and Expo during Party for the Planet at
the Cincinnati Zoo’s Go Green Garden. The barrels will be on display at the Cincinnati Zoo
at the end of March through April 18.
KJH Students Take the Plunge
On a balmy 10 degree day, Connor Gates and Stuart Budd jumped into an icy pool.
They were taking part in the Polar Plunge. This annual event raises money for the
Northern Kentucky Special Olympics.
Connor, a seventh grader at Kings Junior High, first started taking the plunge three
years ago. That first year he participated at his dad’s suggestion, but Connor has
kept up the tradition.
“I like to do it because it’s for a good cause and it’s fun,” he said.
This year’s Polar Plunge was on February 2. It was 10 degrees and snowing that
morning. It was so cold officials had to break the ice on the pool before participants could jump in the water. Connor said when
you jump in “it’s like you are in shock, you can’t talk or anything.” It takes about 15 seconds to get back out of the water. Connor
raised nearly $100 for the Special Olympics and plans to participate again next year.
